Operation Ghost SIM: How Army, Assam Cops Tracked Down Pak-Linked Racket

Guwahati:
Seven people have been arrested from across India for running a fake SIM card racket with links to Pakistani agents, the Assam Police said. At least 14 more people were detained from Assam's Dhubri district for questioning, the police said.
To track down the accused and smash the racket, the Indian Army and the Assam Police joined forces in 'Operation Ghost SIM' and tracked all the accused across India.
The Assam Police first received intelligence from the army's Gajraj Corps about an illegal activity involving the use of fake SIM cards from hideouts in Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana, the police said.
They used the fake SIM cards to commit cyber crimes and anti-national activities including helping agents in Pakistan receive sensitive information.
After getting intelligence from the army, the Assam Police's Special Branch and the Special Task Force further analysed the information before deciding to launch 'Operation Ghost SIM'.
The teams raided many places across India simultaneously, sources said. While separate teams went to Rajasthan and Telangana, others went to Assam's Dhubri and Morigaon.
The joint operation launched on May 16 resulted in the arrest of seven key accused, identified as Saddik, 47, from PS Sikri in Rajaathan's Bharatpur'; Arif Khan, 20, from Rajasthan's Sahori Alwar; Sajid, 21, from Alwar; Akeek, 25, from Bharatpur; Arsad Khan, 34, from Bharatpur; Mofijul Islam, 19, from Dhubri, and Jakariya Ahmad, 24, from Assam's Bilasipara.
The joint operation found 948 SIM cards and other electronic devices.
"The operation was launched in the afternoon on May 16 and the seven people were picked up from various locations and arrested in connection with the case," Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh said.
He said the SIM cards were "not only used for cyber but also for anti-national activities". Mr Singh said the "numbers have been shared across and are being used by anti-national elements and inimical elements to use WhatsApp accounts that look as if they are India-based.
Further investigation is going on.

Security agencies gather evidence confirming Pakistani nationality of Pahalgam attackers

