The last time Nate Diaz fought under the UFC banner was in September 2022, when he scored a submission win over Tony Ferguson in a fight that came to be when his initial opponent, Khamzat Chimaev, came in overweight for their main event welterweight matchup. The matchup at UFC 279 was the final fight on Diaz's UFC contract. The now 40-year-old Diaz seems interested in making a return to the UFC in 2025.
"I plan on going back to UFC," Diaz said on "The HJR Podcast." "If they'll have me, I would like to go back and (expletive) whoop someone's ass there. I'm not fighting at (155 pounds), though. Right now I'm not fighting in there because there's nobody to fight really. It's kind of slow rolling. I don't really have a name in mind right now in the UFC. That's why I'm not there right now."
Diaz (21-13 MMA, 16-11 UFC) has not competed in MMA since his win over Ferguson. Instead, he picked up a 1-1 record in boxing during his time away from the Octagon, losing a decision to Jake Paul in 2023 and then beating former UFC opponent Jorge Masvidal by decision in 2024.
As for who Diaz could face if he makes a UFC return, the one-time UFC lightweight title challenger said that a trilogy fight against Conor McGregor would be on the table.
"Whenever he's back, I'm sure we're going to fight," Diaz said of the man he went 1-1 against. "Me and him for sure got unfinished (business). Got to happen."
In the first Diaz vs. McGregor matchup, the Stockton, California competitor scored a second-round submission upset over his Irish opponent at UFC 196 in March 2016. The two then met in a rematch at UFC 202 in August 2016, with McGregor picking up a majority decision win in that matchup. Both Diaz vs. McGregor meetings won "Fight of the Night" bonuses.
As for other potential opponents, Diaz expressed interest in facing former UFC featherweight champions Max Holloway and Ilia Topuria.
"Those are the guys right there who I would want to fight, like Max Holloway," Diaz said. "I would like to fight the other guy who's really good too, Topuria. He's really good, but he's smaller than me. I'm done with 155. I'm cool off that. It always was (a hard weight cut). When I was 18, it was hard. I'm staying at '70. I'll fight at 185, too."
Not long after speaking about McGregor, Holloway, and Topuria, Diaz uploaded a video to his YouTube page where he said he would be willing to face former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.
I'll fight Belal's ass," Nate Diaz said while watching Muhammad lose his title to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315. "I think I'd beat the (expletive) out of Belal Muhammad."
UFC CEO Dana White has not spoken about a potential Diaz return to the promotion, but Diaz seemed to fight out his contract on good terms with White and the promotion.
"I always joke around about dealing with the Diaz Brothers. These two, you see it now. They're two iconic fighters that20 years from now everybody will remember and talk about. This will always be Nate's house. Nate grew up here," White said in 2023. "He came up on 'The Ultimate Fighter.' He fought some of the biggest fights ever here. We love the kid. I don't know about fighting in the future, but this is always going to be his house. We'll see."

Aaron Pico gets UFC 319 co-main event vs. Lerone Murphy

Aaron Pico's UFC debut won't come vs. Movsar Evloev after all. Initially scheduled for UFC on ABC 9, Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will now fight Lerone Murphy in the co-main event for UFC 319 on Aug. 16 in Chicago. The new matchup was officially announced during the UFC on ABC 9 broadcast. Evloev (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) withdrew from Pico's initially-scheduled July 26 debut due to an illness and the promotion removed Pico from the card thereafter. Once news broke of the cancellation, Pico voiced on social media his hope for a rebooking at United Center, but now he'll be fighting Murphy (16-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) instead. The fight will mark Pico's highly anticipated debut after fighting his entire career in Bellator and PFL. Prior to his MMA debut, Pico was dubbed a prodigy for his extensive training background in wrestling and boxing. There were ups and downs as Pico matured in the international spotlight, but his recent outings have shown a highly-diversified game. Murphy has yet to lose in his UFC career. His promotional wins include Dan Ige, Edson Barboza, and most recently Josh Emmett. With the addition, here's the latest UFC 319 lineup:

The ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Trailer Welcomes You Back to School

Star Trek faces an uncertain future at the moment, as shows that helped define its streaming renaissance end one by one, and little is known about what lies on the horizon (especially thanks to current events in our own world). So it's perhaps fitting, then, that the one new show we do know is coming is all about welcoming a new generation back to Star Trek's fundamental ideals after a similar period of uncertainty: Starfleet Academy. To close out today's packed Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount released the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Set in the 32nd century after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, the series will follow the first new class of cadets to enroll at the titular academy in San Francisco in over a century, as the Federation rebuilds and reconnects after the cataclysmic events of 'The Burn' from Discovery's third season. The new trailer, aside from being packed with references to all of Star Trek history (from Academy wing names to courses on figures like Captain Sisko), introduces us to a whole host of new and familiar faces as classes begin. The series will be led by Holly Hunter, who plays Nahla Ake, the captain of the U.S.S. Athena, a long-lived half-Lanthanite (the same humanoid species as Strange New Worlds' Commander Pelia, played by Carol Kane) who also serves as the Academy's chancellor. Among the senior staff at the academy, she'll be joined by Discovery's Tig Notaro and Voyager's Robert Picardo, reprising their roles as Jett Reno and the Emergency Medical Hologram simply known as the Doctor, respectively—they'll also be joined in a guest star capacity by Discovery's Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr as Sylvia Tilly and Admiral Vance, respectively. One new addition to the campus staff is Gina Yashere's Lura Thok, the Athena's first officer as well as Starfleet Academy's cadet master—fascinatingly, a half-Klingon, half-Jem'Hadar, the genetically engineered footsoldiers of the Dominion from Deep Space Nine. Of course, an academy needs students, and Starfleet Academy will follow a whole host of new recruits making their way through training. Here's the rundown: Even if Starfleet Academy is a school-set series, Star Trek still needs a baddie, and the show will have one in the form of Paul Giamatti, cheekily and mysteriously introduced at the end of the trailer. Giamatti plays Nus Braka, a seedy gang leader (and himself another half-Klingon, this time a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid) who has some ominous connections to one of the new cadets at the academy. The first season of Starfleet Academy is set to begin streaming on Paramount+ in early 2026. The show has already been renewed for a second season. Want more io9 news? The First Trailer for ‘Star Trek: Khan' Lifts the Lid on a Legend

Almost three years ago, Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer shocked the Star Trek universe when he announced that he would be returning to one of Trek's most iconic villains in Star Trek: Khan, a scripted podcast revealing the secret life of Khan Noonien Singh. Now, we have our first look at the series—and know when to expect it. During today's Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount revealed the first trailer for Khan, giving us a first listen at its cast in action. Set between the events of the iconic original series episode that introduced Khan, 'Space Seed', and its sequel film, Wrath of Khan, the podcast sees Naveen Andrews play the titular superhuman as he navigates the exile thrust upon him by Captain Kirk on Ceti Alpha V. Alongside Andrews, Star Trek: Khan will also star Wrenn Schmidt as Lieutenant Marla McGivers, the Starfleet historian played by Madlyn Rhue in 'Space Seed' who reluctantly aided Khan in his attempt to take over the Enterprise, and Sonya Cassidy as a new character named Doctor Rosalind Lear. In a surprise twist, they will be joined by two Star Trek legends: George Takei will once again reprise his role as Hikaru Sulu, former conn officer of the Enterprise and captain of the U.S.S. Excelsior, but he will also be joined by Voyager's Tim Russ. Russ will reprise his role as Tuvok, building on the Vulcan's backstory first explored in the season three anniversary episode 'Flashback', which revealed that Tuvok's first Starfleet commission saw him serve as a junior science officer aboard the Excelsior during the events of The Undiscovered Country. Star Trek: Khan will release as a weekly episodic podcast starting on September 8—better known as Star Trek Day, marking the franchise's 59th anniversary—with episodes dropping through November 6.
