The hidden job crisis: 25% of Americans are functionally unemployed and it's worse than it sounds
The unemployment rate in America seems low. However, a new report suggests a different story. The Ludwig Institute says the 'true' unemployment rate is much higher. It includes people working part-time or earning low wages. Black and Hispanic workers are affected more. The institute hopes to provide a clearer picture of the economic situation. This helps policymakers make better decisions.

FAQs
At first glance, the U.S. job market looks strong, as the unemployment rate remained near a 50-year low in April 2025 at 4.2%, and American employers added 177,000 jobs, even amid the uncertainty of tariffs and trade wars, as per a report. But the 'true' rate of unemployment in the US in April was 24.3%, which rose 0.03% from the previous month, as per the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity (LISEP) data, reported Moneywise. LISEP's True Rate of Unemployment (TRU) includes the data of the unemployed people in the US and also the workers who are employed but still struggling, according to the report.LISEP Chair Gene Ludwig said, 'We are facing a job market where nearly one-in-four workers are functionally unemployed, and current trends show little sign of improvement,' quoted Moneywise. The institute's metric, called the True Rate of Unemployment (TRU), redefines what it means to be employed, and unlike the Bureau of Labour Statistics, which counts a person as employed even if they worked as little as one hour in a two-week period, TRU focuses on whether that work is actually sustainable, according to the report.Anyone falling short of that, like part-time workers looking for more hours, those earning poverty-level wages, or people who aren't counted by the BLS because they stopped looking for work are included in the TRU, as per Moneywise.Ludwig explained that, 'The harsh reality is that far too many Americans are still struggling to make ends meet, and absent an influx of dependable, good-paying jobs, the economic opportunity gap will widen,' as quoted in the report. The official unemployment rate leaves out people who aren't actively job hunting, even if they want work, and in April, that included 5.7 million people, as per Moneywise. TRU includes them along with low-wage workers and the underemployed, offering a more complete view of who's actually making a living, according to the report.LISEP said the rate reported by the BLS is 'not technically false,' but is 'deceiving,' considering the number of Americans in the workforce who are 'employed on poverty-like wages' or 'on a reduced workweek that they do not want,' reported Moneywise. The numbers are even more concerning when broken down by race and gender, as per Moneywise report:The institute also revealed that Black Americans have had a higher TRU than white Americans every single month since 1995, as per the report.LISEP says, this method, 'provide policymakers and the public with a more transparent view of the economic situation of all Americans, particularly low- and middle-income households, compared with misleading headline statistics,' quoted Moneywise.Ludwig said, 'Amid an already uncertain economic outlook, the rise in functional unemployment is a concerning development,' adding, 'This uncertainty comes at a price, and unfortunately, the low- and middle-income wage earners ultimately end up paying the bill," as quoted in the report. It's reported by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity (LISEP), which aims to show the full picture of employment in the US.Not exactly, because it's just limited. LISEP says it's 'not technically false,' but it doesn't tell the full story.

Department of Justice settles with HPE and Juniper Networks: What you need to know
The Department of Justice has reached a settlement in its lawsuit that challenged server maker Hewlett-Packard Enterprise's takeover of Juniper Networks for $14 billion, as per court filings. This comes when a trial was set to start in the matter in less than two weeks, Bloomberg reported. In an official release, the US Justice Department stated that it advised the court that a settlement was made with the two companies, adding that it allows their merger to continue. The Department of Justice has settled its lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard Enterprise's $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks. Photographer: Ian Maule/Bloomberg(Bloomberg) Gail Slater, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division, has thanked all from the department for their work on the case. Department of Justice Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle dubbed it "another key legal victory" for the division. "Our attorneys will continue fighting and winning to defend the American people and consumers,' Mizelle added. Also Read: Iran reopens central and western airspace after ceasefire with Israel: What does this mean for international flights? HPE, Juniper Networks reach settlement with Justice Department As part of the settlement, the combined company is required to divest HPE's Instant On wireless networking business as well as license the source code for Mist AI software of Juniper Networks. This is used in the company's Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) products. The joint settlement was filed late Friday night and is now seeking the approval of a judge. This could avoid the matter going to court for the scheduled trial on July 9. A joint statement from the two companies stated that Hewlett Packard Enterprise had on January 9, 2024, announced the agreement to acquire Juniper in "an all-cash transaction". This was made for $40 per share, which represented the equity value of nearly $14 billion. They said that the agreement has now cleared the way for the transaction to close as it has resolved the concerns of the US Justice Department. Antonio Neri, president and CEO of HPE, said the agreement creates "greater competition in the global networking market,' besides offering customers a "modern network architecture alternative" to support the demands of AI workloads. The department filed a complaint against the deal in the federal court in late January 2025. It claimed that the deal would stifle competition, thus paving the way for only two companies, Cisco Systems and HPE, to control over 70 per cent of the US market for networking equipment, according to Reuters. A few weeks later, Juniper denied these allegations, stating that it failed to correctly represent the market dynamics for wireless network solutions. FAQs 1. When and where was the trial set to take place in the matter? It was scheduled to start on July 9 in San Jose, California. 2. What does the Justice Department's settlement mean for HPE and Juniper? This allows their merger to continue. 3. What's the merger deal? In January last year, HPE said that an agreement was reached to acquire Juniper in an all-cash transaction for nearly $14 billion.

