PM Modi wishes countrymen as nation celebrates Guru Purnima
The day, deeply rooted in Indian tradition, honours the pivotal role played by gurus in guiding individuals from ignorance to enlightenment.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, "Best wishes to everyone on the special occasion of Guru Purnima."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted citizens on the auspicious day, highlighting the enduring significance of the guru-disciple bond in Indian culture.
"On the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, I pay my respects to all teachers. In Indian culture, the guru-disciple relationship is not only a medium of education and initiation but also a lifelong guide," he wrote on X.
"Throughout our history, gurus have always worked to instil moral values, knowledge, conduct, culture, and a sense of loyalty towards the motherland in their disciples. On this occasion, I extend my best wishes to all teachers contributing to nation-building," Shah added.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended his greetings and reflected on the spiritual importance of the day.
"By the grace of the Guru, the disciple progresses from ignorance to self-realisation, from darkness to light," he posted on X.
"With heartfelt reverence, we honour the great Gurus who shape the disciple's personality with values, service, and truth, connecting them to the highest ideals of life on the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima!" he added.
CM Yogi also paid tribute at the 'samadhis' of his revered gurus, Mahant Avaidyanath and Mahant Digvijaynath.
Celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains, Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima, marking the birth anniversary of sage Veda Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata and compiler of the Vedas.
Across the country, the day is being observed with spiritual activities, including Guru puja, prayers, and teachings. Devotees are visiting temples to offer their prayers and express gratitude to their spiritual and academic mentors for their guidance and wisdom.

What is blood money and can it save Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen?
The clock is ticking for Indian-origin nurse Nimishi Priya, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen for allegedly killing a Yemeni national. Nimisha Priya has been lodged in a jail in Yemen's capital city of Sana'a since 2017, when she was convicted of the Yemeni national's murder. (File Photo) Priya was sentenced to death in 2018 for the alleged murder of her business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi. Yemen's President Rashad al-Alimi had given the nod for her execution in January this year. As Priya's family and the Indian government looked for options to save the Kerala native, the Islamic Sharia law presents one option that could get her death sentence cancelled - 'blood money' also known as 'diya'. What is blood money? Can it save Nimisha Priya? Under the Islamic Sharia law, blood money or 'diya' means that the accused provides financial compensation to the family of the victim in serious crimes such as murder. The law notes that murder is of two types: by intent, and the other is by mistake. The Sharia law states that the punishment for murder by intent is death or any other punishment proportionate to the nature of the crime. "But if it is not a willful murder but a murder by mistake, the punishment according to verse (4:92) is ransom money (blood money). But if a remission is made by the heirs of the slain out of their own goodwill, they are allowed to do so. In such a case, it is incumbent on the murderer to abide by what has been settled and pay it in a commendable manner," it reads. The option of blood money in this case gains significance as Yemen is a country that follows the Islamic Sharia law. The system of blood money leaves the fate of the offender in the hands of the victim's family. The Sharia law does not state a fixed amount for 'diya'. However, it can be negotiated by the victim's family. In the Quran, Islam's central religious text, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:178) says on 'diya': "O believers! The law of retaliation is set for you in cases of murder—a free man for a free man, a slave for a slave, and a female for a female. But if the offender is pardoned by the victim's guardian, then blood-money should be decided fairly and payment should be made courteously. This is a concession and a mercy from your Lord. But whoever transgresses after that will suffer a painful punishment." The payment of the blood money or 'diya' might prevent the execution of Nimisha Priya. Nimisha Priya's family The family of the nurse from Kerala's Palakkad have been struggling to save her, and had earlier also agreed to pay the blood money. They have been trying to negotiate with the victim, Talal Abdo Mahdi's family, to save Nimisha Priya from the death sentence. Her husband, Tomy Thomas, a daily wage labourer and driver, has reportedly been forced to send their daughter, a Class 7 student, to a hostel due to financial limitations. The family is carrying the weight of a ₹60 lakh debt, which it took in 2015 to help Priya set up a clinic in Yemen, which was shut down in 2017. Priya's mother, Premakumari, had also travelled to Yemen last year as part of the efforts to secure her release from the Yemeni prison. The 38-year-old nurse is currently lodged in a jail in Yemen's capital city of Sana'a, a region controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis. A government source reportedly told PTI, "We have been closely following the matter since then. We have been in regular touch with local authorities and her family members and rendered all possible assistance. We continue to closely follow the matter." New Delhi is reportedly undertaking efforts to prevent Priya's execution. However, it is encountering certain complications as the Indian side does not have any formal contacts with the Houthi rebels. SC to hear plea to save Nimisha Priya The Supreme Court on Thursday will hear a plea seeking a direction to the central government to engage diplomatic channels to save Nimisha Priya, who is set to be executed in Yemen on July 16. "Save Nimisha Priya - International Action Council", an organisation which extends legal support to assist the Indian-origin nurse, has filed the plea in the apex court.

