MAGA Dad's Viral Journey Away From Trump

A Reddit post by a user who claims their father voted for Donald Trump twice has recently gone viral for revealing what finally turned their MAGA dad into a Trump critic. At the start of the post, the redditor explained what initially attracted their father to Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign. "What got him into Trump was the first primary debate he participated in, in which he brutally attacked Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and the others..." They went on to explain that their father, a business owner, personally benefited from Trump's tax cuts, which made his view of Trump's first presidency a "success," despite events like January 6. According to the redditor, things started to change for their father when Trump's tariff war threw his business into "disarray." The negative financial impact of Trump's tariff war made their father seek out more "accurate reporting" of Trump, and the new information "awakened" him. "He wishes Trump would stop being such an idiotic fuckup." And finally, the post ended with the redditor's realization about changing the minds of "casual Trump voters." "You can bring all that stuff up, and they'll just wave it off. But as soon as he does do something harmful that affects them, they can be turned." After reading the post, people in the comments shared their perspective on "uniformed voters" who supported Trump. "I just think so many people drank the 'John Wayne' kool aid in the Reaganite '80s, the idea that, like the lone gunslinger, Americans are singular, self sufficient individuals, not members of a society. So many in the U.S. bought that BS wholesale, like this guy's Dad," one user wrote. "He thinks he only need care about his business, his family and his bikes, but he forgets that for businesses to flourish he needs society at large to be healthy, he needs trade rules to be enforced, and he needs stability in trade hates paying taxes, but never thinks about why the roads are maintained, why water comes out of the tap or electricity out of the socket. He's been trained and rewarded to see himself as a lone entity, independent of all social bonds. Now he's been uncomfortably reminded he is part of an interdependent society, but I'm sure he'll forget the reminder soon enough. Individualism is too deeply ingrained in his psyche for him to abandon it now." "Everyone keeps saying 'they voted for this.' But in reality, some didn't. There are lots of uninformed voters out there. I'm not excusing it, but it's true. My dad is the same way," another user admitted. "He liked the sound bites he saw about draining the swamp and liked the idea of a businessman instead of a career politician. My dad is woefully misinformed and wouldn't listen to me either. But he's not an evil monster. Just complacent and kinda ignorant. He's also 83, so there's that." "They're not going to figure out Trump sucks until they get burned by the hot stove," this user wrote. And finally, "I feel like the real takeaway from this is that the dad is against something Trump did, but still doesn't regret his vote." "The popular Reddit sentiment is that conservatives are feeling regret now that his policies are hurting them, but the actual sad truth is that given the opportunity at a revote, they'd probably vote for Trump again because they're convinced Harris would've still been worse or as bad as Trump anyway," another user wrote. Sen. Bernie Sanders to visit Asheville on Aug. 10 as part of 'Fighting Oligarchy' Tour

ASHEVILLE – Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is planning to speak in downtown Asheville on Sunday, Aug. 10. Sanders' campaign committee announced the event July 30 as part of the longtime Independent senator's 'Fighting Oligarchy' tour. 'Over the course of the next few weeks, I'll be hitting the road to have real discussions across America on how we move forward to take on the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country,' Sanders' campaign site says. The event will be held in downtown Asheville at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium at Harrah's Cherokee Center. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the speaking event begins at 6 p.m., according to the announcement. Sanders previously visited Asheville in 2019 when he was running for the Democratic nomination for president. Sanders' most recent stops on the tour were in Texas, where he shared the stage with former Congressman Beto O'Rourke in June. He made other stops in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Montana, where Sanders, 83, appeared with New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to rail against the economic and political power of billionaire Elon Musk and Republican President Donald Trump. 'Taking on oligarchy is enormously difficult,' Sanders said at the April 16 event in Montana. 'These guys own the economy.' Want to attend? Protestor's 'Excellent' Question To Anti-Planned Parenthood Man Cheered: 'Well Done!'

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman is being applauded online for her "excellent" question during an anti-Planned Parenthood demonstration. On Reddit, the woman and original poster (OP), user BlondeOnBicycle, recounted an interaction that took place roughly a decade ago during an advocacy day at a state capitol. The OP had taken the day off from work to support an environmental cause, but found an anti-Planned Parenthood group that had set up for the same event. 'Makes me mad' "I have multiple friends who are alive today because of the health care, like cancer screenings, that Planned Parenthood provides, and have family in rural parts of the state who already have difficulty accessing basic health care," the OP wrote. "Trying to shut down all of PP because you disagree with part of it makes me mad." So, the OP decided to ask one of the group a question. Stock image of a sign at an abortion rights protest. "He only wanted to shut down Planned Parenthood to prevent abortions. "I asked him about the health care that they provide beyond just providing abortions, and he could not speak to that. "So I asked him, 'Sir, how far are you willing to drive to have your prostate examined? Because if you shut down Planned Parenthood, you're making it harder for people all over the state to get the basic health care that they need to stay alive, so I'm curious - how far are you willing to travel if you lost easy access to your basic health care services?' "He just about jumped away from me. If he's willing to talk about the reproductive parts of any human, clearly his own need to be fair game." Reddit Reacts Reddit users took to the comments to applaud the OP's actions, with one writing, "THAT is an excellent question! Well done!!" Another added, "This is actually a gem. Putting it on their health instead of random hypothetical 'others'. Honestly, using this!" "I am personally against abortions, but I don't believe in forcing my opinions on others," wrote one Redditor. "I do also believe that it is an individual right to choose. "That being said, Planned Parenthood clinics provide wonderful services beyond just that. I think that cutting those programs would create more problems than they prevent!" 'Planned Parenthood saves lives' In a message to Newsweek via Reddit, the OP explained, "The man I was talking to was extremely concerned about saving lives, and we spent a while talking about that. "In his case, the lives of the unborn. I am also concerned about saving lives—the lives of people I know and love." "Planned Parenthood saves lives, and defunding that work because you don't like some of the other work they do is cutting off your nose to spite your face." 'It's only fair' She continued, "I don't think he has ever made the connection between basic health care and the services he was trying to shut down, and he certainly wasn't expecting a woman to ask him about his own reproductive organs in the state house "But if he's going to protest about health care that mostly affects women, it's only fair to remind him that health care affects men—and him—as well!" The Right to Choose People on both sides of the argument have strong views on reproductive rights. In one Newsweek article, a Reddit user was urged to break up with her boyfriend after she realized he opposed abortion. According to her post, her boyfriend told her, "If you [abort a baby] just because you don't want a kid, then it's wrong. Like if you aborted my baby for no reason, I'd have to kill you, ya know?" In another incident covered by Newsweek, a Redditor was accused of "forcing" their brother and brother's girlfriend to undergo an abortion after they explained they wouldn't be able to live with the couple if they had their baby.
