Govt favours wealth creation; profit not a bad word, says FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Economic Times01-06-2025
NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday said the Modi government promotes wealth creation and encou-rages entrepreneurs to earn profits through ethical practices without inhibitions.
This is in stark contrast to the stance adopted by the votaries of socialism or com-munism, who looked down upon wealth creation in earlier deca-des, she said, indicating that resources can be distributed only when they are generated. Sitharaman was addressing the National Commemorative Seminar on 60 Years of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya's Integral Humanism Lectures.
"Profit was a bad word (for socialists and communists), whereas that's not what we believe in. We would like to have profit created by genuine ethical practices, and that is what is going to create wealth for the nation," she said.
Wealth creation has never been considered a taboo in the long Indian tradition, the finance minister said, emphasising that "wealth creators are not thieves".
INTEGRAL HUMANISM
Sitharaman said every govern-ment policy under former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and PM Modi has been very reflective of this "integral humanism". Upadhyaya, leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was a proponent of the philosophy of integral humanism.
"Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya wanted that while planning, we must keep in mind the person at the very bottom of the system so that he can be uplifted keeping his dignity intact," she said. She also cited Upadhyaya's in-sistence on focusing on seven 'M's while making policies for employment generation with a view to building "Bharatiya technology" man, money, ma-terial, management, motive, market and machine.
Emphasis on Labour-intensive Industries
The finance minister also sought to distinguish between the economic model followed by former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the immediate aftermath of independence and the vision of Upadhyaya. Nehru's capital-intensive growth model was influenced by that of the USSR, Sitharaman said, but Upadhyaya—conscious of the fact that the Indian economy had been shaped for centuries by small and medium businesses and that 'we are a labour-intensive country' believed it was a flawed model. So, he was in favour of an economic framework that would give due emphasis on labour-intensive industries, she said.
AI TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY Sitharaman said AI is set to improve productivity. The minister pointed out that AI poses some challenges in terms of training people, among others, but it also brings a lot of opportunities with it which need to be tapped. She said young people inclined towards AI are being trained in it through various initiatives, she said. 'The government has announced four centres of excellence for AI in the fields of education, agriculture, health and cities of the future.'

PM Modi offers $565 mn credit line to Maldives, opens door for FTA

India will extend a $565 million line of credit to the Maldives as part of a renewed push to deepen bilateral ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, following high-level talks with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu in Male. The two sides also agreed to begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and move forward on a bilateral investment treaty, signalling a broader economic and strategic reset after months of strained relations. 'India is also proud to be the most trusted friend of the Maldives,' PM Modi said after the meeting, highlighting the island nation's significance in India's 'Neighbourhood First' and 'MAHASAGAR' (Maritime and Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. The Rs 4,850 crore credit line — equivalent to nearly $565 million — is expected to finance infrastructure and development projects in the Maldives, where India is seeking to maintain influence amid a growing Chinese presence. The two leaders also reaffirmed mutual cooperation in defence and maritime security. 'Mutual cooperation in the field of defence and security is a testament to mutual trust,' PM Modi said, adding, 'India will always support the Maldives to strengthen its defence capabilities.' The meeting marks the first in-person interaction between Modi and Muizzu since the latter took office last year amid tensions over his pro-China tilt and calls for Indian military personnel to leave the island nation, which was implemented shortly after his electoral win. Modi landed in the Maldives on Friday (July 25) for a two-day official visit, where he will serve as the chief guest at the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, and was greeted with a traditional cultural performance by schoolchildren. This marks the first official state visit hosted by President Muizzu since he assumed office in November 2023, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The Indian prime minister's visit to the Maldives comes immediately after a two-day trip to the United Kingdom, where India and the UK signed a landmark trade agreement aimed at boosting bilateral commerce by cutting tariffs on automobiles, textiles, spirits and several other goods.

Shri Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD and CEO, NSE shares his views on the historic trade deal between India and UK

