Free sand to beneficiaries to build Indiramma homes: Telangana housing minister

Time of India12-06-2025
HYDERABAD
: The Congress govt will supply sand free of cost for construction of
Indiramma houses
to the scheme beneficiaries, revenue and housing minister
Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy
announced at a programme in Mulugu district where he distributed approval letters of Indiramma houses.
Ponguleti directed all the collectors to ensure that sand stockpiles are kept ready and supplied free of cost to beneficiaries. Sources said the govt was also in talks with steel and cement companies for supplying them at a subsidised rate.
He said that if beneficiaries begin construction within the next 10–15 days, funds will be released to them every Monday. Forest officials will be instructed to allow people living in makeshift homes within forest areas to construct Indiramma houses at the same locations, he said. Over 9,800 Chenchus were sanctioned Indiramma houses, which, he said, was a historic decision of the Congress govt.
"In addition to 3,500 Indiramma houses for Mulugu constituency at the rate of 3,500 for each of the 119 assembly constituencies in the state, an additional 1,500 units were sanctioned in the Integrated Tribal Development Agency limits," he said.
Responding to minister D Anasuya Seethakka's request, Ponguleti sanctioned another 1,000 Indiramma houses to the Mulugu and ITDA areas in the constituency.
Stating that the incumbent 'Indiramma govt' was synonymous with Indiramma housing, Ponguleti said 25.5 lakh such houses were sanctioned to the poor by the previous Congress govt of the combined AP state in the
Telangana
region alone.
"After the formation of Telangana state, the previous BRS govt, which held power for two terms, sanctioned only 92,000 houses and completed 60,000 of them. Nearly 30,000 houses were left incomplete with only walls standing. The contractors were not paid for their work by the previous regime," he alleged.
The minister said there were at least 60 eligible beneficiaries in every village, but currently only about 30 houses per village can be sanctioned. However, he assured that all eligible families will be provided houses in a phased manner in future.
"The target of the Congress govt is to construct 20 lakh Indiramma houses with a budget of Rs 22,500 crore over the next four years," Ponguleti said and appealed to the people to observe the welfare schemes being implemented by the Congress govt and support it in the upcoming local body elections.
On the issue of Bhu Bharathi (land records), Ponguleti pointed out that during the previous govt farmers had to run from pillar to post for resolution of land issues. Now, revenue officials were proactively reaching out to the people to resolve their problems, he said.

Congress, AAP politicising sensitive issue of sacrilege, says Akali Dal

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday asserted both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab are politicising the sensitive issue of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib for their political ambitions even as it asked Leader of Opposition Partap Bajwa to tell why the previous Congress government did nothing to either probe or punish the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime. Reacting to Bajwa's statement in the Vidhan Sabha in which the former claimed that the AAP government had failed to charge sheet both former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was the Home Minister, in the cases of sacrilege of 2015, Akali Dal Vice-President Parambans Romana condemned Bajwa for showing double standards on this sensitive issue. Reminding Bajwa that he had held protests along with Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and demanded the sacrilege case be transferred to the CBI in a memorandum to the President, Romana said, 'Bajwa, however, changed colours once the Congress formed the government in the state in 2017.' He said Bajwa remained a mute spectator when the Congress government got the sacrilege cases transferred back to the state from the CBI and did not conduct any investigation on the basis of law or facts. The SAD leader said like the AAP government now, the Congress government also held special sessions of the Vidhan Sabha with the sole purpose of doing politics on this issue. Speaking about the party's stand, Romana said that then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had transferred the sacrilege cases to the CBI in the interest of justice. He said the conduct of both Congress and AAP governments revealed that they did not want any justice in the sacrilege cases. He also exposed Bajwa for praising AAP suspended legislator Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh. 'It is a matter of record that the Punjab and Haryana High Court snubbed the investigation carried out by Kunwar Vijay in his role as a police officer and held that it was a dangerous cocktail of politics, religion and police administration.' He said following this observation, Kunwar Vijay quit the police force and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Akali leader also asserted that the Congress was least qualified to speak on the issue of sacrilege. 'This is the party which attacked Sri Darbar Sahib with tanks and mortars and destroyed Sri Akal Takht Sahib.' He said the Congress was also responsible for the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in Delhi and other parts of the country. Romana said similarly, AAP legislator Naresh Yadav had been convicted for being responsible for the sacrilege of the holy Quran in Malerkotla. He said instead of showing Yadav the door, AAP had rewarded him with a party ticket in the recent Vidhan Sabha elections. 'The AAP government in Punjab has also done nothing to punish the sacrilege perpetrators and has been busy politicising this issue,' he added. After three hours of intense debate on allegations and counter-allegations, the Vidhan Sabha unanimously decided to refer the highly emotive Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill of 2025 to a select committee for consultation with all stakeholders. On the suggestion of both the treasury and the opposition benches, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan said the select committee would gather public opinion on the Bill and return with recommendations within six months. Earlier, the Chief Minister proposed a four-month timeline. The Bill proposes stringent penalties for sacrilege-related offences, prescribing a minimum sentence of 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment, along with fines ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The holy scriptures referred to in the Bill are Guru Granth Sahib or extracts thereof, the Bhagavad Gita, the Quran and the Bible.