McDonald's opens more outlets in Ukraine amidst war against Russia. Here's how American fast-food chain making profits in wartime economy
McDonald's had finally reached Ukraine's remote, alpine region of Transcarpathia, and the locals could not be happier. The much-acclaimed arrival of McDonald's in Transcarpathia signals an unexpected trend for the iconic American fast-food chain: In wartime Ukraine, business is booming. McDonald's stated it plans to open about 10 new outposts in Ukraine this year, pushing its total of operational restaurants to nearly 120, more than before Russia's invasion over three years ago. Across the country, city councils are vying to secure a McDonald's restaurant, knowing the chain will bring jobs and increase local tax revenues, as per a report. McDonald's in Ukraine It is also a testament to Ukraine's rebounding wartime economy. Having secured dozens of billions in financial aid from allies and having avoided runaway inflation, Ukraine is now drawing back Western companies that fled early in the war, including Swedish furniture giant Ikea and Spanish fashion brand Zara. Ukraine's economy is projected to grow by 2 per cent to 3 per cent this year, the third consecutive year of growth, although economic output remains below prewar levels, NYT News Service reported. This success builds on a long-running love affair between a post-Soviet country and an American brand, a reflection of Ukraine's growing embrace of Western lifestyle, as per the NYT News Service report. McDonald's in Kyiv Live Events McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in 1997. The company's arrival was a major attraction in a country that had gained independence from the Soviet Union just six years earlier and was only beginning to open to the West. Crowds lined up for days to get a taste of the chain's storied burgers. As the company expanded its footprint, Ukrainians' enthusiasm only grew. In 2011, the McDonald's restaurant at Kyiv's central train station ranked as the second-busiest in the world. Ukrainian children love celebrating their birthdays at McDonald's, while students often grab Big Macs after late-night parties. McDonald's during Russia-Ukraine After Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine in early 2022, McDonald's closed all of its restaurants. Some establishments, in cities such as Kherson and Melitopol, were destroyed or fell under Russian occupation. Meanwhile, the brand exited the Russian market, joining a wave of departing Western companies. As Russia's initial invasion foundered and its troops pulled back to eastern Ukraine, life cautiously returned to Kyiv. Kuleba urged Blinken to encourage McDonald's to resume operations. "Life is coming back," he recalled telling him during a call. "I think it would send a powerful message if McDonald's came back, too." When the chain reopened in Kyiv in September 2022, people lined for hours -- a scene reminiscent of its post-Soviet debut. The reopenings have not come without risk. The same Kyiv outpost that first opened in 1997 has been damaged several times in Russian attacks, most recently during a January drone and missile strike that shattered its storefront, blowing out its windows. It has since reopened. FAQs Q1. What is capital of Ukraine? A1. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. Q2. When did McDonald's open first restaurant? A2. McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in 1997.

G7 backs US proposal to exempt American firms from parts of global tax agreement
The United States and the Group of Seven nations have agreed to support a proposal that would exempt US companies from some components of an existing global agreement read more The United States and other Group of Seven (G7) nations have agreed to support a proposal that would exempt American companies from certain components of a global tax agreement, the G7 said in a statement on Saturday. The agreement follows a US proposal aimed at shielding American firms from new international tax charges on the grounds that they already pay equivalent taxes under domestic law. The G7 stated that the arrangement acknowledges existing US minimum tax regulations and seeks to enhance stability in the international tax framework. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signalled Thursday that a deal is forthcoming among G7 nations allowing US firms to be excluded from certain taxes imposed by other countries. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'After months of productive dialogue with other countries on the OECD Global Tax Deal, we will announce a joint understanding among G7 countries that defends American interests,' he said in a series of social media posts. US President Donald Trump has pushed back on the global tax agreement, with Bessent on Thursday pointing to advances on that front. 'Based on this progress and understanding, I have asked the Senate and House to remove the Section 899 protective measure from consideration in the One, Big, Beautiful Bill,' Bessent added, referring to a bill currently before US lawmakers that would slash social program spending for tax cuts. Section 899 has been dubbed a 'revenge tax,' allowing the government to impose levies on firms with foreign owners and on investors from countries deemed to impose unfair taxes on US businesses. The clause sparked concern that it would inhibit foreign companies from investing in the United States. With inputs from agencies
