'I'm a car mechanic and this £500 20-year-old motor is top for reliability'

Daily Mirror24-06-2025
An experienced mechanic has recommended a 20-year-old used car as one of the most reliable vehicles one can buy after purchasing one for £500 - and it's all down to how simple it is
An expert mechanic has endorsed a 20-year-old used car as one of the most reliable motors on the market to purchase.
Paul Lucas, a respected mechanic, praised the Mk1 Ford Focus as a solid second-hand buy due to its simplicity and dependability.

An owner of a Mk1 himself, Paul revealed he had purchased one of these vehicles for £500 15 years ago and it hadn't missed a beat thanks to his meticulous maintenance.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "For me a 20-year-old 1.6 litre Mk1 Ford Focus is top for reliability.
"It was designed before all the unnecessary bells and whistles came in and even lets you start the car with a real key rather than press a button. I bought mine 15 years ago for £500 and have no regrets."
Paul isn't alone in his views on used cars, with other mechanics and car experts also sharing their thoughts in recent months, reports the Express.
With the cost of living on the rise, more people are turning to the used car market for their latest motor purchase instead of buying new. Some have even opted for second-hand electric cars, although many remain hesitant.
Jeff Wong, a used car controller at Porsche Centre Bristol, told the Express that customers were still cautious due to concerns over battery health.

He explained: "People are now starting to ask the question. But now we have devices in all our Porsche centres where we can actually test the battery life of an electric vehicle. Our cars are around the five-year mark, 2020 is when they were first launched, so they are about five years old.
"We are getting more and more people asking the questions, and we can quite simply plug in the batteries and tell the customers exactly what kind of life is left on these cars. Hopefully, with that we can give them good news and give them more confidence buying these cars."
Meanwhile, other motoring experts have been providing advice on the prime time to flog a second-hand motor as well as the best time to snap one up.
A spokesperson for the car selling service BigWantsYourCar.com told the Express that the optimal period for offloading a used vehicle might have already gone by.
They said: "April is the sweet spot for selling a used car. Dealers need stock to replenish their forecourts after the surge in new car sales in March, and many buyers are looking for a more affordable alternative to a brand-new model."

Ulster Rally boss reveals why joining prestigious European series would be so special for showpiece

Representatives from the FIA, motorsport's governing body, are travelling to Newry next month where they will meet with event officials, including Clerk of the Course Wayne Turkington. If all goes to plan, and the Northern Ireland Motor Club showpiece ticks all the boxes, the understanding is it will become a round of the FIA European Historic Rally Championship. The Championship is touted as the 'ultimate celebration of rallying's glorious past', with each decade from the Sixties right up to the Noughties represented by an array of exotic machinery from Porsche's 911 Carrera and BMW's M3 E30 to Ford's endearing Escort Mk2. It comprises 10 rounds in 2025, with these running between March and November and visiting several countries, including Spain, Czech Republic, Austria, Finland and Portugal. Points-scoring rounds typically comprise 90 competitive miles, with crews tackling these over the course of one-and-a-half-days — a formula that works for the Ulster Rally. If Turkington and his team can bank a slot on the FIA EHRC calendar for 2026 it would have added significance as the Ulster Rally celebrates its 50th anniversary next August. 'We know the eyes of the motorsport world will be on us when the FIA representatives arrive, and we are determined to show that the Ulster Rally is ready to take its place on the European stage,' said Turkington. 'Securing a spot on the FIA European Historic Rally Championship would be a big endorsement of the event's quality and illustrious history. 'To bring the FIA European Historic Rally Championship to Northern Ireland in the same year that the Ulster Rally celebrates its golden anniversary would be incredibly special. 'It would be a fitting tribute to everyone who has contributed to the event over the past five decades, from volunteers and competitors to sponsors and spectators.' Plans for the 49th instalment of the Modern Tyres Ulster Rally are well underway, with one title potentially set to be decided on the weekend of August 15th and 16th. A win would see the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship title return to Callum Devine and Noel O'Sullivan who have been in imperious form since April. The Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 team-mates have triumphed on three of the four rounds they have started, including the Circuit of Ireland Rally, Killarney Rally of the Lakes, and Donegal International Rally.

