John Oliver Says ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Cancellation Is ‘Incredibly Sad': ‘Terrible News for the World of Comedy'

Yahoo2 days ago
John Oliver has weighed in on CBS' cancellation of 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' calling it 'terrible news for the world of comedy.'
The 'Last Week Tonight' host was asked about the news by the Associated Press on Sunday at the first game of the Erie Moon Mammoths, a minor league baseball team rebranded by Oliver and his staff.

'Obviously I love Stephen, I love the staff, I love that show. It's incredibly sad,' Oliver said. 'I'm partly excited to see what they're going to do for the next 10 months, but yeah it's terrible, terrible news for the world of comedy.'
In addition to being part of late-night himself, Oliver had been a consistent guest on Colbert's 'Late Show' over the years. It was announced on Thursday that the show will end in May 2026 after 33 years on air, with CBS citing a 'purely financial decision.' However, there has also been speculation that the politically outspoken Colbert and 'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart could be under scrutiny as Skydance Media — led by the Trump-lauded David Ellison — prepares to acquire CBS parent company Paramount Global.
'Late-night shows mean a lot to me, not just because I work in them, but because even growing up in England, I would watch Letterman's show, which of course was Stephen's show and think what a glamorous world that was,' Oliver continued. 'So to have gotten to be on Letterman's show and on Stephen's show is always one of the most fun things.'
He concluded that it's 'very, very sad news' but he's 'looking forward to seeing what [Colbert's] going to do next because that man will not stop.'
Oliver joins Jimmy Kimmel in late-night hosts reacting to the news, who posted on his Instagram Story on Thursday night: 'Love you Stephen. Fuck you and all your Sheldons CBS.'

Pete Davidson Says It's 'Been My Dream' to Become a Dad in First Comments Since Elsie Hewitt Announced She's Expecting

Pete Davidson is one 'happy' future father. 'I'm very lucky and very, very happy,' Davidson, 31, told E! News at the New York City premiere of his new film, The Home, on Tuesday, July 22. The statement marked the Saturday Night Live star's first comments since his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, announced on July 16 that they are going to have their first baby together. Davidson told the outlet he is looking forward to 'being able to take care of something and show it the childhood I didn't have." "I assume you just try to give them what you didn't have, and what you didn't like, not do it,' he said. His friends, including Adam Sandler, have been supportive and believe he's going to be a great dad, Davidson said. "Everybody's just been super excited for me, because they know it's been my dream," Davidson said. "They all just have been like, 'You're going to be great at this. It's the best thing you'll ever do in your life.' " He added that Sandler 'gave me some great advice." 'It's been really nice that everyone's super excited,' Davidson continued. Davidson and Hewitt, 29, have been linked since March, when they were seen together in Palm Beach, Fla. Two months later, a source told PEOPLE they moved in together. Then, on July 16, Hewitt confirmed they are expecting when she shared a gallery of photos on Instagram that included a picture of a sonogram. 'Welp now everyone knows we had sex,' Hewitt captioned the post. 'They're both very nurturing people and are very, very happy together and to be starting a family,' an insider told PEOPLE last week. "They've been sharing privately with loved ones, and it's a really sweet time after everything Pete has overcome. He's so excited. He's always wanted to be a dad." A second source told PEOPLE that the couple are 'happy and cannot wait to welcome their baby' and that Davidson has 'grown up a lot, and he's so excited about this next chapter as a dad." Davidson's latest movie, The Home, is a horror film directed by James DeMonaco. It hits theaters on Friday, July 25, and also stars John Glover and Bruce Altman. Read the original article on People

‘The Voice' Gets Rid of One Major Thing for Season 29

'The Voice' Gets Rid of One Major Thing for Season 29 originally appeared on Parade. The Voice revealed exciting news for its 29th season today. It is returning with a new format, and the season will be labeled The Voice: Battle of Champions. As part of the new format, it will only feature three fan-favorite coaches, rather than the usual four: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Adam Levine, all of whom have at least one win to their name. Buried in the release was the announcement that the semi-finals, which include the Top 9, and the finale, featuring the Top 4, will be voted on by a new voting block. The group will be comprised of super fans, including former Voice artists, who will be in the audience and also get to vote for their favorite as part of the in-studio audience voting. But bottom line, what that means is that there will be no live shows and no voting by America. Other changes to the format for the season are: 🎤 SIGN UP for our The Voice newsletter to get access to exclusive news, interviews, insider info, sneak peeks & more🎤 Blind Auditions Coaches compete against each other in the 'Triple Turn Competition' (vying for the most three-chair turns), with the winner gaining a special advantage in the next round. The difference for this season is that the teams will be comprised of only 10 artists, rather than 14, making it necessary for the coaches to be pickier in their selections. Battles The coach with the most three-chair turns automatically earns a 'Super Steal' for the Battles. This coveted prize can only be used once and trumps any other coach's attempt to steal, guaranteeing a win. Knockouts Each coach brings back two fan-favorite artists from their teams in previous seasons to compete in an 'In-Season All-Star Competition.' All-stars represent their former coaches as they battle in head-to-head sing-offs. The coach with the most sing-off wins is guaranteed a second finalist in the finale. For this special episode, coaches call upon original Voice coach CeeLo Green to sit in on the competition and determine the winner of each All-Star Showdown. Related: The concept of superfans voting is not new to NBC. It was employed by another competition show, America's Got Talent: The Champions. It remains to be seen how it works for The Voice. The return of Clarkson in one of the red swivel chairs is a plus. She brought a lot of joy to her seasons as a coach, which came to an end when The Kelly Clarkson Show was moved from Los Angeles to filming in New York City. Possibly because of the new format, it became workable for her to juggle her schedule to film both shows concurrently. But before all this happens in Spring 2026, Season 28 of The Voice will return this fall with coaches Reba McEntire, Niall Horan,Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé. The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
