In his first year as head coach of the Ely boys' program, McNabb led his team to a 20-9 record and the Class 5A state championship, the school's ninth boys' state title and first since 2019. He also won girls' state titles with Ely in 2020 and North Lauderdale Somerset Prep in 2018 and 2019.
McNabb, who was selected as the Class 5A Coach of the Year in a previous round of voting, finished with nine first-place votes and 121 points to win the overall award ahead of Class 7A Coach of the Year Mark Griseck of Windermere (71) and Class 6A Coach of the Year Julius Sandi of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (66).
Class 4A COY Edward Schuler of Fort Lauderdale Stranahan finished fourth (48) followed by Rural Class COY Greg Bowie of Hawthorne (45), Class 3A COY Colt McDowell of The Villages (31), Class 2A COY Anthony Shahbaz of Miami Riviera Prep (29) and Class 1A COY David Roe of Weston Sagemont (12).
For the state's overall girls' basketball coach of the year, the state's Class 2A Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year Ochiel Swaby of Miami Country Day finished seventh in the final voting.
Florida's Class 6A Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year Joel Bower of Bloomingdale won the state's overall girls' basketball coaching award. He led his squad to a 25-5 record and the Class 6A state title, the program's first state championship. This year's title-run followed a 30-1 record in 2024, with the only loss coming in the school's first state championship game appearance.
Cameron Boozer
Cameron Boozer, a senior from Miami Christopher Columbus, is the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers State Mr. Basketball in a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school basketball coaches and media representatives.
The 6-9 forward, who also was named Mr. Basketball in 2023 and 2024, became the first unanimous choice in the 43rd year history of the award and joined Joel Berry II of Lake Highland Prep (2012-14) as the only other three-time winner of the state's top boys' basketball honor.
The McDonald's All-American led his Columbus squad to a record-setting fourth straight Class 7A state title, averaging 22.6 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
He has signed to play college basketball at NCAA Division I Duke University, where his twin brother, Cayden, will join him. Their father Carlos is an NBA alum who also played college ball at Duke. Carlos is a men's college basketball analyst for the ACC Network.
Cameron, who earlier was named the Class 7A Player of the Year, tallied all 19 first-place votes and 190 points to finish ahead of Class 3A Player of the Year Shon Abaev of Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian Academy, who had 11 second-place votes and totalled 97 points.
Class 2A Player of the Year Alex Lloyd of Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy finished third (81), followed by Class 6A POY Dwayne Wimbley of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (37), Class 1A POY Matt Able of Weston Sagemont (24), Class 4A POY Josh Lewis of Blake (11), Class 5A POY Dylon Hanna of Blanche Ely (7) and Rural Class POY De'Andre Harvey of Williston (4).
For the state's overall Miss Basketball honors, the state's Class 2A Girls' Basketball Player of the Year Markeli Jones-Tynes of Westminster Academy was eighth in the final voting.
The state's Class 4A Player of the Year Jaida Civil from Palm Bay also won the Miss Basketball award. The McDonald's All-American senior guard, who has signed to play hoops at the University of Tennessee, averaged 18.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 3.3 steals per game.
Mya Bethel
North Miami senior Mya Bethel is the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers State Miss Wrestling.
Bethel completed an amazing four-year high school wrestling career as she went undefeated in 104 matches, capped off by winning her fourth consecutive state championship. Her senior season she was 22-0 and won state at 155 pounds.
Bethel is Florida's first four-time girls' state wrestling champion since the state championship tournament was sanctioned by the FHSSA in 2022.
David Bossardet of Flagler Palm Coast was named the state's Girls' Wrestling Coach of the Year after leading his squad to the state title with a state-record 150 points.
Water polo
Districts begin next week, and Miami Gulliver Prep is ready.
Gulliver Prep girls improved to 21-1 with an impressive 15-1 victory over Mater Lakes Academy.
Freshman Sofia Beltran led the Raiders with 7 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal. Sophomore Isabella Ten Have had 3 goals, 4 steals and 3 assists, and freshman Emma Preston added 1 goal, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Senior captain Julia Fogel had 2 assists and 2 steals.