He is also allegedly behind last year's killing of NCP leader Baba Siddique in Mumbai. Commenting on the murder of businessman Sanjay Verma in Abohar on July 7 and the delay in arresting the three assailants, Cheema said: 'We will not allow anyone to vitiate the law and order situation. We will deal with anti-social elements with an iron fist.' 'Bishnoi takes responsibility for every murder sitting inside jail. What does this mean and why is he kept in Gujarat jail?' he said, demanding a reply from the Centre. He blamed the Congress for sheltering gangsters like Mukhtar Ansari while it was in power. The notorious gangster from Uttar Pradesh was brought to a jail in Punjab and given VIP facilities, Cheema said. Police records show the support of Shiromani Akali Dal leaders to anti-social elements, Cheema claimed, describing the opposition party as 'the root cause of the drug mafia in Punjab'. 'The opposition parties have patronised gangsters and the AAP government is cleaning the rot,' he added.

Dharmendra Pradhan opens VCs' meet to review NEP 2020 implementation
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday inaugurated a two-day Vice Chancellors' Conference in Kevadia, Gujarat, bringing together over 50 heads of central universities to evaluate the progress and strategise the next phase of implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) conference, jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and the Central University of Gujarat, marks five years since the rollout of NEP 2020 and serves as a platform to align institutions with the national vision of Viksit Bharat by the inaugural session, Shri Pradhan underscored the transformation in India's higher education landscape over the last decade. He highlighted the rise in total enrolments to 4.46 crore—a 30% growth since 2014–15—along with significant progress in inclusivity, particularly the 38% rise in female enrolment and the increase in GER among SC and ST communities. Notably, the GER for women has now surpassed that of men, and the number of PhD scholars, especially women, has seen a steep climb. The Minister laid out the Panch Sankalp—five guiding principles of NEP 2020—as the roadmap for university leadership: Next-gen emerging education, Multidisciplinary education, Innovative education, Holistic learning, and Bharatiya Knowledge Systems. These, he said, must be integrated into campus practices to foster a culturally rooted yet globally relevant education a 'students-first' approach, Shri Pradhan called on Vice Chancellors to shape institutions that prioritise student growth, skilling, and innovation. "Students are the core strength of our nation. We must prepare them to be not only job seekers but job creators, social entrepreneurs, and ethical innovators," he minister reiterated the government's goal of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035. He stressed the need for universities to reform curricula, enhance digital infrastructure, invest in faculty training, and encourage multidisciplinary integration to meet this target. To this end, he urged every university to prepare a strategic roadmap for implementing NEP 2020 in full PAPER AND INSTITUTIONAL ROADMAPSEach university has been asked to prepare a strategy paper outlining steps for achieving NEP goals, including subject integration, promotion of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), and skilling through tech-based education. Universities are also encouraged to host similar internal conferences to drive awareness and alignment on of the Central University of Gujarat, Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, elaborated on the "Six Principles" of Karmayoga and emphasised the value of traditional Indian knowledge systems in shaping individuals and society. He urged institutional heads to apply these values to everyday functioning and Vineet Joshi, Secretary of Higher Education, called the conference a timely opportunity to reflect on achievements and refine future strategies. He said NEP 2020 is a vision rooted in accessibility, equity, affordability, quality, and accountability, and aims to position universities as ecosystems for innovation and critical thinking—not merely degree-granting Secretary Dr. Sunil Barnwal highlighted the foundational pillars of NEP 2020 and the importance of collaborative partnerships among stakeholders in advancing reform DISCUSSION THEMESAcross the two-day conference, ten thematic sessions will delve into core issues aligned with NEP objectives.
