Shahfiq, who died in 2024 accident, remembered in brother Syaz' Smooth's EP
Two of them are now part of his younger brother Syaz Smooth's debut EP, Bersamamu. The EP was released on May 2, which would have been Shahfiq's 28th birthday.
Syaz, who turns 20 in June, says: 'When I wanted to start singing, he was the first person to help me. He was my first vocal teacher, my pillar of support, and the one who told me that I should start writing my own songs.'
Shahfiq, whose full name was Mohammad Shahfiq Irman, came to fame in 2017 after winning the 10th season of Suria's reality singing competition Anugerah . After releasing singles such as Maya (2018), he studied music in Singapore's Lasalle College of the Arts and planned to become a vocal coach.
He was among a group of Singaporean motorcyclists who were hit by a lorry in Johor in March 2024. Shahfiq and Mohd Firman Nordin, 26, died at the scene, while four seriously injured riders were taken to a hospital in Muar. Shahfiq and his then fiancee were due to tie the knot in December 2024.

Syaz is also part of SUI, the home-grown vocal quartet that won Suria's reality singing competition Kaki Nyanyi in January.
Shahfiq's tragic and sudden death hit Syaz, who has two other older brothers and three older sisters, hard.
'He was always the first person I turned to when I needed advice. I trusted him with everything,' adds the singer.
The title track of Syaz's EP was written and composed by Shahfiq in 2020.
'He wrote it for me, and we had plans to record and release it,' Syaz, whose real name is Syah Riszuan, says of the orchestral-acoustic pop song.
'It was supposed to be a love song based on experiences that he went through. In my version, the way I tell the story, it's a personal tribute to him and the bond we shared.'
The other song in the EP written by Shahfiq is the bossa nova tune Ku Harap , which was part of his final-year project when he was in Lasalle. He also got Syaz to sing it at a Lasalle recital in 2019.
Syaz recalls: 'He was always trying out new music genres. It was very different from his other songs, but it kind of grew on me.'
Syaz penned and composed the remaining three songs on the EP. Berhenti Mengharap is about finally coming to terms with the loss of his sibling months after the accident took place.
'Sometimes, when I wake up, I would hope that I will see him again. But I have also accepted that he's no longer here, and I always pray that he's doing well up there.'
Another song, Baik Saja , is written like a letter to Shahfiq. 'I'm assuring him that everyone he knows is doing well, and that I will take care of them.'
When he was 16, Syaz Smooth was the youngest artist signed to music label Universal Music Singapore.
The EP opens with Doa Untuk Ibu , an R&B-tinged pop track which Syaz wrote for their mother to soothe her heart.
'It expresses deep gratitude and love for a mother's sacrifices and unwavering devotion to her family. When we lost Shahfiq, it affected her the most.'
Syaz developed a passion for music at the age of three. In 2017, he got his first big break when he reached the semi-finals of the second season of Asian reality variety series Asia's Got Talent (2015 to 2019).
Canadian music producer and hitmaker David Foster, one of the show's celebrity judges, had said then that he was impressed by Syaz's gift for singing.
In 2023, he graduated with a music production diploma from local private school The Songwriter Music College.
In 2022, at the age of 16, he joined Universal Music Singapore and was the music label's youngest signee. He left in 2024 so that he could chart his own path as an independent artiste.
His new EP is distributed by Malaysian music label Breaking Music.
Syaz, who recently enlisted for national service, says he will continue to write and record music during his free time and has plans to build up his audience beyond Singapore and the region.

