Dr. El-Ghatit, a towering figure in legal thought and human rights advocacy, died earlier today, leaving behind a legacy defined by intellectual rigor, generosity, and a lifelong commitment to justice.
In a tribute shared on social media, Sawiris recalled frequent visits to El-Ghatit's expansive office in Cairo's Garden City district, where rows of important legal and philosophical books lined the floor.
He
described
the warmth with which the late scholar welcomed him, often offering books from his personal collection and insisting on replacing them at his own expense.
Sawiris also shared a poignant memory of El-Ghatit's late father, who used to buy multiple copies of books so that his son could gift them to peers interested in the pursuit of knowledge. This gesture, Sawiris said, reflected a deep-rooted family tradition of intellectual generosity.

Anti-Hamas militia in Gaza admits coordinating with Israeli military - War on Gaza

The leader of a Palestinian armed group opposed to Hamas and accused of looting aid in the Gaza Strip openly confirmed on Sunday that his militia coordinates with the Israeli military. Yasser Abu Shabab, head of the Popular Forces — a group lacking any genuine popular support — said his fighters move freely within areas under Israeli military control and inform Israeli forces of their planned operations in advance. 'We keep them informed, but we carry out the military actions on our own,' Abu Shabab told Makan, Israel's Arabic-language public radio broadcaster. He also acknowledged receiving 'logistical and financial support from several parties,' though he stopped short of naming Israel directly. 'There are things we can't talk about publicly,' he added. Last month, Israeli officials admitted to backing armed Palestinian groups opposed to Hamas in Gaza without naming them. Local media identified Abu Shabab's militia as the recipient of this support. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the arrangement, saying, 'It is only good, it is saving lives of Israeli soldiers.' But former defence minister and Knesset member Avigdor Lieberman condemned the government for 'giving weapons to a group of criminals and felons.' The European Council on Foreign Relations describes Abu Shabab as the leader of a criminal gang in the Rafah region of southern Gaza suspected of looting aid trucks intended for civilians. Abu Shabab ignored these allegations in his interview, insisting that his militia's sole purpose is to defeat Hamas and offer an alternative governing authority in Gaza. 'We do not belong to any ideology or political organisation,' he said, adding that his aim was to eradicate Hamas's 'injustice' and 'corruption.' 'We will continue to fight, no matter the bloodshed,' he added. 'Right now, Hamas is dying. They know their end is near.' Abu Shabab's open collaboration with Israel has enraged Hamas, which has governed Gaza since 2007. On Wednesday, a Hamas military court ordered him to turn himself in within 10 days to face charges including treason. On Sunday, a coalition of Palestinian clans condemned the Popular Forces for 'shamelessly collaborating with the enemy.' 'They are rejected by all our people,' the coalition said in a statement. 'We will show no mercy to them or anyone who follows in their footsteps by aiding the occupation. They will be treated as they deserve to be: traitors and collaborators.' *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israel Between the Jaws of a Mill

Written by Howayda Awad Ahmed Israel's deception of European countries and the lies it employs in the media it broadcasts to those countries, claiming that the land inhabited by the Jews is the Promised Land, and that the Palestinians are merely Arab inhabitants seeking to strip them of their Jewish identity. Because most of those countries have a mental makeup problem, namely the persecution of Jews since ancient all the crimes committed by the Zionist army against defenseless civilians and children are in defense of existence. Since Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa, European support has reached its peak at all levels. They support the Israeli existence and the defense of its land, as they claim. This support has not ceased to this day due to the Zionist media fabrications, lies, and various stories broadcast to delude the European continent into believing that they are in a state of defense of existence. Quite simply, Gaza was lost and reduced to rubble, with more than 25,000 martyrs and thousands more injured, hungry, and disabled. All this was applauded by Europe, which embraces all the ideas promoted by the Hebrew media in Europe day and night to gain positions and endless support. This was in the complete absence of international and humanitarian law, international conventions, and treaties. But a surprise recently occurred: the European conscience began to awaken slightly from its deep slumber and accepted the proposal of Spain and Ireland in 2024 and to consider the European partnership with Israel. This stems from the refutation of the position of the Israeli government and its far-right Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding US President Donald Trump's recent moves in the Middle East, the negotiations with Iran to halt its nuclear program, Trump's choice to play it alone, far from Israel, his agreement with the Houthis in Yemen, the cessation of airstrikes on Yemen, and the exclusion of Israeli ships from the agreement. Netanyahu felt anger and disappointment, and that Trump only cares about America's interests, even at Israel's expense. Matters worsened when Trump visited the Gulf last month, ignoring a visit to Israel. The situation then escalated with the establishment of mechanisms and a negotiating line directly with Hamas to secure the release of an American prisoner without any reference to Israel. Europe is following Trump's ideology directly, but this time it has adopted an independent approach, not subservient to the US position all along. It has a different stance on events in the Middle East and Ukraine, and is committed to European economic security. Europe's pent-up anger is searching for an outlet to explode from Israeli practices. We have seen France, Britain, and Canada in particular summon Israeli ambassadors, suspend talks on a free trade zone with Britain, and demand and condemn the cessation of displacement, genocide, and starvation in Gaza, and open the door to humanitarian aid. Israel's response, unfortunately, was the Gideon Armored Vehicles, an operation designed to end its plan to completely occupy Gaza, divide it, and tighten security control over it. It has thrown all European opinion, unable to ignore humanitarian and civil society organizations working in international relief, universities, and school students denouncing Israeli massacres, and bringing this matter to the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court. All of this has put pressure on Europe. Because the world is now governed by the logic of the jungle and double standards, Europe's position will become difficult if it does so, harming its position on the Russian-Ukrainian war. It has found it necessary to unify its position and change its direction. This has placed the entity under isolation and boycotts in various popular spheres, halting conferences and research activities, and closing some Israeli-affiliated companies. This clear and explicit threat from the European Union will have a profound impact due to Israel's violations of human rights. Israel may even lose trade relations with the European Union, which accounts for more than 30 percent of Israel's international trade. The situation is exacerbated in the practical field, including satellites and the requirements of scientific advancements in the field of computers and globalization. The issue of a European review and the suspension of the partnership between the 27 member states represented by the European Union and the practical suspension of their partnership with Israel seems a remote possibility, as it requires the unanimity of all member states. However, the good thing about what is happening is that there are more than 15 member states capable of halting trade with Israel, even if the decision is opposed by Germany and Hungary, with their significant influence. But in the end, it appears that all this opposition and skirmishes are nothing more than a purely political exercise to appease European public opinion, which has recently awakened and begun to grieve. Despite all this, the Jewish lobby abroad will not allow any resolution to emerge that opposes and undermines Israel's path of killing, destruction, and displacement. Therefore, Israel pretended to accept the pressure and allowed the entry of some food, relief supplies, and trucks, which do not meet the needs of Gaza, which is crying out for refuge. Unfortunately, this aid was used as a political bargaining chip and a weapon for Israel in a war that will only end by a miracle. Then the Zionist entity resumes broadcasting to the European media that they do not understand the gravity of the security situation and that the people of Israel are threatened by the Arabs, thus allowing its actions to go unpunished, dissolving partnerships, terminating trade agreements, and stripping it of its international immunity. Let us see what the outcome of the two-state solution conference this month at the United Nations, under French and Saudi sponsorship, will be, and what recommendations it may ultimately unravel. Then Israel resumes broadcasting to the European media to stop European decisions, using the old priesthood of anti-Semitism and its influence on European commercial, political, economic, social, and even humanitarian decision-makers. Israel will not abandon its old dream of extending the Nile to the Euphrates and its project of regional expansion in Lebanon, Syria, and all the countries of the Arab region. It will maintain a state of no war, no peace, and insecurity, which will make all the countries of the region aware that future expansionism will not stop as long as the United States and the European Union take a position of objection at times and rejection at other times, to silence the peoples of the world.

