Bursa Malaysia kicks off higher, mirrors Wall Street gains

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened slightly higher on Tuesday, rebounding from yesterday's decline as investors tracked an overnight rally on Wall Street.
At 9.07 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 2.09 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 1,558.23 from Monday's close of 1,556.14.
The benchmark index had opened 0.78 of-a-point higher at 1,556.92.

Turnover stood at 123.18 million shares valued at RM58.98 million.
Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB), in a note, said it expects the FBM KLCI to trend sideways during the ongoing corporate results season, amid a tariff-driven global economic slowdown that could weigh on domestic activity and earnings.
"This cautious outlook will likely persist until a permanent and mutually beneficial trade deal is reached between the United States and key trading partners, including Malaysia," the investment bank said.
HLIB added that lingering policy uncertainty from the Trump administration and unclear signals on the Federal Reserve's rate path would continue to pressure market sentiment and business confidence.
Among heavyweights, CIMB and Petronas Gas added 2.0 sen each to RM7.12 and RM17.60, respectively. Public Bank and Press Metal were unchanged at RM4.49 and RM4.96, while Maybank, Tenaga Nasional and IHH Healthcare slipped 2.0 sen each to RM10.12, RM14.08 and RM6.97.

Value store operator Eco-Shop posts higher earnings, revenue in FY25

KUALA LUMPUR: Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd recorded a net profit of RM204.32 million for its financial year ended May 31, 2025 (FY2025), from RM177.28 million a year earlier. The Johor-based dollar-store chain stated that the improved net profit was achieved despite higher operating costs arising from its expanded store network and the implementation of minimum wage policies. Revenue for the year also strengthened to RM2.79 billion against RM2.40 billion, underpinned by the net addition of 74 new stores during the financial year. "Same-store sales growth (SSSG) recorded a marginal decline of 0.4 per cent, reflecting normalisation in consumer spending at mature outlets, partly attributed to product availability challenges," the group said in a Bursa Malaysia filing today. The number of sales transactions increased 21.6 per cent to 114.8 million in FY2025. For the fourth quarter, the retailer recorded a net profit of RM49.41 million against RM63.27 million year-on-year. Revenue for the quarter, however, rose to RM688.98 million against RM640.67 million a year earlier, primarily driven by the continued expansion of the group's store network, with the net addition of 22 new stores in the quarter versus 19 in the fourth quarter of 2024. The total store count increased to 371 stores in the fourth quarter of 2025 from 297 in the fourth quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, the company declared an interim single-tier dividend of 1.0 sen per ordinary share or approximately RM57.5 million in respect of FY2025, to be paid on Aug 26, 2025. The entitlement date for the dividend falls on Aug 12, 2025. According to the filing, the number of sales transactions increased 12.4 per cent to 28.9 million in the fourth quarter of FY2025. "The price increase was effected on April 14, 2025, which raised the selling price of Eco-Shop products to RM2.60 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM2.80 in East Malaysia, contributing to the group's revenue uplift," Eco-Shop said. The group said, as consumer preferences continue to shift toward affordability and convenience, Eco-Shop is well-positioned to scale further and increase its relevance nationwide. "We remain vigilant in managing inflationary and structural cost pressures, including higher electricity tariffs, the expanded Sales and Services Tax, and the 2.0 per cent EPF contribution for foreign workers. "We are strengthening our resilience through supply chain efficiencies, strategic pricing, productivity improvements, and close collaboration with our suppliers," it added. The group said that despite a setback in SSSG, its margins and performance are expected to remain healthy or continue to improve going forward. "Our store network expansion continues to be a key long-term strategy for deeper market penetration. We remain focused on delivering strong, sustainable financial performance over the long term," said Eco-Shop.

