Teoh Beng Hock's family rejects MACC apology, says no justice without action on five officers

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Teoh Lee Lan, 45, sister of the late Teoh Beng Hock, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable. — Picture by Sayuti Zainudin Kuala Lumpur: The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has reportedly rejected an apology from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over Beng Hock's death 16 years ago. According to The Star, Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable for her brother's death. Advertisement 'They said they are apologising because they see our pain, but they are not surrendering the five officers we believe were involved,' she was quoted as saying at a press conference here last night. 'Their offer of a financial contribution is also shameful — we do not want money, we want the truth,' she reportedly added. According to the report, Lee Lan further criticised Azam's remarks, saying they implied that a human life could be compensated with money. Yesterday, Azam apologised to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, who died in 2009 at the building housing the commission's Selangor office. He said the MACC acknowledged the findings of past investigations, including a recent police probe that resulted in no further action, and expressed sympathy for the family's long-standing pain. Azam also said the MACC was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution for the welfare and education of Teoh's child. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 20 nabbed in ‘gay party' at Kelantan bungalow

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said three of the men were arrested for the possession of obscene material. PETALING JAYA: Police raided a bungalow in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, last month where a 'gay party' was being held, resulting in the arrest of 20 men. State police chief Yusoff Mamat said a special team was formed to surveil the event following a tip-off, Utusan Malaysia reported. The raid itself was conducted at 1am. Advertisement The 20 men were detained to give their statements as part of the investigation. Three of them were also arrested under Section 292 of the Penal Code for the possession of obscene material involving gay elements. 'There were initially more than 100 men in their 20s and 30s at the location, but that number reduced after midnight. Further checks on the bungalow led to the discovery of hundreds of condoms and HIV drugs,' Yusoff was quoted as saying. He said preliminary investigations found that no sexual activity had occurred when the bungalow was raided, although it appeared that they were 'preparing towards that direction'. 'During questioning, the detainees admitted that they were a group of gays and had held the get-together with free food while publicising the event on social media,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Emma Watson and Zoe Wanamaker banned from driving for speeding

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Watson, 35, was found driving at 38 miles per hour in a 30-mile zone in Banbury last July. - AFP pic LONDON: Two well-known actors from the 'Harry Potter' film series have been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding in separate incidents. Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, and Zoe Wanamaker, known for her role as Madame Hooch, were both penalised for exceeding speed limits in different locations. Advertisement Watson, 35, was found driving at 38 miles per hour in a 30-mile zone in Banbury last July. The actress, currently studying at Oxford University, was stopped while driving her blue Audi. Her lawyer confirmed that despite being a student, she could afford the £1,044 fine imposed by the court. Meanwhile, Wanamaker, 76, was caught driving at 46 miles per hour in a 40-mile zone on the M4 motorway in Berkshire last August. Like Watson, she received a six-month driving ban and was fined the same amount. Both cases were handled by the High Wycombe Magistrates' Court, though neither actress attended the hearings in person. The court proceedings concluded with the penalties being enforced without further dispute. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