Where is the Arab League headed

Dr. Mohamed Dabasha Member of the Egyptian Writers Union The Arab League initially consisted of seven Arab countries that enjoyed political independence at the time: Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Transjordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen. By consensus of the delegations of the founding countries, the final version of the Charter of the Arab League, headquartered in Cairo, was reached. It was adopted on March 19, 1945, consisting of an introduction, twenty articles, and three annexes. It was signed by delegates of the Arab countries at a ceremony held in Cairo on March 22, 1945. The Arab League is the oldest international organization established after World War II, predating the United Nations by several months. The objectives of its establishment were as follows: 1- Policy coordination: Unifying the political positions of member states on issues of concern to them. 2- Protecting the independence and sovereignty of Arab states: Protecting the independence and sovereignty of member states from any external interference. 3- Concern for Common Affairs and Interests: Concern for the common affairs and interests of Arab countries, such as national security and cultural unity. 4- Enhancing Cooperation in Various Fields: Cooperation in the economic, cultural, social, media, and other fields. 5- Dispute Settlement: Mediation in resolving disputes that arise between member states or between them and other states. 5- Joint Defense Coordination: Coordination of joint defense efforts among member states. 6- Achieving Economic Integration: Promoting economic integration among member states through trade and cooperation agreements. One of the most notable achievements of the League of Arab States is its contribution to the independence of Arab countries, as it supported liberation efforts in Algeria, the Sultanate of Oman, Yemen, and Sudan. This role was the direct reason for the expansion of its membership to include 22 Arab countries, while the number of countries that signed the founding charter did not exceed seven countries. Since the inception of the Arab League, it was agreed that the League's headquarters would be located in Egypt, hosted by the Nile in Cairo. This remains the case to this day. However, a few days ago, Saudi writer Obaid Al-Abed called for the General Secretariat of the Arab League to be freed from the monopoly of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in a post on his X account. He stated that the position of Secretary-General should be filled by someone he described as "Arab notables and political astute individuals." He believes that Saudi Minister of State Adel Al-Jubeir is the most qualified to assume this position at the present time. Some Egyptian writers agreed with him, adding that the League of Arab States should be moved from Cairo to Saudi Arabia, angered by the League's failure to implement the Charter, especially the clause related to the Joint Defense Agreement to protect Arab lands from occupation. The question is: Will moving the building from Cairo to Saudi Arabia change the Arab League's performance, making it equivalent to the UN Security Council for Arab states? Or is the location irrelevant to the ongoing disagreements on many issues, particularly Israel's destruction of the Gaza Strip, the killing, wounding, and displacement of thousands of Gazans, and Trump's calls to deport all Gazans to other countries to be served to Israel on a golden platter? All of these are dubious and worthless calls. All member states have the right, once Aboul Gheit's presidency ends, to nominate someone suitable for the position. Whoever wins, we should not be judged by their nationality, because we are all Arabs, united by land, blood, and language. There is no difference between a Saudi and an Egyptian, an Iraqi and an Algerian, a Libyan and a Moroccan. We must all refrain from siding with these calls, which divide those who are divided and ignite the fires of discord, devouring whatever remains of harmony among some Arab states. We must also strive to ensure that the Arab League serves as an umbrella under which all Arab states can find shelter.
