Content: The profile of stage five, between Chasseneuil-du-Poitou and Guéret, looks ripe for a breakaway in the final: there are three categorised climbs inside the last 36km, two category fours and one category three, after a relatively flat 130km or so.
However, the location of the day's intermediate sprint, at Dun-le-Palestel after 127km, may lead certain teams to try and control the race until then. Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx–Protime), who leads the green jersey standings after two stage wins in two days, said yesterday she may try to get in breakaways to fight for more points. But perhaps Marianne Vos, the overall leader and yellow-jersey wearer, and her Visma-Lease A Bike team will lend a hand in controlling things.
At 165.8km, this transitional stage is the longest of this year's race. It will be interesting to see how fierce the battle to form an early breakaway becomes, because there are already plenty of tired bodies in the peloton, with a few teams and riders hoping for a relatively easy day with a non-threatening breakaway allowed up the road.
This being the Tour de France Femmes, though, it'll probably be flat-out all the way.

Today, the peloton will ride 111.9km from Chambéry to Saint François Longchamp – Col de la Madeleine, taking in more than 3,500 meters of climbing, making it a brutal day out. The first ascent of the day will come at 13km, with the category one Col de Plainpalais (13.2km at 6.3%). The sharp Côte de Saint-Georges-d'Hurtières comes duing the second half of racing, and then it's all go towards the finish at the summit of the imposing Col de la Madeleine (18.6 km at 8.1%, rising to over 2,000m above sea level). It's the penultimate day of the Tour, so any GC contenders who want to make their mark will surely have plans for this decisive stage. While Kim Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal) hung on to the yellow jersey yesterday after being dropped on the final climb, she'll face stiff competition from Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Visma-Lease a Bike), Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon/SRAM), Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) and Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx Protime) who are all biting at her heels (none are further than 35secs behind the maillot jaune). Le Court Pienaar's teammate and powerful climber Sarah Gigante might fancy the stage win and the Mauritian rider spoke effusively yesterday about her colleague's strength coming into this mountain stage. Maëva Squiban (UAE Team ADQ) made it two victories in a row yesterday, so I'm excited to see what she's got in store today. Shirin van Anrooij and Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek) Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez), Silke Smulders and Mavi García (Liv Alula Jayco) are worth keeping an eye on in terms of a potential breakaway. Liverpool's Tyler Morton inching closer to joining Lyon in a deal worth up to £15m - with the Reds starlet in search of first-team football
Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is close to securing a move to French side Lyon worth up to £15million. The England U21 international has been looking to move for more regular first team game time and has attracted enquiries from a number of clubs including West Ham, Sporting Braga, Ajax and Strasbourg. Liverpool have been holding out for £15m for the 22-year old homegrown academy graduate and Lyon have now provisionally agreed terms with a deal expected to go through. Morton spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Championship side Hull City. The 22-year-old returned to Merseyside last season but could only manage six appearances in all competitions as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his maiden campaign in charge. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez remains an option for Saudi club Al Hilal. Liverpool have been holding out for £70m for the Uruguay international and have already rejected an approach from Al Nassr in February and again more recently from Napoli. Newcastle have Nunez on their long list of options but they have other targets higher up as priorities and Liverpool are yet to indicate if they will make a new bid for Alexander Isak. Meanwhile former Manchester United coach Simon Wiles has taken over as Liverpool U18 coach.