Today, 24th July 25, would be considered a historic day because today India and UK entered into a free trade agreement, which is a very important agreement in the history between two countries in terms of trade. Today, Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and Honorable Prime Minister of UK, Shri K Starmer, both along with the Commerce Ministers on both sides were present along with other important ministers. The free trade agreement between two countries is actually independent in a way of the multilateral arrangements that India has had in terms of WTO and other things. This is actually because 99% of all the exports, which India does, will now be covered under this. And almost zero tax, almost all of them will attract from fisheries to agriculture, to pharmaceuticals, to engineering exports, to literally every aspect, including cars and electric cars. We are going to have a free trade, literally zero tax from goods getting exported from India. Today, India and UK have a bilateral trade of around $56 billion, out of which $24 billion is merchandise exports and $32 billion is services. $24 billion is merchandise trade. And India is overall around $10 to $12 billion in surplus. But going forward, Indian professionals working in UK will not have to pay up to three years of social security tax, because they're not going to stay there for longer. And till the time they were paying that and almost 4000 crore a year, even now is going to be saved. Going forward, the visa framework is going to be easier and even Indian professionals will be able to work without office for a very long period. So I think that overall, there's going to be much larger saving going forward. Total target is to increase the bilateral trade from current $56 billion to $120 billion and probably it will be even larger because the leather and textiles and other goods exports itself, which used to attract some amount of tariff will be zero taxed and it will create a huge amount of jobs in India going forward. So for me, this is also a template for India to do a free trade agreement with other countries like US or EU, and even Japan for that matter. And that's going to be an interesting play. The other part is that the free trade agreement was being discussed for years between the Conservative government and the Indian BJP government for years. And when the Labour government came into play last year at UK, many people thought that now the free trade agreement between India and UK may not happen. But things have gone in the right direction. Today, I was there at the Honourable UK Prime Minister's country residence where this historic deal was signed. And that has removed a lot of cobwebs between the relationship between two countries, but also started a new chapter and kind of a first stepping stone because the entire multilateral trading system is slowly breaking down and the US is a leader in terms of ensuring that this happens. The breaking down of multilateral framework, which was against the US's interest and against even EU or UK or India's interest is actually happening. UK has taken lead in signing this particular agreement despite the new government taking the baton from the older government to discuss with us. Naturally, India had to also give some concessions to their side where almost 90% of their exports to India will also be in a way going at a very low duty or almost duty free. And they expect to have many Indian companies set up a shop in AI, in many other places or many other industries in UK. And so UK also expects to benefit quite a lot in terms of creation of more jobs. And naturally, India has also need for creating jobs and also increasing its exports to developed countries where the relation can be good. India has become very good, not only in services, but now also high tech exports like mobile phones and servers and other things and now even chips are going to be exported. But overall, this is a win-win deal which has been signed. And I'm sure we need to also thank the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji but in addition, we also need to thank the Commerce Minister Shri Piyush Goyal Ji for sticking to the agenda and getting a very beneficial trade agreement, SEPA, between India and UK signed today.

Luxury cars not the biggest opportunity UK senses in India after FTA. It's this

The UK government expects bigger inroads of up to $240 million (about ₹2,076 crore) in auto parts and engine exports to India, surpassing luxury cars, after its free-trade agreement with India. The pact opens up the Indian market for companies including GKN Automotive, Cosworth and Ricardo Plc, among others. According to the UK government's assessment, auto component exports will jump by about £190 million or 150%, suggesting that auto parts and engines to be a key winner for Britain as part of the trade deal. While India's auto component industry doesn't see it as a challenge, the UK's assessment suggests a spike in imports from India in the next few years. Tariff cuts, mutual benefits Under the tariff agreement, most auto parts such as brakes, axles, airbags, suspensions, and engine components imported from the UK will see a gradual reduction in duties from 16% to 0% over 10 years. In return, the UK has agreed to waive 8.5% customs duty on Indian auto component imports. Also Read: Twin wins for Indian auto sector in free-trade pact with UK India exported auto parts worth approximately $191.6 million to the UK, while imports stood at around $138.6 million, according to Saket Mehra, Partner at Grant Thornton Bharat. 'With tariffs on components set to be significantly reduced, Indian manufacturers- particularly those supplying to global OEMs (original equipment makers), are well-positioned to expand their footprint in the UK market." India has also opened up the market for luxury car imports from the UK. Total auto imports from the UK stood around $196 million in FY25, as per commerce ministry data. Industry outlook Better market access and competition from British players come at a time when the government is working on a plan to boost exports of the country's component players to better integrate them in global supply chains. According to an industry consultant working with auto component players, there hasn't been any feeling of the FTA having a disruptive impact on the industry. "In conversations with executives at auto component makers, there is no sentiment that the FTA will have a disruptive impact for the Indian players due to opening up of the market," the person said. Strategic fit for India The country's leading auto component body, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India and many component players said the free-trade agreement will create more opportunities for the domestic industry. "The deal is a significant milestone for the Indian auto component sector, unlocking new opportunities in exports, R&D collaboration, and sustainable manufacturing," said Nirmal K Minda, executive chairman at Uno Minda. 'It also aligns seamlessly with India's Make in India vision, strengthening our role in global supply chains." Amit Kalyani, vice-chairman and joint managing director, Bharat Forge Ltd, said, 'Indian manufacturers can now tap into the UK market with greater competitiveness, improving their global footprint." Also Read: E-truck subsides are on their way—but with a rider and the clock ticking The country's $111-billion auto component industry is a trade surplus sector. In financial year 2024-25, auto component exports stood at $22.9 billion against imports of $22.4 billion. Among the largest exported components, the country dominates in engine parts shipped to various markets, including North America and Europe. Over $7 billion worth of exports went to the North American region alone in the last financial year.
