Condemn efforts to ‘saffronize' education sector in Kerala, says minister V Sivankutty
He was responding to concerns raised in connection with the 'Jnanasabha' event held in Ernakulam on Sunday.
"Attempts to bring the education sector under the influence of any particular ideology or political agenda cannot be accepted under any circumstances. Education should be accessible and secular for everyone. However, it is concerning that some organizations are trying to distort educational policies to suit their interests," the minister said.
"It is particularly worrying that the vice-chancellors of five universities in the state are participating in an event led by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Universities should be independent and impartial. Using institutions for political interests will have far-reaching consequences," Sivankutty added.
The state govt is committed to protecting Kerala's public and higher education sectors, Sivankutty said. The govt's goal is to ensure an education system that aligns with the fundamental principles of the Constitution and democratic values. The public in Kerala will take all necessary steps to counter attempts at saffronization and uphold the secular nature of the education sector, he added.

NEP making contribution to holistic development of students: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that there have been many positive changes in the field of education during the last five years and the new National Education Policy (NEP) is making a significant contribution to the holistic and multidimensional development of students by encouraging research and innovation. In a message on the completion of five years of NEP, Modi noted that the Ministry of Education is organising Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS) on Tuesday and new initiatives will be launched in the field of education during the programme. "Education is the medium that makes a person self-reliant and a nation strong. Our aim is to ensure such an education system in which students can move forward according to their interest, ability and dreams. Today, the country is moving on the path of progress by equipping the education related to the glorious Indian culture with technology and global standards. "There have been many positive changes in the field of education during the last five years. Whether it is education in mother tongue, strengthening school education or giving special emphasis on skill-based education, the National Education Policy is making a significant contribution to the holistic and multidimensional development of students by encouraging research and innovation," Modi said. The prime minister noted that in Amrit Kaal, India is rapidly moving towards the creation of a grand and developed country. "During this period, the role of National Education Policy-2020 will be important in promoting the confidence, curiosity and creativity of our youth. The shiksha samagam is a symbol of our shared resolve and spirit of cooperation. "I am confident that this event will not only give educational institutions an opportunity to share their best practices, strategies and achievements, but will also further strengthen the continuous efforts for the successful implementation of the National Education Policy," he said. The Ministry of Education is organising the ABSS on Tuesday to coincide with the fifth anniversary of NEP, when academicians, policymakers, educators, industry leaders and government will review the progress made so far in implementing the ambitious policy. The deliberations during ABSS 2025 will focus on making education more accessible, practical, skill-oriented and seamlessly integrated with employment opportunities, ensuring students are equipped for a dynamic global economy, they said. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is scheduled to inaugurate the conference that is scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam. Devendra Fadnavis: BJP wants to contest civic polls under Mahayuti alliance
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that the BJP wants to contest the local body polls under Mahayuti alliance with its partners Shiv Sena and NCP but in seats where it is not possible, the allies 'should not work against each other'. Fadnavis was speaking to mediapersons in Wardha after a meeting with BJP office-bearers and local leaders to assess the preparations for civic polls, which is expected to be held later this year. 'The BJP wants to contest the local body elections with alliance partners (Shiv Sena and NCP) under Mahayuti banner. Wherever this is not possible for local reasons we will have a friendly fight,' he said. 'Ideally since we are a coalition government, we would like to continue the contest as Mahayuti. But wherever we do not contest under an alliance, we should ensure there is no bitterness and nobody works against each other,' the BJP leader added. Fadnavis also expressed confidence over the alliance winning the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, claiming that the next mayor of Mumbai will be from Mahayuti. 'The next mayor in Mumbai will be from Mahayuti. It does not matter whether Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS come together or fight separately. One thing is very clear that Mahayuti will win the elections in BMC and also have its Mayor in Mumbai,' he said. Mentioning about BJP's record victory in last year's Assembly polls — the party won 137 seats — the chief minister said, 'In the next five years, our government will fulfill the aspirations of the common man. When the government completes five years, Maharashtra will be completely transformed.' Launching an attack on the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), he added, 'The opposition cannot compete with us on the development agenda. Therefore, they come out with a new narrative every day. On the Maharashtra Special Public Security Act, they started attacking the government mindlessly. This shows their total disregard for the Constitution and democracy,' he said, stressing the Act was not against political opponents.

Only by acknowledging diversity can India progress, says D. Raja
Senior CPI leader D. Raja said on Monday in Chennai that communists and followers of Periyar and Ambedkar should come together to oppose the BJP-RSS combine's attempts to undermine Parliament and parliamentary democracy. Addressing a function organised to release the book Kaalamthorum Communists by writer Jeevabharathi, he said India could progress only if its tremendous diversity was acknowledged. 'India is a 'Union of States', not a unitary State. The BJP seeks to do away with parliamentary democracy. Democracy will die if Parliament becomes redundant. It happened in Germany during Hitler's regime,' he said. Mr. Raja said it was the need of the hour for communists to work closely with Periyarists and Ambedkarists to liberate people from exploitation and inequality. CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam said communists, who had fought uncompromisingly for the uplift and rights of the people and spent many years in jail, had also campaigned for prison reforms. 'We still need many reforms. There are no doors on toilets. When I was in jail, I requested officials to fix at least half a door,' he said, urging State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu to bring the issue to the attention of the government. Mr. Shanmugam called upon members of the communist parties to read both volumes of the book and spread the message of their commitment to the people. Mr. Thennarasu, who participated on behalf of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, said while times could change, the commitment of communists does not. 'Communists are constantly fighting for the people,' he said. He also read out a message from the Chief Minister. 'Our leader Kalaignar (M. Karunanidhi) had faith in communism as an ideology because it was important for humanity, our people, and our land. His writings and approach were strongly influenced by communism. That was why he said he would have become a communist had he not met Anna (C.N. Annadurai),' the Chief Minister stated. He added the Slum Clearance Board and the abolition of hand-pulled rickshaws were shaped by communist ideology. 'The pioneers of the Dravidian Movement firmly believed that political freedom should be accompanied by freedom from social oppression and class-based inequality,' he said, noting the book would serve as a guide for society. CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan, lyricist Vairamuthu, and NCBH chairman Stalin Gunasekaran also participated.