Smile-Link Healthcare reprimanded for Leap Market listing breach

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia has issued a public reprimand to Smile-Link Healthcare Global Bhd for violating the Leap Market listing requirements. The stock exchange said Smile-Link Healthcare failed to announce its audited financial statements (AFS 2024) including the auditors' and directors' reports for the 18-month financial period ending June 30, 2024, by the deadline of Oct 31, 2024. "Smile-Link only released the AFS 2024 on April 31, 2025, resulting in a six-month delay," it said in a statement. Bursa said the delay was primarily due to unresolved issues and disputes with the company's external auditors, which eventually led to their removal on Jan 20, 2025. However, it said the delay was unjustified, stressing that all listed companies are expected to fulfil their recurring regulatory obligation to announce financial statements on time. "Bursa Malaysia views the breach seriously as timely submission of financial statements is a fundamental obligation of listed companies and is of paramount importance in ensuring an orderly and fair market for securities traded. "Bursa Malaysia has also reminded Smile-Link and its board of directors of their responsibilities to maintain the appropriate standards of corporate responsibility and accountability to its shareholders and the investing public," it said.

Europe reacts with mix of relief and concern to US trade deal

EUROPEAN governments and companies reacted with both relief and concern on Monday to the framework trade deal struck with US President Donald Trump, acknowledging what was seen as an unbalanced deal but one that avoided a deeper trade war. The agreement, announced on Sunday between two economies that account for almost a third of global trade, will see the US impose a 15 per cent import tariff on most EU goods - half the threatened rate but much more than what Europeans hoped for. Many of the specifics of the deal were not immediately known, however. "As we await full details of the new EU–U.S. trade agreement, one thing is clear: this is a moment of relief but not of celebration," Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever wrote on X. "Tariffs will increase in several areas and some key questions remain unresolved." Trump said the deal, including an investment pledge topping the US$550 billion deal signed with Japan last week, would expand ties between the trans-Atlantic powers after years of what he called unfair treatment of US exporters. It will bring clarity for European makers of cars, planes and chemicals. But the EU had initially hoped for a zero-for-zero tariff deal. And the 15 per cent baseline tariff, while an improvement on the threatened rate of 30 per cent, compares to an average US import tariff rate of around 2.5 per cent last year before Trump's return to the White House. European Commission chief Von der Leyen, describing Trump as a tough negotiator, told reporters on Sunday that it was "the best we could get." European stocks opened up on Monday, with the STOXX 600 at a four-month high and all other major bourses also in the green. Tech and healthcare stocks led the way. "The 15 per cent rate is better than the market was fearing," said Jefferies economist Mohit Kumar. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the deal, saying it averted a trade conflict that would have hit Germany's export-driven economy and its large auto sector hard. French government ministers said on Monday that the deal had some merits - such as exemptions they hoped to see for some key French business sectors such as spirits - but was nevertheless not balanced. Industry minister Marc Ferracci stressed more talks - potentially lasting weeks or months - would be needed before the deal could be formally concluded. "This is not the end of the story," he told RTL radio. European companies, meanwhile, were left wondering whether to cheer or lament the accord. "Those who expect a hurricane are grateful for a storm," said Wolfgang Große Entrup, head of the German Chemical Industry Association VCI. "Further escalation has been avoided. Nevertheless, the price is high for both sides. European exports are losing competitiveness. US customers are paying the tariffs," he said. Stellantis shares were up 3.5 per cent and car parts maker Valeo jumped 4.7 per cent while German pharma group Merck KGaA rose 2.9 per cent, in a sign of relief for those sectors. Among the many questions that remain to be answered, however, is how the EU's promise to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the US and steeply increase energy purchases can be turned into reality. It was not immediately clear if specific pledges of increased investments were made or whether the details still must be hammered out. And while the EU pledged to make US$750 billion in strategic purchases over the next three years, including oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear fuel, the US will struggle to produce enough to meet that demand. While US LNG production capacity is due to almost double over the next four years it will still not be enough to ramp up supplies to Europe, and oil production is expected to be lower than previously forecast this year. Despite the lingering unknowns, analysts stressed the deal still helped decrease uncertainty. Oil prices rose on Monday, as did the euro. "Now that there is more clarity, you would think that not only in the United States, but around the globe, there will be a little bit more willingness to look at investment, to look at expansions, and to look at where the opportunities are," said Rodrigo Catril, senior currency strategist at National Australia Bank.