Security agencies have gathered evidence, including documents issued by the government of Pakistan and biometric data, confirming that the three slain foreign terrorists involved in the deadly Pahalgam attack were Pakistani nationals, officials said on Monday (August 4, 2025). The terrorists, identified as senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dachigam forest on the outskirts of Srinagar on July 28 during an operation code-named 'Mahadev'. They had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the April 22 attack in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow, which claimed 26 lives. Also read | Pahalgam terror attack: Photos recovered from an encounter site in 2024 helped identify terrorists The evidence collected shows that no local was among these terrorists, the officials said. Biometric records of Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), voter identity slips and digital satellite phone data, including logs and GPS waypoints, are among the clinching evidence gathered by the security agencies confirming the Pakistani nationality of the three terrorists, the officials said. They said the post-encounter investigation, including ballistics weapon-to-cartridge match and statements of two detained Kashmiri helpers, corroborated the terrorists' involvement in the Pahalgam attack. "For the first time, we have government-issued Pakistani documents in hand that nail the nationality of the Pahalgam attackers beyond doubt," a senior official said. Forensic, documentary and testimonial evidence collected during and after 'Operation Mahadev' conclusively shows that all three attackers were Pakistani nationals and senior LeT operatives who had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the day of the attack, the officials said, adding that no Kashmiri was part of the shooting team. The slain terrorists were identified as Suleman Shah alias "Faizal Jatt", an A++ category terrorist, mastermind and lead shooter; his close associate Abu Hamza alias 'Afghan', an A-grade commander and the second gunman; and Yasir alias 'Jibran', also an A-grade commander and the third gunman, the officials said. Along with weapons, the security forces recovered Pakistani government-issued documents, such as two laminated voter slips issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan, from the pockets of Shah and Hamza, they said. According to the officials, the voter serial numbers correspond to electoral rolls in Lahore (NA-125) and Gujranwala (NA-79), respectively. The officials said the NADRA-linked Smart-ID chips — a micro-SD recovered from a damaged sat-phone contained the NADRA biometric records (fingerprints, facial template, family tree) of all three men — confirming their Pakistani citizenship and addresses in Changa Manga (Kasur district) and Koiyan village near Rawalakot, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan-manufactured personal items like wrappers of 'CandyLand' and 'ChocoMax' chocolates (both brands produced in Karachi) were found in the same rucksack that carried spare magazines, the officials said, adding that lot numbers printed on wrappers were traced to a May 2024 consignment shipped to Muzaffarabad, PoK. On forensic and technical confirmation, the officials said, the 7.62x39 mm casings found in Baisaran were test-fired against the three AK-103 rifles seized on July 28 and the striation marks matched 100— while mitochondrial profiles extracted from blood on a torn shirt found in Pahalgam were identical to the DNA of the three bodies of the terrorists. The terrorists crossed the Line of Control (LoC) through north Kashmir's Gurez sector in May 2022, when the intelligence intercepts placed their radio check-in from the Pakistani side, the officials said. On April 21, they moved into a 'dhok' (seasonal hut) at Hill Park, 2 km from Baisaran, as was stated by two detained helpers, Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, who sheltered them overnight and provided them cooked food before they trekked to Baisaran the next day to carry out the attack. The GPS waypoints recovered from Shah's Garmin device match the exact firing positions reported by eyewitnesses, the officials said, adding that they escaped towards Dachigam after carrying out the attack. The shell casings at the scene matched the three rifles recovered from the terrorists after the encounter, the officials said. On digital footprints, they said a Huawei satellite phone (IMEI 86761204-XXXXXX) used by the terrorists had been pinging Inmarsat-4 F1 every night between April 22 and July 25. Triangulation narrowed the search grid to four square kilometres inside Harwan forest. Jammu and Kashmir Police released sketches of three people — Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai alias "Talha", and local Adil Hussain Thoker — on April 24. However, after the July 28 encounter, the agencies clarified that those sketches were based on a photograph found on a phone retrieved from an unrelated December 2024 shootout and the actual attackers were different. Another crucial evidence of Pakistan's involvement in the attack was the command and control links inside the neighbouring country, the officials said. They said LeT's south-Kashmir operations chief, Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Changa Manga in Lahore, was the overall handler as his voice samples from the recovered sat-phone matched his earlier intercepted calls. LeT Rawalakot chief Rizwan Anees also visited the families of the slain attackers on July 29 to organise 'Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza' (funeral prayers in absentia) and its footage is now part of the Indian dossier, they said.

