Heads of State review: The action comedy starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, John Cena and Idris Elba is packed with fun and flair

Indian Express4 hours ago

MARKING her continued ascent as an action star, Priyanka Chopra Jonas steps into the boots of Noel Bisset, an elite MI6 agent, to protect two of the world's most high-profile leaders – John Cena as Will Derringer, an action star turned the President of the United States, and Idris Elba as Sam Clarke, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
In this buddy action comedy, Clarke and Derringer, who constantly exchange barbs and make their dislike for each other public, eventually team up to save themselves and the world. The two heads of the state are forced to parachute out of Air Force One when the aircraft is attacked and their security is compromised. They land in a border area of Belarus and make their way to Warshaw in a sheep truck. From then on, the film packs a series of cross country chases, gunfights and fisticuffs that are aimed at keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
The movie, however, starts with Noel Bissett getting grievously injured during a visit to Spain's Buñol on a mission when people are celebrating La Tomatina festival. Turns out she has not only survived that but she is entrusted with the task of ensuring the safety of Clarke and Derringer, who become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary. Bissett and Clarke, it is also revealed, were connected romantically in the past while working in the forces.
Caught in life-threatening situations as they are forced to rely on each other, Clarke and Derringer are also united in their belief regarding what makes the world a better place. Together they have to find a way to work together to thwart a global conspiracy that threatens the entire free world and make sure NATO continues to fulfil its objectives. A little focus on this crisis would have given the narrative more depth.

Even though the film occasionally becomes predictable, it remains engaging thanks to its three lead actors and slickly choreographed action sequences. As the ever-optimistic President, John Cena delivers a likable performance, while Idris Elba brings his signature coolness and wry British humour. Chopra, who Jonas has appeared as an action star in a host of movies (Don, Mary Kom) as well as series (Quantico and Citadel), in the Ilya Naishuller-directed film, seems most comfortable enacting the high-energy action scenes.
The banter between the heads of state is enjoyable, if not uproariously funny. The camaraderie between Cena and Elba adds a spark to many scenes. Chopra Jonas handles the physically demanding stunts with ease. While the script by Josh Applebaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query doesn't offer many surprises, it leans into its wacky tone to deliver a consistently entertaining action-comedy.
Streaming on Prime Video from June 2.

Who might be the next James Bond? Jacob Elordi and Tom Holland potentially in the race with others

Makers of the upcoming James Bond movie are searching for a British actor under 30 to bring new energy to the iconic character. Now that studios have confirmed that Denis Villeneuve , who starred in 'Dune,' will direct the upcoming James Bond movie, the big question is still: Who will play the title role? The studio is now seeking the perfect screenwriter, and, of course, the cast of the new James Bond movie, which will be the 26th film in the franchise, following Daniel Craig's 'No Time to Die. ' According to the reports in Variety, the makers want to cast a younger actor in the iconic role of the famous spy, James Bond. To add fresh energy to the part, they have been looking for a British actor under thirty. They are looking for someone who will continue the tradition of the classic spy movies. There are currently three names at the top of that list. The first is Jacob Elordi, the towering, powerful actor who is featured in Saltburn, Priscilla, Kissing Booth, and Euphoria. Despite being Australian, his fame and outstanding acting skills may work in his favor. Tom Holland, known for his portrayal of Spider-Man, is the next person on the list. Harris Dickinson, a rising talent who gained popularity for his performance in Babygirl, which starred Nicole Kidman, is the third and last name on the list. Famous names like Henry Cavill, Idris Alba and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have also been suggested as the fan-favourites, but due to their ages being well over 30, they might not be the fit for the criteria the studios are looking for. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Earlier on 25th June, the studios confirmed the news that they have brought in Oscar-nominated director Denis for the new James Bond film to the public through an official statement. UK distances MI6 new chief from Nazi spy grandfather dubbed ‘The Butcher' – what we know so far

The British government has cast a distance between the incoming Chief of its foreign intelligence service and her grandfather following reports he was a Nazi spy known as "The Butcher". Blaise Metreweli was announced as the incoming head of UK's Secret Intelligence Service earlier this month. She will be the intelligence service – MI6's — first female "C" (Chief) in its 116-year history. As per documents accessed by the BBC, Blaise Metreweli's paternal grandfather Constantine Dobrowolski defected from the Soviet Union's Red Army to become the Nazi's chief informant in the Chernigiv region of modern-day Ukraine. Another report by The Daily Mail, also states that German archives showed Dobrowolski was known as "the Butcher" or "Agent No 30" by Wehrmacht commanders. Dobrowolski even had a 50,000 ruble bounty placed on him by Soviet leaders, and was dubbed the "worst enemy of the Ukrainian people". He had also sent letters to superiors saying he "personally" took part "in the extermination of the Jews", The Daily Mail added. Blaise Metreweli, however, neither knew nor met her paternal grandfather, a Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement, reported AFP. 'Blaise's ancestry is characterised by conflict and division and, as is the case for many with eastern European heritage, only partially understood.' 'It is precisely this complex heritage which has contributed to her commitment to prevent conflict and protect the British public from modern threats from today's hostile states, as the next chief of MI6," reads the statement issued by the Foreign Office, reported AFP. The UK (Great Britain), a part of the Allies faced off Germany and the other Axis powers during World War II. After coming to power in 1933, Adolf Hitler flagrantly violated the Treaty of Versailles, rearming Germany and remilitarising the Rhineland in 1936. He had aggressive and ambitious foreign policy aims. Britain initially pursued a policy of appeasement, seeking to give Hitler some of what he wanted in order to preserve peace. When Hitler broke the agreement made at the Munich Conference, it became clear appeasement had failed, and war broke out following the invasion of Poland in September 1939. UK policymakers—including Churchill—believed Nazi dominance threatened the European balance of power, a cornerstone of British foreign policy since the Napoleonic era.

"Will they apologise to the country for emergency?": Haryana CM Saini targets Congress

Gurugram (Haryana) [India], June 28 (ANI): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly misleading the public during election campaigns. He further questioned the party for failing to apologise for the Emergency and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing a 'State-level Mock Parliament' organised by the BJP Mahila Morcha, Haryana's Gurugram. He exhorted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has been functioning according to the Constitution. Addressing the event in Gurugram, CM Saini said, 'During elections, Yuvraj (Rahul Gandhi) picks up the holy Constitution book and campaigns that if Modi Ji becomes the Prime Minister, the Constitution will be abolished. Under Modi Ji's leadership, this country is running according to the Constitution...' 'I want to ask the Congress people, will you apologise to the country for the Emergency? You have not apologised to date. In 1984, a particular community was massacred, and no apology was made for that either. According to this holy Constitution, if anyone has tried to get them justice, it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' the Chief Minister added. In a post on X, Saini alleged that during the Emergency, people faced atrocities 'worse' than those under British rule and paid respects to all those who endured such suffering. The social media post reads, 'Gratitude to the maternal forces present at the 'State-level Mock Parliament' organized by BJP Mahila Morcha, Haryana, in the vibrant city of Gurugram, led by Guru Dronacharya!' 'During the Emergency, people faced atrocities worse than those under British rule; I pay my respects to all those who endured such suffering. In that era, there was neither instability in the country, nor any natural disaster, nor any earthquake. Solely for their selfish motives, the Congress government trampled upon the Constitution,' it added. Between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977, India was placed under a state of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. On 25 June 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. This was the third Emergency in India's history, but the first one declared in peacetime. Earlier proclamations were during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). (ANI)
