
Global smartphone shipments barely grow in Q2, Samsung retains lead
Going into the actual breakdown by brand, Samsung led the way with an estimated 58 million shipments and a 19.7% market share. The recently launched new Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A56 models were key growth drivers for the brand.
Apple came in second place with an estimated 46.4 million shipments and 15.7% market share. Cupertino saw double-digit growth in emerging markets but also experienced a 1% drop in sales in China, despite being the leading brand in China during the 618 e-commerce festival.
Xiaomi was the third leading brand on the global stage with 42.5 million shipments and a 14.4% market share, which contributed to a net 0.6% year-over-year change. Vivo came in fourth with 27.1 million shipments and 9.2% market share, while Transsion (Infinix, Tecno, itel) occupied the fifth spot with 25.1 million quarterly shipments and an 8.5% market share.
Despite the ongoing economic hardships and uncertainties, the positive growth in global shipments suggests that the global smartphone market is primed for growth in the coming months. Samsung Galaxy A36 Samsung Galaxy A56

Well, it's all about the pre-applied screen protector on the Magic V5, which is not part of the official thickness measurement, but is, well, pre-applied, when you buy the phone, whereas the Samsung doesn't have such a perk. This just goes to show how irrelevant a 0.1mm thickness difference is in real life, despite brands loving to claim things like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest". So please keep this in mind - you won't feel 0.1mm and you won't feel 1g in real life, thus it only makes sense to make your choice for buying a device based on claims like "world's thinnest" and "world's lightest" if you then want to brag to your friends about your device wearing such a (sometimes very short-lived) crown. In this day and age, a lot of foldables are already thin enough and light enough to be very comfortable to use even when folded, so we'd advise you to make your pick based on other traits they have which you require. This is how Apple plans to save the iPhone 17 Air from Bendgate 2.0

The rest of the lineup, including the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, might have aluminum frames. In a note to investors seen by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu claims the iPhone 17 Air will be the only new model to use titanium. That would be a baffling choice, considering how much Apple has invested in promoting the premium material for its Pro phones since the release of the iPhone 15 Pro. At first sight, that would be a confusing choice for the iPhone 17 Air because titanium is a heavier material than aluminum. The idea of the super-slim device is to be as lightweight and thin as possible, so utilizing a heavier material doesn't make sense. Titanium is a stronger material than aluminum, though. Perhaps Apple still remembers the drama of the iPhone 6 Plus and the Bendgate scandal that followed its release. In that context, using titanium for the iPhone 17 Air 's ultra-thin chassis sounds like a great idea. Samsung also uses titanium for the frame of the Galaxy S25 Edge. The super-slim flagship weighs 163 g, which is significantly lighter than the 190 g of the Galaxy S25 Plus, which has the same display size. The bigger change would be the iPhone 17 Pro featuring an aluminum frame. Since the iPhone X, all Pro iPhones have had either stainless steel or titanium frames. How Apple would justify such a change might be one of the more interesting things to look for during the iPhone 17 premiere, which is expected in September. Aluminum frames were already rumored for the iPhone 17 Pro models before. The iPhone 17 Air was claimed to feature a titanium-aluminum alloy, with a lower percentage of titanium. I think this rumor makes sense, especially considering other rumors about the upcoming iPhones. The Google Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly use the same old chipset, but will have a bigger battery
Google has abandoned Samsung and is switching to TSMC for future Tensor chipsets – the first, the Tensor G5, will power the Pixel 10 series and is already doing the rounds on Geekbench. The upcoming Pixel Watch 4, however, is not changing chipsets. The latest report is that Google will reuse the same chipset as on the Watch 3 and the Watch 2, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1. This 2022 chip is fabbed on a 4nm node and has four Cortex-A53 cores. We recently heard that Qualcomm is working on a Snapdragon W6, with one big Cortex- A78 core and four A55 cores, but it seems that Google has no interest in that. Instead, the company may just be biding its time until its custom Tensor chip is ready in time for the Pixel Watch 5. That's what we heard back in late 2024 and the leak indicated that the Tensor chip will have the same 1x A78 + 4x A55 setup as the W6 – that's also the same configuration as the Exynos W1000 that Samsung reused for the Galaxy Watch8 series. Back to the Google Pixel Watch 4. We've seen renders, which pointed to a thicker body – 14.3mm, up from 12.3mm. The latest info indicates that both sizes – the 45mm model code named 'kenari'/FK23 and the 41mm model code named 'meridian'/FME23 – will have larger batteries, which may explain the chunkier build. The Pixel Watch 4 41mm will have a 327mAh battery (+20mAh from the Watch 3 41mm), while the 45mm model will have a 459mAh battery (+39mAh). Those represent +7% and +9% increases, respectively. That's not much considering the W5 Gen 1 chip is not the most efficient around. Charging speeds will be increased too, but no concrete numbers have leaked yet. Besides offering a choice between 41mm and 45mm size, the Pixel Watch 4 will come in Bluetooth and 4G flavors. And it will be available in several colors with different bands ranging from two-tone leather through Active Sport band and to metal mesh bands.