Biometrics, docs confirm 3 slain Pahalgam attackers were Pak nationals: Report

Security agencies have confirmed that the three foreign terrorists killed in the Dachigam forest encounter on July 28 were Pakistani nationals, citing biometric evidence and documents issued by the Government of Pakistan, reports news agency PTI. After an intense firefight between terrorists in the Harwan area, three heavily armed terrorists were killed in an encounter under Operation Mahadev.(Basit Zargar/ANI) The slain men, identified as senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, were eliminated during 'Operation Mahadev' on the outskirts of Srinagar. They had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow that left 26 people dead. Officials told PTI said the evidence collected, including biometric data from Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), laminated voter slips, digital satellite phone data, and GPS logs, conclusively established their Pakistani identity. They confirmed that no local individual was among the attackers. 'For the first time, we have government-issued Pakistani documents that prove the nationality of the Pahalgam attackers beyond doubt,' a senior official said. The three terrorists were identified as: Suleman Shah alias Faizal Jatt – A-category terrorist, lead shooter, and mastermind; Abu Hamza alias Afghan – A-grade commander and second gunman; Yasir alias Jibran – A-grade commander and third shooter. Pakistani-issued documents, including two laminated voter slips from the Election Commission of Pakistan, were recovered from the bodies of Shah and Hamza. These slips correspond to voter rolls from Lahore (NA-125) and Gujranwala (NA-79), respectively. Investigators also recovered a micro-SD card from a damaged satellite phone, containing NADRA-linked Smart-ID data—fingerprints, facial scans, and family trees—verifying the men's citizenship and addresses in Changa Manga (Kasur district) and Koiyan village near Rawalakot in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Additional items recovered included Pakistani-manufactured goods, such as wrappers of 'CandyLand' and 'ChocoMax' chocolates made in Karachi. Lot numbers on the wrappers matched a consignment sent to Muzaffarabad, PoK, in May 2024. Ballistic analysis confirmed a match between the 7.62x39 mm cartridge casings found at the Baisaran attack site and the three AK-103 rifles recovered from the July 28 encounter. DNA analysis of blood on a torn shirt found in Pahalgam also matched the mitochondrial profiles of the three slain men. According to officials, the terrorists had infiltrated into India through the Gurez sector of north Kashmir in May 2022, with intelligence intercepts recording their radio check-in from the Pakistani side. On April 21, the trio took shelter in a seasonal hut near Hill Park, 2 km from Baisaran. Two detained locals—Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar—told investigators they had provided food and overnight shelter to the attackers before they proceeded to carry out the massacre the following day. GPS coordinates retrieved from a Garmin device carried by Shah matched eyewitness reports of firing positions during the attack. After the assault, the terrorists fled towards the Dachigam forest, where they remained hidden until the encounter. Officials also said a Huawei satellite phone (IMEI 86761204-XXXXXX) used by the attackers was actively pinging the Inmarsat-4 F1 satellite nightly between April 22 and July 25. Triangulation of its signal narrowed their hideout to a four-square-kilometre area within Harwan forest. Sketches of three suspects—Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai alias 'Talha', and local resident Adil Hussain Thoker—were initially released by Jammu and Kashmir Police on April 24. However, post-encounter verification revealed those images were based on unrelated photographs from a separate shootout in December 2024. Officials added that command-and-control links traced back to Pakistan further reinforced the country's involvement. LeT's south Kashmir operations chief, Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Changa Manga, Lahore, was identified as the overall handler. His voice samples matched intercepted communications retrieved from the satellite phone. Following the July 28 encounter, Rizwan Anees, LeT's Rawalakot chief, reportedly visited the families of the slain terrorists and organised Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers in absentia) on July 29. Footage of this gathering has been added to India's official dossier on the case, officials said.

Simultaneous Attacks By 80 Men Leave 8 Pakistani Soldiers Dead In Balochistan

Last Updated: The attackers, believed to be part of a Baloch insurgent group, arrived in 11 vehicles and began the assault by destroying communication equipment at the outposts. Eight Pakistani soldiers were killed and 11 injured in a coordinated militant assault on Sunday night in Balochistan's Panjgur district. According to official sources, over 80 heavily armed assailants launched a complex, multi-pronged attack on three separate military checkpoints in the remote Gwargo area, dealing a severe blow to the region's fragile security environment. The attackers, believed to be part of a Baloch insurgent group, arrived in 11 vehicles and began the assault by destroying communication equipment at the outposts. This strategic move reportedly cut off the units from backup support, enabling the attackers to lay an ambush for the quick response force that was dispatched to the scene. Three security personnel remain missing, with a manhunt underway in the rugged terrain. No group has formally claimed responsibility for the assault so far, but it bears the hallmarks of recent attacks by Baloch separatist factions that have stepped up operations against Pakistani forces. This latest incident comes on the heels of one of the deadliest days for Pakistani troops in recent history. Earlier in July, at least 20 Pakistani soldiers were killed in two separate ambushes in Balochistan within 12 hours, also involving the destruction of communication links and the use of decoys to mislead reinforcements. Balochistan has seen a sharp uptick in violence over the past year, with separatist groups targeting infrastructure projects, military installations, and security convoys. The province, rich in resources but plagued by political marginalisation and insurgency, remains a flashpoint in Pakistan's internal security landscape. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