Rahul Gandhi Attacks Jaishankar Over Xi Jinping Meeting, Calls Foreign Policy A "Circus"

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a scathing attack on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, accusing the minister of conducting a "full-blown circus" that undermines India's foreign policy interests. Gandhi's sharp criticism came in response to Jaishankar's diplomatic engagement with the Chinese leader, with the Congress MP expressing strong disapproval of the interaction. In his pointed remarks, Gandhi suggested that the External Affairs Minister's approach was fundamentally flawed and detrimental to India's international standing. The Congress party has seized upon the meeting to highlight what they perceive as inconsistencies in the government's China policy, particularly drawing attention to China's historical support for Pakistan during sensitive operations. Party leaders specifically referenced China's backing of Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, using this as evidence of Beijing's unreliable partnership with India. Gandhi's tweet reflected his frustration with what he views as misguided diplomatic priorities, suggesting that the Chinese foreign minister would likely brief Prime Minister Modi about recent developments in China-India relations. He characterized Jaishankar's diplomatic efforts as a destructive spectacle that was actively harming India's foreign policy objectives. The Congress party's broader criticism centers on the timing and nature of high-level diplomatic engagement with China, given the complex history of bilateral relations between the two nations. Party members have questioned the wisdom of such meetings when China continues to maintain strategic partnerships with Pakistan, particularly in contexts that could be viewed as contrary to Indian interests. The attack on Jaishankar represents part of the opposition's ongoing critique of the government's foreign policy approach, with Congress leaders arguing that the current diplomatic strategy lacks coherence and fails to adequately protect India's strategic interests. They contend that engaging with Chinese leadership without addressing fundamental issues in the bilateral relationship sends mixed signals about India's position. Gandhi's characterization of the situation as a "circus" suggests his belief that the government's diplomatic efforts are more theatrical than substantive, lacking the serious strategic thinking required for effective international relations. This criticism reflects broader opposition concerns about the government's ability to navigate complex geopolitical relationships effectively. The Congress party's focus on China's support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor serves to remind the public of the historical context that complicates India-China relations. By highlighting this issue, the opposition aims to demonstrate what they see as the contradictions in engaging diplomatically with a nation that has previously acted against Indian interests. The political sparring over foreign policy reflects deeper disagreements about how India should approach its relationship with China, particularly in light of ongoing border tensions and strategic competition in the region. The opposition's criticism suggests they favor a more confrontational approach rather than diplomatic engagement with Beijing. This latest exchange between Gandhi and the government over China policy illustrates the polarized nature of foreign policy debates in Indian politics, where diplomatic initiatives often become subjects of intense political controversy and partisan criticism.
