Sakshi won India's first gold at the second World Boxing Cup in the women's 54kg final, defeating USA's Yosline Perez. India secured 11 medals overall.
Two-time youth world champion Sakshi delivered a commanding performance to secure India's first gold medal at the second World Boxing Cup, triumphing in the women's 54kg final on Sunday.
The 24-year-old showcased her trademark aggression and precision, overpowering USA's Yosline Perez with a unanimous decision victory.
India's boxing contingent has enjoyed a highly successful campaign at the event, securing a total of 11 medals. This follows their strong showing in the first leg of the tournament held in Brazil, where the team won six medals, including one gold and one silver.
In the first session of finals, four Indian boxers competed, but it was Sakshi who emerged as the standout performer. Her speed, footwork, and flurry of combination punches proved too much for her American opponent, earning her the top spot on the podium.
Meanwhile, Meenakshi narrowly missed out on gold in the women's 48kg category. Despite a spirited effort against local favorite Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan, she lost in a close 3-2 split decision.
Silvers for Jugnoo and Pooja Rani
In other bouts, Jugnoo (men's 85kg) and Pooja Rani (women's 80kg) settled for silver medals after losing their respective finals.
Jugnoo was outboxed by Kazakhstan's Bekzad Nurdauletov in a 0-5 decision, while Pooja Rani suffered the same fate against Australia's Eseta Flint, also losing 0-5.
India's medal tally could grow further, with four more boxers set to fight for gold in the evening session. Leading the charge is Hitesh Gulia (men's 70kg), who won gold in the Brazil leg. He will be joined by Abhinash Jamwal (men's 65kg), Jaismine (women's 57kg), and Nupur (women's 85+kg) as India looks to cap off the tournament on a high.

‘Virat Kohli said people think I'm a great Test cricketer…': Shubman Gill used same ‘captaincy line', reveals Karthik

Shubman Gill couldn't have asked for a better start to life as Indian captain, particularly with the bat in his hand. After a century in the first Test of his career as skipper in Leeds, Gill had the kind of match that comes to define legacies: 269 in the first innings, followed by 161 in the second at Edgbaston, a player-of-the-match performance to help India level the series in England. Shubman Gill waves to fans after receiving the player of the match medal.(AP) Gill's entire performance in Birmingham was so authoritative and in control that it reminded Dinesh Karthik of a former India captain and made him think Gill was going to step into those captaincy boots like a duck takes to water. Speaking on Sky Cricket's podcast, Karthik narrated how he saw flashes of Virat Kohli in how Gill carried himself. 'Athers, you spoke about Virat Kohli. I met him a few days ago, and this talk about captaincy came up,' said Karthik in response to Michael Atherton. 'He said people think 'I'm a great Test cricketer, I enjoyed my Test batting, which I did, but the fact is that getting my captaincy was the best thing to happen in my life.' Why I am saying this is that the same line was used by Shubman Gill.' 'World of cricket has to take notice…' Kohli is considered one of India's greatest Test captains, but what sets him apart is his ability to thrive despite that added pressure. If Gill's early captaincy stint at the age of 25 is any indication, he is set to go much the same way. Karthik argued that the international cricket fraternity must be ready for another Indian great in the making. 'He said 'I used to bat differently, but now that I've got captaincy, I almost think this is what my team requires, rather than me wanting to do something individually as a batter.' I said wow, this is something for which the world of cricket has to take notice,' said Karthik, who was not only a long-time teammate of Kohli's but also led Kolkata Knight Riders when Shubman Gill was breaking through in the IPL. 'Here is a man who has the appetite, he's got the skill, he's got the technique, but now he's got the mindset as well. I'm the captain, I'm going to lead from the front, lead off the front foot,' said Karthik of India's future at the helm of the Test team. The job's not done despite an extremely impressive first Test win for Gill – dominating and winning by 336 runs at Edgbaston. Attention now turns to the Lord's Test, where the batter will want to continue adding to its famous history books.

Wimbledon 2025: Teenager Andreeva sets up quarterfinal clash with Bencic

Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva powered her way into her first Wimbledon quarterfinal with a 6-2 6-3 win over American 10th seed Emma Navarro on Monday, becoming the youngest player in the last eight of the women's singles since 2005. The 18-year-old looked at home on Centre Court, using her booming serve, regularly above 110 miles per hour, and power from the baseline to book a meeting with Swiss Belinda Bencic in the next round. In doing so she matches the feat of compatriot Maria Sharapova in 2005 at the exact same age - 18 years and 62 days at the start of the tournament. Navarro struggled to return the Russian's serve, with Andreeva not giving up any points on her first serve throughout the first set. The American surrendered another break by hitting into the net from a fierce Andreeva forehand for 4-1. Navarro saved two set points but Andreeva converted the third courtesy of another unreturnable serve, taking the lead in the match after little more than half an hour of play. The second set brought an upturn in form for Navarro as the pair traded breaks and continued to slug it out from the baseline. However, Andreeva held on to a break advantage over her opponent and executed a beautifully weighted lob on her way to bringing up three match points. The teenager needed only one thanks to a fortunate net cord but had obviously lost track of the score as she lined up at the baseline again before apologising and running to the net to shake hands with her beaten opponent. 'Honestly, I kept telling myself I was facing break point and was trying to tell myself I'm not the one who is up on the score, I'm the one who is down and in the end I completely forgot the score. I happy I did it, otherwise I would have been three times more nervous on my match point,' she said on court. 'I felt like my serve was not bad today... happy that (coach) Conchita (Martinez) gives me nice advice and my serve keeps working,' added Andreeva.

"We were overjoyed when he took 10 wickets..did not remember my problem": Akash Deep's sister, who is battling cancer

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 8 (ANI): Akash Deep's sensational 10-wicket haul in India's historic win over England at Edgbaston wasn't just a sporting triumph; it was a deeply personal one. As the young pacer tore through the English batting lineup, his sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, who has been battling cancer for the past two months, felt immense joy and pride. 'Akash dedicated his victory to me, and I feel very proud of him... We were overjoyed when he took 10 wickets. We were all clapping here. I did not remember my sadness at all when he took wickets,' she told ANI. Akash revealed earlier after the match that he had kept his sister's illness private and was playing with one mission in mind, to make her happy. 'The biggest thing is that I have not told anyone yet. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is stable now. She is fine. She will be the happiest. She has been going through this mentally for the last two months,' Akash said in a heartfelt conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara. 'I was playing this match for her. I have to make her happy with this match,' he added. Akash's mother, Laddooma Devi, expressed immense pride in her son's performance, calling it the realisation of a long-cherished dream. 'I feel very proud... I am very happy... It was my dream that he should play for the Indian team... Maybe Akash takes 10-10 wickets like this. he should play like this for India in future,' she said. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer.
