Durban July 2025 betting guide: Favourites, form and what to expect at Greyville
Image: Gold Circle
Eight of Eighteen is the favourite to take top honours at this weekend's running of the Durban July at Greyville Racecourse.
All eyes will be on the three-year-old colt, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by champion jockey Richard Fourie, as he heads into the R5 million Durban July on the back of some impressive results.
Eight of Eighteen, who comes in at 14/10 to win on Saturday, came out tops at the prestigious Cape Town Met in January, and again at the SplashOut Cape Derby a month later. And for good measure, the young colt was also victorious in the Daily News 2000 in Durban.
Sail The Seas, the only horse to beat Eight of Eighteen this year, will not be in Durban. Oriental Charm, the winner from last year, is expected to give Eight of Eighteen a run for his money, coming in at 11/2 to take top honours.

While Eight of Eighteen will be the name on everyone's lips on Saturday, punters shouldn't take their eyes off Oriental Charm, as his form going into this weekend is better than when he came out tops last year.
After a disappointing seventh place at the King's Plate in Kenilworth, the JP van der Merwe-ridden Oriental Charm earned two second-place finishes at the Cape Town Met and the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge in Durban.
What's shaping up is a thrilling head-to-head between the rising star and the proven champion. With Eight of Eighteen riding the momentum of a good 2025, and Oriental Charm hungry to reclaim his crown after coming close in recent starts, Saturday's race is expected to deliver fireworks down the final stretch at Greyville.
At 7/1 odds, Immediate Edge, who will be ridden by Callan Murray, should also be in the conversation come Saturday. He heads into the July on the back of four wins. But with all of his races having taken place at Turffontein this year, it remains to be seen if racing at sea level will have an impact on his day.
Five-year-old See It Again and The Real Prince, aged four, round out the top five at 25/2 and 14/1 odds.
The Michael Roberts-trained See It Again will be out to recapture some magic from 2023 when he won a number of races and finished second in the Durban July. The Real Prince, winner at the City of Cape Town Jet Master Stakes at Kenilworth, will also be keen to make a splash.

Gowns, glamour and social media: the rise of extravagance in matric dance fashion
Discover how today's Grade 12s are turning heads with their over-the-top outfits and social media-worthy looks for their matric dance. Image: TikTok Matric dance season is here, and let's be real, the fashion is getting wilder by the minute! Gone are the days of simple dresses and understated hairstyles. Today's Grade 12s are bringing the heat, and we're not just talking about their dancing skills. Think back to your matric dance days, or even just five years ago. The fashion has definitely evolved, with each passing year, the looks get more elaborate, more extravagant and more Instagram-worthy. We are talking about quality human hair wig installations that would set you back with at least R3 000 to R5 000, flawless make-up and gowns that would give celebrities a run for their money. And let's not forget the luxury cars and chauffeurs, because, why not? In addition to that, the date needs to match the energy and look equally lavish, possibly in a brand that can help pay off one's car debt. Many students have been sharing videos of themselves getting ready for their big day on social media. Here are some examples from TikTok: Why matric dance fashion has gone over the top So, what is behind this matric dance fashion frenzy? One of the many reasons is the pressure to keep up with the classmates. Students are feeling the need to outdo each other with their outfits, and parents are willing to splurge to make sure their kids fit in. But let's be honest, who would not want to look good on their special day while making a statement? But it's not just about fitting in; it's also about standing out and making a statement. Social media plays a huge role in this. Students want to create a moment, get likes and go viral. The generation gap and why the class of 2025 is taking it to the next level It is no secret that different generations have different styles and priorities. The mid-2000s kids, who are currently in Grade 12, are a unique bunch. They are all about living their best lives, expressing themselves and having a good time. And when it comes to matric dance, they have certainly not been holding back. With the rise of social media and influencer culture, these students have been exposed to a world of fashion trends, luxury brands and A-list events. It's no wonder they are bringing that same level of glamour and extravagance to their matric dance looks. A matric dance celebration is one significant event that many learners look forward to, besides their results at the end of the year. It is a time to celebrate 12 years of being in school and the progress just before catching the whiff of reality in tertiary. Lately, for many, it is also a night of glamour and showcasing their personalities outside of the school uniform that they wear all year. Expensive outfits are not the only thing that comes with celebrating the occasion. In comes the perfect suite to get ready in while waiting for the perfect date, who, if the student is fortunate enough, could be a celebrity or well-known influencer. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular for learners to invite well-known personalities to be their dates. Of course, for all this to happen, the parents spend thousands of rands in efforts to make their children's dream matric dance a reality. While it is fun to see students expressing themselves and having a good time, one can't help but wonder if the students are putting too much emphasis on material possessions and external validation, rather than the true meaning of the occasion.

Reset restore all settings to the default values Done Beginning of dialog window. Escape will cancel and close the window. While the pressure to secure engagements can be daunting, Nxumalo's words serve as a reminder that the road to success is often paved with perseverance. To aid these artists in their journey toward success, we have compiled essential tips below to help them secure bookings. Build a strong online presence In today's digital age, your online presence is often the first impression potential bookers will have of you. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are powerful tools for connecting with your audience and sharing snippets of your performances or artwork. Regularly engaging with followers, responding to comments, and utilising hashtags will enhance your visibility. Network within the industry Connections are critical in the arts industry. Attend local events and festivals to meet other artists, promoters, and venue owners. Don't hesitate to introduce yourself and share your passion for your craft. Building relationships can lead to referrals and recommendations, significantly increasing your chances of getting booked. Perfect your pitch Your pitch to venues and promoters needs to be concise and compelling. Tailor your communication to reflect an understanding of their specific needs and how you fit into their programming. Include links to your music or performances, highlight your previous experience and offer clear reasons why booking you would be an advantageous decision for them. Create a press kit A professional press kit is essential when approaching venues and promoters. Include a biography, high-resolution images, music samples or performance reels and any notable press coverage. This serves as a snapshot of your artistic identity and provides everything a potential booker might need to make their decision. Follow up After reaching out to venues or contacts, don't forget to follow up. A polite email or a WhatsApp message can remind them of your initial contact and your continued interest. This shows professionalism and enthusiasm, traits that can help keep you top of mind for future opportunities.
