PADAWAN (June 30): Kampung Annah Rais is set to be transformed into a Bidayuh cultural heritage village following a RM6.5 million allocation by the Sarawak government through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
According to Mambong assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, the funds would be used to improve basic tourism infrastructure, including visitor trails, handicraft spaces, cultural information centres and community training in tourism management.
The Sarawak Deputy Transport Minister added this initiative was part of the state's broader rural development strategy focusing on tourism, culture and agriculture.
'Kampung Annah Rais has unique historical, cultural and Bidayuh heritage values. Efforts to upgrade tourism facilities here would not only bring economic benefits to the local community but also help promote our cultural heritage to the outside world,' he said at the Petronas Gawai 2025 Driving Life Programme held at the village on Saturday, according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report.
Located approximately 48 kilometres from Kuching, Kampung Annah Rais is renowned for its traditional Bidayuh longhouses, hot springs, and the continued practice of unique cultural customs.
At the same event, 200 underprivileged families from across the Padawan Subdistrict received food basket donations in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak 2025 celebration.
The welfare programme was organised by Yayasan Petronas in collaboration with the Kuching Division Resident Office and the Padawan Subdistrict Office.
Petronas Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu said a total of 585 families statewide have benefited from the programme this year.
Also present were Kuching Division Resident Dayang Joanita Azizah Abang Morshidi, Padawan Subdistrict administrative officer Julius Scott Sapong and Annah Rais village chief Joda Mamung.

Over RM1 million in MRP, Unifor grants disbursed for Opar's development

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the cheques were officially handed over by Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang to representatives of the respective recipient organisations. The report stated that the MRP grants disbursed totalled RM405,600, benefitting associations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and KEMAS kindergartens within the Mas Gading parliamentary area. In addition, Billy also presented Unifor grants amounting RM720,000 to five religious institutions of various denominations operating within the Opar state constituency. The recipients of the Unifor grants included Persatuan Penganut Apostolik Kuching, Kampung Sebako; St Jacob's Chapel, Kampung Temaga Dayak; St George's Church, Kampung Bokah; St Jude's Church, Kampung Stom Muda; and Rumah Adat Kampung Semapu. 'The handing over of these grants is part of the state government's ongoing efforts to ensure that community development and public facilities are implemented in a comprehensive and inclusive manner, regardless of religious or ethnic background,' Billy emphasised. Anwar launches Kota Madani, a RM4bil smart city for civil servants
PUTRAJAYA: Kota Madani, a large-scale integrated RM4bil initiative to address the housing needs of 10,000 civil servants, was launched on Thursday (June 26) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The development will be fully funded and maintained by developer Putrajaya Holdings under a build-lease-maintain-transfer model. Anwar said such a city, while providing all necessary facilities, should also ensure that it is not "culturally barren". "The Madani concept, as we know, encompasses all aspects of human life and its environment – the relationship between man and nature," he said at the launch. "Only through this balance can we become ummatan wasata (a just and balanced nation). A balanced nation becomes an example to others. "I want the Madani concept to serve as the model for urban development in all cities across our country. I urge state authorities to closely monitor development activities. "Look at what we can do – do not simply submit to the will of developers. We should be the ones planning; developers are merely implementers who may offer input to improve plans, not to determine the entire project." While not denying developers' right to seek profits, noting that no developer would undertake a RM4bil project without expecting returns, Anwar said the project must still align with Madani principles and values and be a civilised or virtuous city. "I will bring this matter to the Cabinet level, because these projects involve government land and agencies such as the Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS). "A 'Madani city' (is) not just based on physical development and technology like New York or London, but... rooted in faith, sincerity, compassion, innovation, and sustainable value. "The 'Kota Madani' concept is interesting because it emphasises sustainability and accessibility. "Vehicles are separated or placed underground, "People can walk easily to schools, mosques, kindergartens, gyms and community halls, "Weather challenges like heat or rain are taken into consideration in the design. "Urban planning should be thoughtful – this is the job of architects and city planners, not just government officers," he said. Earlier, in her opening speech, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that with such a development, civil servants living in Kota Madani would be able to save up to RM1,000 monthly. "The beneficiaries of the development will be approximately 10,000 civil servants. "Currently, the actual need for government quarters in Putrajaya stands at 35,000 units. However, only 22,000 units are available at present. "This has resulted in a high demand for quarters, with 17,000 applications currently on the waiting list," she said, adding that the number of government quarters has remained the same for 20 years. Kota Madani will span 41.28ha (102 acres) and have 10,000 residential units to accommodate more than 30,000 people. The vertically developed township will integrate artificial intelligence, high-efficiency digital infrastructure and green mobility systems, part of efforts to turn all Federal Territories into low-carbon, sustainable and secure cities.