Actress Eleanor Lee wins lawsuit against former assistant who doctored her audio recording
China-based Eleanor Lee has won a lawsuit against a former assistant who edited an audio recording which got the Singaporean actress into hot water with Chinese netizens. The 25-year-old daughter of Taiwan-born Singapore host Quan Yifeng was in the news in May for allegedly making derogatory comments about the people of China, which she denied. On May 21, a netizen claiming to be her former assistant posted an apology on Chinese social media platform Weibo and admitted to posting the edited recording. On July 29, Lee's agency wrote on Weibo that it had received the Chinese court's Certificate of Judgment Enforcement, and attached the document. 'Eleanor Lee has always loved and respected Chinese culture and stood firm in her position,' the agency wrote. 'We firmly defend her legal rights and urge everyone to refrain from believing or spreading rumours, to jointly resist false information and build a clean cyberspace.' The agency also shared a post from Yang Shuguang, a senior partner from Hai Run Law Firm, who shared a legal statement on the progress of the case. The statement said the court had issued a ruling on June 23, with the ruling taking effect on July 17. It also noted that the false content posted online by the former assistant had damaged Lee's reputation, causing her mental distress and affecting her business activities. 'The court ordered the defendant to run a statement of apology to Eleanor Lee on the defendant's Weibo account for 60 consecutive days, and to pay damages to her for mental stress, legal costs and other financial losses,' said the statement. It also said the legal firm has identified several social media accounts which maliciously fabricated and spread false information, and stated that it will continue to monitor these users. 'If the relevant network users still fail to promptly delete the infringing content they have posted after the release of this statement, or continue to commit the infringing acts, our lawyers will promptly collect additional evidence and file a lawsuit in court with the client's authorisation.' The furore began when a netizen claiming to be Lee's former assistant released a poor-quality audio recording that lasted about 30 seconds on Weibo in April. In the recording, which features much background noise and some muffled words, a woman is heard saying she is 'doing this not for fame, but for money' and that 'most people in China are idiots'. The incident gained traction after the media in China and Taiwan reported on it in May. Lee has not updated her social media accounts since posting a video clip on May 21, in which she gave her side of the story. There is no word if her role in the upcoming Chinese period drama, The Journey Of Legend, will be affected by the saga. #SHOWBIZ: Abid's 'Memori' reflects real-life bond with late father
DIRECTOR Abid Hussain will always remember the time he and his late father bonded best, during the final years of his life. And while his father is gone, his legacy of love remains in Abid's heart forever, and the director came up with tear-jerking family drama Memori, boasting a star-studded cast of A-list Malaysian stars. At the recent preview of Memori in GSC Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, Abid who is marking his first feature film, described Memori as a poignant tale of a strained relationship between a father and son, shaped by turbulent events of the past. He said: "It follows a son searching for a reason to forgive, and a father gradually losing his memory to Alzheimer's disease." Abid added that the movie which opens in cinemas on July 31 is set against the stunning backdrop of Kuala Terengganu, and 90 per cent based on his father's final days. "The protagonist Imran is based on me, while his father Dr Hassan is based on my father," said Abid, adding that unlike the setting of Memori, he bonded with his father in the Klang Valley. "The story begins when Imran and his wife Rina discover that Hassan's memory is fading. "He starts seeing people and things that don't exist, and when they take him to a doctor, the shocking truth is revealed - his memory is fading fast," said Abid. "Imran who has not had a good relationship with Hassan, is forced to spend quality time with his father, and recreate stories of his past in order to remind him of his family. "By constantly reminding Hassan, Imran creates in his father's mind short bursts of good memories that help improve their soured relationship, as well as that between Imran and his wife." Memori's cast is headlined by veteran actor Datuk Hilal Azman as Hassan, Singaporean Hisyam Hamid as Imran, Diana Danielle as Rina, Anas Ridzuan as their neighbour Mamat, and Aanantha Rajaram, Pushpa Narayan and Aajay Suresh as their family friends the Jega family. MARK Abid said that Memori had already made its mark across major film festivals globally. "It has been officially selected, nominated, and has won more than 20 awards, including Film of the Year, Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Editor, and Best Producer, among others," he said. "The film has been celebrated in festivals in Los Angeles, New York City, Mexico, China, Berlin, India, Tokyo, Singapore, and the Philippines." TERENGGANU Produced by Creative Stew Sdn Bhd in association with Golden Screen Cinemas, it has Abid's wife Zakiah Malek as executive producer. Filming took place around Kuala Terengganu in July last year. Zakiah said: "Memori is a story born from sorrow, love, and gratitude. "It explores how we carry emotional baggage from our past, often forgetting the limited time we have with those we cherish. "At its core, it's about the journey of letting go in order to find something we've longed for our entire lives." HEARTWARMING Hilal said that he thoroughly enjoyed working with Abid, Zakiah, Hisyam and Diana to bring Hassan's tragic but heartwarming story to life. "We've worked superbly as a team, and Abid is a gem of a director who knows exactly what he wants for every scene." Diana said that Memori was a powerful movie, full of emotion, and she could wholly relate to the characters. "It is a very Malaysian family story that deals with illness, and parent-child relationships which are topics close to my heart," she said, adding that she got along great with Hisyam and Hilal on the set. "I went straight into Memori out of love for its beautiful story, and my utmost respect for Abid and his father," she said, adding that she had known the director for some years. FIRST Abid said that it was his first film with Hilal, Hisyam and Diana and he had the three of them in mind when he created their characters. "Hisyam pushed himself to the limits. He cannot swim but braved himself to go into the water in the drowning scene," he said. Hisyam said: "My character Imran is a son who runs away from his problems and is somewhat selfish and insensitive. "Nevertheless, he loves his father Hassan dearly." BEACH Hisyam added that he liked having the movie set by the beach. "The sea is a metaphor for family love. It tied in beautifully with Imran's and Hassan's main bone of contention, a childhood incident when the father forced the son to swim by throwing him off the boat," he said, adding that he spent the longest time submerged in the water and was proud of his achievement. "Besides the scene where Imran gives his father a nice, warm shower, my favourite scene is the one where Imran and Rina get into an argument which reveals the persons that they are."
