Aviation regulator DGCA starts audit at Air Indias main base in Gurugram
The Tata Group-owned airline has come under intense scrutiny after its London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane crashed soon after take-off in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 270 people, including 241 people onboard.
An eight-member team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started the annual audit of Air India's main base. Generally, a three-member team carries out the yearly audit, the source said.
"DGCA has started the audit at Air India's main base at Gurugram. The annual exercise will cover all aspects, including operations, flight planning, scheduling, rostering and IOCC (Integrated Operations Control Centre)," the source said.
Air India is headquartered in Gurugam, Haryana.
The audit exercise also comes at a time when the regulator has taken action against some Air India officials for repeated safety lapses.
On June 21, DGCA sought details on the airline's planned and unplanned inspections, audit, cockpit/en route, station facility, ramp and cabin inspection, among others, from its flight operations inspectors since 2024.
The communication was sent out a day after the regulator issued a show-cause notice to the airline for Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) violation and also ordered the removal of the airline's three senior officials from their respective roles for certain lapses.
Meanwhile, DGCA has also put in place a new framework for comprehensive special audits to generate a 360-degree evaluation of the aviation ecosystem, reflecting both its strengths and areas needing improvement.
These special audits will be over and above the regulatory audits carried out as per the Annual Surveillance Programme.

By Shafali Nigam New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): India's civil aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday issued an urgent directive mandating Indian operators of specific Boeing aircraft models to conduct inspections of the engine fuel control switch locking mechanisms by July 21. The move comes days after report of preliminary investigation into the crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad in which killed 260 people. The directive enforces compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA)'s Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) NM-18-33, issued in December 2018, which warned of the potential disengagement of the fuel control switch locking feature in operators of Model 737 airplanes Boeing aircraft, as mentioned in AI 171 preliminary report. The fuel control switch design, including the locking feature, is similar on various Boeing airplane models including part number 4TL837-3D which is fitted in B787-8 aircraft VT-ANB, the preliminary report added. The fuel control switch design--including the locking feature--is shared across several Boeing aircraft families, including the 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and 787, the report said. AAIB's findings reignited concern over why many airlines had delayed or skipped the inspections, even after the issue had been flagged internationally. The order mandates all affected operators to complete inspections in line with the FAA's SAIB NM-18-33 and submit their inspection plans and final compliance reports to both the DGCA and relevant regional offices. The DGCA noted in its directive that several international and domestic operators had voluntarily begun compliance following the FAA bulletin. The order explicitly refers to India's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) M-M.A. 301, which obligates operators to comply with safety directives from aircraft manufacturers or regulators of the aircraft's state of design, in this case, the U.S. FAA. 'Strict adherence is essential for continued airworthiness and safety of operations,' the DGCA stated. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released the preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The crash killed 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Flight data recovered from the aircraft's Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) revealed that the fuel cutoff switches for both engines were inadvertently moved from RUN to CUTOFF, one after another within a 1-second interval, at an altitude just moments after liftoff. One pilot was heard asking the other, 'Why did you cut off?' to which the response was, 'I did not.' This uncommanded shutdown triggered the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), and the aircraft began losing altitude almost immediately, unable to sustain powered flight. According to the AAIB, the pilots re-engaged the fuel switches in an attempt to relight both engines. Engine 1 showed signs of recovering thrust, but Engine 2 failed to stabilise. The aircraft, which had briefly reached a speed of 180 knots, was already descending and failed to regain altitude. The final distress call -- a 'MAYDAY' -- was transmitted at 08:09 UTC, just seconds before the aircraft crashed into residential buildings outside the airport perimeter. (ANI)

Dubai [UAE], July 14 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, currently on an official visit to the UAE as part of the MP Global Dialogue 2025, held a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening industrial cooperation and attracting global investment to the state. During a meeting with representatives of the Tata Group in Dubai, Yadav discussed avenues for investment across sectors including IT, renewable energy, automobile, and infrastructure. He highlighted Madhya Pradesh's investor-friendly policies and fast-track approval process, encouraging greater participation from global investors. In a separate engagement, the Chief Minister met with Sunil Manjrekar, President of the Global Maharashtrian Business Forum (GMBF). The discussion focused on promoting foreign investment in Madhya Pradesh, boosting exports, and integrating into global value chains. Initial probe finds no issues with crashed Boeing 787: Air India CEO

The report does not establish who moved the switches or why. According to the cockpit voice recording cited in the report, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel supply. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so," said the report. There was no abnormality in the aircraft's take-off roll, no issue with fuel quality and all the required maintenance tasks had been completed, Wilson said. The pilots had passed their mandatory pre-flight breathalyser checks and there were no observations regarding their medical condition, he said. Live Events He said every 787 in Air India's fleet was inspected "within days of the accident", with oversight from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. "All were found fit for service," Wilson said, adding that further checks are being carried out as needed. "We continue to perform all necessary checks, as we will any new ones that authorities may suggest." He said the release of the preliminary report had triggered renewed speculation in the media. "Over the past 30 days, we've seen an ongoing cycle of theories, allegations, rumours and sensational headlines, many of which have later been disproven," he said. Wilson said the AAIB report had provided "greater clarity" on some aspects of the event, but also raised new questions. He reiterated that the airline would continue cooperating with investigators to support a full and thorough inquiry. He also addressed employees directly, adding that the period since the accident has been difficult, and that the focus must remain on supporting those affected and maintaining operational reliability. "Let us not be diverted from what are our top priorities: standing by the bereaved and those injured, working together as a team, and delivering a safe and reliable air travel experience," he wrote. Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off on June 12, killing some 275 people, including 241 passengers and crew. A final report from the AAIB is still pending.
