Four dead as security forces, Druze fighters clash near Damascus: monitor

Roya News29-04-2025
A monitor of Syria's conflict said Tuesday that at least four Druze fighters were killed in overnight clashes with security forces after they stormed a Damascus suburb.
"Heavy clashes erupted in Jaramana after security forces and affiliated gunmen stormed" areas of the mostly Druze and Christian suburb, after "the circulation of an audio recording, attributed to a Druze citizen, containing religious insults", said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) monitor, adding that at least four Druze fighters were killed.
A Jaramana resident told AFP they heard gunfire and shelling during the clashes, which lasted around half an hour.
The Spiritual Council of the Druze Muslim community in Jaramana strongly condemned a recent audio recording circulating online that allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad, calling it "fabricated" and part of a broader plot to incite sectarian strife and destabilize social peace.
In an official statement, the council also denounced the armed attack that targeted the city, noting that most of those injured or killed were local residents and members of the General Security Directorate.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to unity and rejected all forms of incitement and division, urging authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and hold all those involved accountable to preserve civil peace and the city's security.
Separately, Syria's Ministry of Interior said it has been closely following the viral audio recording that contains offensive remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.
In a statement, the ministry said relevant authorities launched a comprehensive investigation, and preliminary findings indicate that the individual accused has not yet been conclusively linked to the recording.
The ministry affirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify the speaker and bring them to justice in accordance with national laws.
It also expressed appreciation to citizens for their sincere emotions and religious devotion, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order and avoiding any individual or collective actions that could compromise public safety or property.

VIDEO: Turkey arrests three cartoonists over Prophet Muhammad drawing

Turkish authorities detained three cartoonists on Monday in connection with a satirical cartoon published in the weekly magazine Leman, which appeared to depict Prophet Moses and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) shaking hands in the sky as missiles rained down below in a war-like setting. The cartoon sparked swift backlash from government officials and religious groups. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya posted a video on the social media platform X, showing cartoonist Doğan Pehlevan being detained by police and dragged up a staircase with his hands cuffed behind his back. — Ali Yerlikaya (@AliYerlikaya) June 30, 2025 "I once again curse those who try to sow discord by drawing caricatures of our Prophet Muhammad," Yerlikaya wrote. "The individual who drew this vile image, D.P., has been apprehended and taken into custody. These shameless people will be held accountable before the law." Yerlikaya later shared additional footage showing police raiding homes and detaining two other men, one of whom was barefoot as he was dragged into a police van. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç confirmed that six individuals were under investigation under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code, which prohibits inciting hatred and enmity. Detention orders have been issued for all six. In a statement posted on X, Leman apologized to any readers who felt offended and argued that the cartoon was misinterpreted. The magazine explained that Pehlevan's drawing was meant to portray "the suffering of a Muslim man killed in Israeli attacks" and was not intended to insult Islam or the Prophet Muhammad. "The name Muhammad is one of the most common in the Muslim world, used out of reverence for the Prophet," the statement read. "The cartoon does not depict the Prophet himself and was never intended to mock religious beliefs." The magazine accused critics of willfully distorting its message and called on the judiciary to investigate what it described as a coordinated smear campaign. Eserde Hz Muhammed'e hiçbir — LeMan (@lemandergisi) June 30, 2025 Later that evening, video clips on social media showed protesters gathered outside Leman 's Istanbul offices, chanting and kicking the entrance doors in anger.

'To rid Israel of evil': Man crucifies pastor in Arizona citing divine mission

Adam Christopher Sheafe, 51, has confessed to the murder of New River pastor Bill Schonemann, revealing a disturbing plot to "execute" and "crucify" at least 14 Christian leaders across 10 states in what he called "Operation First Commandment". Sheafe, who showed no remorse, stated his actions were part of a "divine mission" to "rid Israel of evil" and punish pastors he believed were misleading their followers. Pastor Schonemann, 76, a beloved figure at New River Bible Chapel, was found dead in his home on April 28. Sheafe was apprehended on April 30 in Sedona. In a jailhouse interview on June 24, Sheafe admitted to the killing, explaining his motive stemmed from a belief that Christian pastors preach a false doctrine regarding Jesus and the Trinity. He confessed to placing a crown of thorns, made from desert trees, on Pastor Schonemann's head after the killing, a symbolic act to signify the pastor's preaching was contrary to his beliefs. Pastor Schonemann was found dead in his bed, not physically crucified. Sheafe's "Operation First Commandment" targeted 14 pastors and priests, starting and ending in Arizona. His alleged hit list included cities in Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas. He claimed he was about to kill two priests in Sedona before his arrest. The New River community is mourning Pastor Schonemann, remembered for his kindness and willingness to help. His family expressed alarm over Sheafe "enjoying the attention" and his continued public messaging from jail, viewing it as a "very serious threat". Sheafe has not yet been formally charged with Pastor Schonemann's murder but is currently held in Coconino County Jail on unrelated burglary charges, including two burglaries in Sedona, unlawful flight, aggravated assault, and theft of a stolen vehicle. His criminal history includes a 2013 domestic violence arrest and federal prison time for bank fraud and identity theft. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is working to prepare formal murder charges.