SPIED: 2027 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Will Justify Ludicrous Price With More Power Than Ever

The latest spy shots give us more insight than ever before, and a new video shows us what the turbocharged mill will sound like, so scroll to the bottom of this article if you don't care about all the technical details. For everyone else, let's recap what the rumor mill has claimed – right after taking a look at the much wider body. The mule has some tacked-on flares on the rear fenders, with full replacement (vented) fenders at the front. If these elements are representative of the production bodywork, the GT2 RS will be the widest 911 ever. Other changes? The tailpipes are offset to the sides of the diffuser panel, unlike the central placement of naturally aspirated GT cars, and the front spoiler is more aggressive. Hybrid Power Is Coming More than two years ago, Autocar reported that the 992 GT2 RS would feature a mild-hybrid powertrain based on technology originally developed for the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid and its successor, the 963 LMDh hypercar. The report claimed that the battery would reside behind the seats for a 39:61 weight balance, and since then, Porsche has put something similar into production with the 992.2 911 Carrera GTS and its T-Hybrid system. Thus, it's reasonable to assume that the GT2 RS will continue to base its powertrain on that of the 911 Turbo (currently a 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six, formerly a 3.8), supplementing it with an electric motor. The last GT2 RS produced 691 horsepower, and if rumors can be believed, the new one will make as much as 850 hp. It's worth noting that some reports have indicated a 4.0-liter engine for the GT2 RS, and as exciting as that would be (with or without turbocharging), it doesn't sound particularly cost-effective. Then again… The Price Will Cause Swooning In February of this year, The Supercar Blog reported the leaked price of the new GT2 RS: €450,000 before any deductions. At the time, that worked out to around $488,000, but today, that Euro figure equals $528,000. The last GT2 RS was originally limited to 1,000 units, and the new one will likely have a similarly small production run, which helps justify the cost. Whatever the true pricing, we all know Porsche will sell every last car it can make. That run is expected to begin in time for deliveries to be made in June 2026. Amazon's 'time saver' robot vacuum with hailed a 'game changer' and now 63% off

The Lefant M210P Robot Vacuum Cleaner has been reduced by £150, with shoppers saying it 'far exceeded' their expectations Amazon has restocked one of its top-selling robot vacuum cleaners and slashed the price by more than 60%. The Lefant M210P Robot Vacuum Cleaner has been reduced from £239.99 to £89.98 – a discount of £150.01. The device sold out earlier this month and frequently appears on Amazon's best-seller list, currently ranking fifth behind rivals such as the number one eufy G50 Robot Vacuum Cleaner (£149.99). However, those opting for the Lefant brand can now enjoy a 63% discount on this vacuum. Designed to automatically collect dust and debris from both carpeted and hard floors. The gadget offers four cleaning modes and can detect when it's cleaning carpet, increasing its suction power for optimal performance. It can also be programmed to clean at specific times via a smartphone app or using Alexa voice control. Its compact design – measuring 28cm in diameter and 7.8cm tall – allows it to clean under furniture, while its anti-collision sensors help it avoid obstacles. The Lefant also has a long-lasting battery that can run for 120 minutes on a single charge and will automatically return to its charging point when it needs to recharge. Additionally, its 500ml dust bin capacity means it can hold more waste, reducing its cleaning time. However, unlike competitor models like the Shark Matrix Plus (£399.99) or Hoover HG4 Robot Vacuum Cleaner (£249), the Lefant does not offer the ability to map areas for cleaning on the app, reports the Express. For those content to manage without this function, the Lefant M210P Robot Vacuum Cleaner has secured a 4.2-star rating from more than 6,000 reviews. Customers have praised the 'dust gobbler' as a brilliant time saver, with many saying they wish they had 'got one sooner'. One satisfied shopper said: "Seriously impressed. I thought this was some sort of gimmick, but I was wrong. This little dust gobbler does an outstandingly good job, the entire downstairs area was cleaned, even reaching areas I thought it wouldn't. "It was super easy to set up and start up. This has far exceeded what I thought it was capable of, I would rate it 10/10. Wish I'd got one sooner, it's a game changer." Another said: "Amazing for hard floors. I was a bit worried that I expected too much from this little guy, but I was wrong. Battery life is approximately one hour 30 minutes. "Docks itself when it needs charging. Easy to schedule through the app. It has found so much dust from under the sofas I didn't know was there. Not mega loud when in operation. Really recommend for hard floors." This more mixed three-star review said: "Ideal for small jobs. If you want a simple to operate low cost cleaner this could be a good choice. Struggles a bit on deep pile but ideal for hardwood or similar floors." While another glowing review said: "Great machine. It has been a year since I purchased this. It is great value for money. Cleans well, doesn't need a lot of time to charge, it's not too loud and does the job. It is a time saver and my little helper. Lefant's customer service is great. They helped me immediately when I had a problem."
