
Dubai self-driving taxis to launch in 2026
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its global partnerships with leading autonomous driving technology providers to deploy autonomous taxis in Dubai .
The collaboration includes a strategic partnership with Uber Technologies and WeRide, who will launch AVs in Dubai through the Uber platform.

Alongside China's Baidu, through its autonomous mobility arm, Apollo Go—one of the world's foremost providers of self-driving solutions and autonomous ride hailing services.
This initiative forms part of RTA's broader strategy to establish Dubai as a global pioneer in autonomous mobility and support its vision to become the smartest city and the best place to live and work worldwide.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said: 'These two partnerships with Uber, starting with WeRide as the technology partner and Baidu (Apollo Go) represent a crucial step in advancing Dubai's Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to transform 25 per cent of all journeys in the city into autonomous trips across various transport modes by 2030.
'These collaborations highlight RTA's commitment to engaging with global technology leaders and forms part of a series of autonomous mobility trials launched in 2016, which have grown in diversity over the past years.'
Al Tayer expressed his satisfaction with both companies selecting Dubai as the international hub for expanding their autonomous operations beyond their home markets.
He said: 'The deployment of autonomous taxis will support the integration of transport systems by enhancing first and last-mile connectivity for public transport users. This aligns with the First and Last-Mile Strategy adopted by RTA last year, which aims to facilitate passenger movement between their point of origin or destination and the nearest public transport station.
'Autonomous vehicles also contribute to improved road safety, as human error is responsible for over 90 per cent of traffic accidents. Moreover, they serve a wide segment of the community—particularly senior citizens, residents, and people of determination.
'Uber, starting with WeRide, and Baidu through Apollo Go will commence trials of autonomous taxis in Dubai this year, with a safety driver seated behind the wheel, in preparation for the driverless commercial launch in 2026.
'The broader rollout of autonomous vehicles will mark a transformative shift in Dubai's transport landscape and further strengthen RTA's efforts to enhance network integration by facilitating smoother mobility for public transport users.'

To date, Apollo Go has recorded more than 150 million kilometres of safe autonomous driving, supporting the large-scale deployment of autonomous ride-hailing services across more than 10 Chinese cities.
Since this February, Apollo Go has commenced fully driverless operations across China, and has completed more than 10 million autonomous rides lately, making it the world's largest operator of driverless fleets.

Dubai: RTA to auction 350 exclusive 2, 3, 4, and 5-digit number plates
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to offer 350 distinctive two, three, four, and five-digit vehicle number plates in its 80th online auction for private and classic vehicles. The auction will feature plates from the following codes: H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z — including Classic. Registration opens on Monday, August 4, while the auction will go live on August 11, and will run for five days. All sales are subject to a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT), and participants must hold a valid traffic file in the Emirate of Dubai. To participate, bidders are required to submit a security cheque payable to RTA in the amount of Dh5,000, along with a non-refundable participation fee of Dh120. Payments can be made at Customer Happiness Centres in Umm Ramool, Al Barsha, and Deira, or via credit card through the RTA website: Successful bidders must complete payment within 10 working days from the closing date of the auction. Payments may be made at authorised service provider centres — by cash for amounts up to Dh50,000, and by certified cheque or credit card for amounts exceeding Dh50,000. Transactions can also be completed at Customer Happiness Centres or via the RTA website.

Dubai's DEWA processes 7.2 million digital transactions in first half of 2025
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has processed more than 7.2 million transactions across its digital platforms during the first half of 2025, achieving a digital service adoption rate of 99.5 per cent. The transactions were distributed across multiple channels: 1.1 million through the DEWA website, 2.6 million via the smart app, and 3.5 million through partner-supported platforms. 395 million used public transport in 6 months
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that public transport modes — including Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, and marine transport — along with taxis and shared mobility options such as app-based vehicles, hourly rentals, and on-demand buses, served approximately 395.3 million riders in the first half of 2025. This represents a 9% increase compared to around 361.2 million riders during the same period in 2024. Average daily ridership reached nearly 2.18 million, up from approximately 1.98 million in the first half of 2024. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said: 'The continued growth in public transport ridership reflects users' confidence in the system's efficiency and the quality of services provided across all modes. We remain committed to delivering safe, comfortable, and sustainable mobility solutions for every segment of society.' He added: 'Dubai's public transport network has undergone a major transformation, driven by advanced infrastructure and a diverse range of transit options that now form the backbone of mobility for residents and visitors across the emirate. As a result, the share of journeys using public transport and shared mobility has increased from 6% in 2006 to 21.6% in 2024.' 'We are moving forward with a clear vision to make public transport the preferred choice for daily commuting by smartly expanding transport lines and networks, strengthening connectivity between stations and key destinations, and offering flexible, inclusive mobility solutions,' Al Tayer revealed. 'The Construction of Dubai Metro Blue Line is currently underway. Spanning 30 kilometres and comprising 14 stations, the line will serve nine key districts with a combined estimated population of one million residents, in alignment with the Dubai 2040 Urban Plan.' Al Tayer continued: 'Earlier, RTA signed four agreements to procure 637 multi-sized buses compliant with the European low-emission standard 'Euro 6,' including 40 electric buses — the largest and first fleet of its kind in the UAE. The buses will be delivered in 2025 and 2026 and will support the geographic expansion of the public bus network across the emirate. They also align with our strategic objective to convert the entire public bus fleet to electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2050. This month, we completed the development of 16 bus passenger stations and six depots, as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of services provided to all users.' Al Tayer explained that Dubai Metro and taxis recorded the highest share of ridership in the first half of this year, with the Metro accounting for 36.5% and taxis for 26%. Public buses made up 24% of the total. He noted that May registered the highest monthly ridership, reaching 68.8 million, while figures for the other months ranged between 61 and 68 million. 'There was a 9% increase in ridership during the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2024, a key indicator of the recovery in economic activity across the emirate of Dubai, as well as the effectiveness of the RTA's strategies and initiatives to encourage both residents and visitors to use public transport and to offer diverse mobility options throughout the city,' he said. 'Dubai's public transport network, with all components operating in full integration, serves as the backbone of mobility across the emirate. It has succeeded in fostering a positive shift in public attitudes toward mass transit across all segments of society,' he added. The number of Dubai Metro users across both the Red and Green Lines reached approximately 143.9 million riders during the first half of 2025. BurJuman and Al Rigga stations recorded the highest ridership volumes, with BurJuman Station (serving both the Red and Green Lines) registering 8.6 million riders, followed by Al Rigga Station with 6.8 million.