Gulliver Prep opens the postseason against visiting Weston Cypress Bay at 4 p.m. on April 8.
Miami Ransom Everglades and Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy are each 14-7. Cooper City is 15-5, and Miami Mourning is 11-5.
On the boys' side, Miami Mater Lakes Academy is 18-2, after beating Gulliver Prep 13-10.
Prior, Westminster Academy defeated Mater Lakes Academy 15-11. The Lions, who also beat Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 13-12 in overtime, are 16-2 overall. The Raiders are 15-6.
Ransom Everglades is 14-7, and Miami Belen Jesuit is 15-6. Cooper City is 14-4.

In boys' volleyball, North Miami is 10-0, and Miami Doral Reagan is 12-1. Miami Columbus is 15-2, and Miami Southwest is 10-3. Miami Colonial Christian is 7-1, and Coconut Creek Monarch is 7-2. Andrean's Kaden Maxwell decides to ‘stay in the lab.' Playing in Senior Future Games is part of his formula.
Two days after winning the Class 3A state title in June, Andrean's Kaden Maxwell was on his way to Georgia. A baseball tournament awaited him. 'If you want to get better, you can't take any days off,' he said. 'You have to stay in the lab, keep working out and keep throwing. 'Every time you take a day off, you take two steps back, and that's going to mess up your progression.' Maxwell's busy schedule continues in the coming week, when he'll return to Georgia to play in Prep Baseball's invitation-only Senior Future Games. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Maxwell, who will be a senior, isn't the only player from Northwest Indiana hoping to catch the eyes of college coaches at the event, which includes games Tuesday and Wednesday. Chesterton pitcher Troy Barrett and Illiana Christian pitcher Tanner Post will join him. 'I'm just going down there to show what I've got and hopefully get seen by some schools,' Maxwell said. Maxwell, a pitcher and first baseman, was a two-way standout for Andrean during his junior season. He hit .380 with 31 RBIs and went 4-1 with 1.50 ERA in 26 1/3 innings. Andrean coach Dave Pishkur said he believes Maxwell could be just as effective in dual roles in college too. 'I'm curious to see what all of these DI schools are looking for out of him because I think he's a potential two-way player,' Pishkur said. 'He's had some batting practices where he's put on a show, and I've always said that I thought he had the best stuff on our team this year, which is saying a lot on a team that had some really good arms.' Maxwell said he has already been in touch with multiple Big Ten coaches. 'It's a stressful process, and it's definitely coming fast,' he said. 'But you just have to realize what your value is and how good of a player you are. I think that's the case for a lot of people. They don't think they're good enough, but then they start getting recruited.' To keep sharp when he doesn't have a game, Maxwell practices with Andrean shortstop Jet Dutton, who will also be a senior. 'He's always working to become a better player,' Dutton said. 'Especially in these last few years, we're always going out to hit with each other, always doing something to keep improving.' Facing Maxwell, Dutton has learned how difficult it can be to hit against him. 'He has a high spin rate on his curveball and his slider, and they move a lot,' Dutton said. 'It's hard to hit a ball when it's moving like that.' Maxwell intends to keep moving. In the fall, he'll play for the Chicago Cubs Scout Team, another high-level program that competes in tournaments all over the country. Its alumni list includes 2025 Lake Central graduate Joshua Flores, who was picked in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. 'I've been competing against some really good teams recently, and I've talked with a lot of coaches who've been communicating that they like what they see,' Maxwell said. 'Hopefully I've got a good future here.'

Columbus basketball star Cameron Boozer named Gatorade Best Male Player of the Year
Recently graduated Columbus basketball superstar Cameron Boozer was named the Gatorade Best Male Player of the Year. Boozer, a two-time Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year, is headed to Duke University this fall after a stellar prep career during which he became a McDonald's All-American and led the Explorers to four consecutive state championships and a national title his senior season. Boozer was honored, along with Best Female Player of the Year award winner Jane Hedengren, a BYU track and field commit from Utah, at this week's ESPY Awards. The pair were presented their awards for the nation's top high school sports honor by former two-time Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Player of the Year Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and 2005-06 Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
