'This was a heartbreaking accident, but one that was preventable,' Sheriff Mike Roberson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. 'Alcohol was a factor, and the decision to operate a boat while impaired had devastating consequences. We urge everyone to think twice before mixing alcohol with watercraft operation. It only takes a moment for lives to be changed forever.'
He continued, adding, 'We ask the public to keep the families and loved ones of those involved in your thoughts and prayers. We are also grateful to the deputies, first responders, and medical professionals who responded swiftly and courageously in an incredibly difficult situation.'
Jennifer's sister-in-law Kristie also released a statement to WRAL News.
"Please keep both families in your thoughts and prayers for strength as they try to cope and heal from this terrible tragedy, one that should've never happened,' she said. 'My family and friend did everything right, but because of a series of reckless and selfish decisions, both families are now left traumatized and forever changed.'
She added, 'This is a heartbreaking reminder that every choice we make can deeply affect the lives of others.'
'Please think before you act. Your decision, no matter how small they seem, can have life-altering consequences for good, loving, hardworking, Christian people who deserve peace, not pain,' Kirstie concluded.
A GoFundMe page created to help with Jennifer's medical costs has so far raised $13,094 out of a $35,000 goal.
'On August 2, 2025, tragedy struck when Jennifer Stehle, a wife, mother, and WCPSS school social worker, became one of the victims in a devastating accident at Harris Lake,' the description read. 'She sustained severe injuries and now faces a long and challenging road to recovery.'
They added, 'As Jennifer begins this difficult journey, her family—especially her husband, Justin—is doing everything they can to support her, but they need our help. The emotional and financial burden is immense, and any support will make a significant difference in her recovery process.'
Many boaters on Harris Lake expressed their thoughts following the tragic incident.
'Drinking and driving in a car is totally unacceptable but drinking on a boat is a totally different level,' boater Craig Schnier told CBS 17. 'Absolutely absurd it's hard to believe somebody can do something of that nature, boating is supposed to be fun, it's supposed to be about being with family and friends. It's just horrible to hear."
'You just have to make sure that you're always looking out — it doesn't matter what other people are doing — just make sure that you can see, especially if there's people wakeboarding or doing something else in the water,' boater Mark Macchioni added.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Knight is due in court on Sept. 22, per WRAL News.
PEOPLE contacted the Moncure Fire Department for comment.

Kyiv buries soldier's wife and daughters killed in Russian attack

Men in military uniform shouldered the three white coffins out of a schoolyard in Kyiv on Tuesday, carrying a Ukrainian mother and her two children killed by the Russians to be buried. Residents held each other and wept as they bid a final farewell to their neighbours, who died at dawn on Friday, when a barrage of Russian drones and missiles pounded the Ukrainian capital for hours. Across a leafy park next to the school, flowers, toys, and portraits of those killed were laid beneath the remains of a nine-storey residential building gutted in the attack, which killed at least 31 people. "It is difficult to imagine the grief of our brother, who lost two little daughters and his beloved wife in an instant," said the military unit of Igor Gumeniuk, the serviceman whose family was buried. Local media reported that Irina and her children Anastassia, 13, and Alina, 10, had fled the fighting in the eastern Donetsk region -- where Russia has concentrated its firepower -- before settling in Kyiv. "Alina and Nastya were sincere, kind and bright girls. We will remember their smiles, their kind hearts, their desire to live and learn," the girls' school that held the ceremony wrote on Facebook. One of Irina's final social media posts from last month showed the family meeting in eastern Ukraine with Igor, an active serviceman. "We were happy together all day for the first time in eight months," she wrote on Facebook, alongside pictures of the family relaxing by a river. Russia has stepped up its long-range drone and missile attacks on Ukraine over recent months as US-led efforts to end the more than three-year invasion appear to stall. Thirty-nine-year-old doctor Roman Moskalenko, whose body was found beneath the rubble in Kyiv, also received a farewell from his fellow medics. "His colleagues remember him as attentive, caring, and professional," Kyiv's Vechirniy media outlet reported. A day earlier, six-year-old boy Matviy Marchenko was buried outside the capital in his father's native village, according to local media. bur-jbr/asy/sbk

Michigan teenager drowns in Lake Michigan's Sturgeon Bay

A teenager died as a result of a drowning Sunday at Sturgeon Bay Beach in Northern Lower Michigan. The victim was a 14-year-old from Alanson, which is about 30 miles away, the Emmet County Sheriff's Office said in its report. "Our hearts are broken for the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time," Sheriff Matt Leirstein said in his statement. First responders got a distress call about 5:41 p.m. Sunday of two teenage boys who were struggling to stay afloat in the water. A bystander had stepped in and managed to rescue one of them. "Unfortunately, the second teen, a 14-year-old male, went underwater and did not resurface," the report said. The Emmet County Dive Team responded to the scene and recovered the body of the teenager in the area he was last seen swimming. Sturgeon Bay is along the shore of Lake Michigan. The dive team reported there was a strong northeast current that was pulling the rescuers as they began search efforts. "Northern Lake Michigan and its currents are very dangerous. We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution when entering the water," the sheriff said. The Emmet County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene the U.S. Coast Guard, Emmet County EMS, Emmet County Search and Rescue, Pellston Fire Department, Carp Lake Fire Department, Readmond-Friendship Fire Department and the Emmet County Medical Examiners Office.
