Industrial and economic hubs power Oman's Vision 2040 goals
According to the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), total committed investments across special economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities reached RO 21 billion by the end of 2024, a 10 per cent increase over the previous year. These figures underscore the strategic role the zones play in attracting both local and foreign investment into high-priority sectors.
Speaking at OPAZ's annual media meeting, Shaikh Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Chairman, highlighted that the zones now contribute 7.5 per cent to Oman's GDP and 11.6 per cent to non-oil activities, with exports exceeding RO 4.5 billion, accounting for 38 per cent of the Sultanate's non-oil exports.
These zones are channelling investment into industries vital to Oman Vision 2040, including pharmaceuticals, food processing, fisheries, renewable energy, and petrochemicals. In 2024, 180 projects were under negotiation, with 12 per cent being advanced in partnership with Invest Oman and the National Negotiation Team.
Environmental sustainability, a core pillar of Oman Vision 2040, is also being prioritised. The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) is establishing a renewable energy cluster, while Sur Industrial City is developing green areas under its Green Belt Project. In Sohar Free Zone, an air quality monitoring system has been launched as part of a broader environmental plan.
Job creation remains a fundamental outcome. In 2024, 3,597 Omanis were employed in projects across the zones, raising the national workforce to over 29,000, with an Omanisation rate of 37 per cent. This directly supports Vision 2040's emphasis on developing a skilled, competitive local workforce.
To enhance the business environment, OPAZ has implemented investor-friendly reforms including reduced lease rates, streamlined licensing, and digital integration with government entities aimed at improving transparency and reducing red tape.
Quality improvements are also being realised in areas such as Duqm. The Saay Commercial District is over 90 per cent complete, while the number of students in local schools has increased by 47 per cent in three years. Plans are also under way to expand green spaces and develop tourism infrastructure.
As Oman accelerates towards its 2040 aspirations, free and economic zones remain central to national progress. Under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and with OPAZ at the helm, these zones are laying the groundwork for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy turning Vision 2040 into a living reality.

Foundation stone laid for RO80mn ITC in Salalah
Salalah – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism laid the foundation stone for an integrated tourism complex (ITC) in the Januf area of Salalah on Monday, signalling a major step in efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure in Dhofar. With estimated investment of RO80mn, the project is being developed in partnership with Al Wathba Hospitality under a usufruct agreement signed in February 2025. It has been designated an ITC allowing foreign ownership and positioning it to attract international investors. Phase 1 of the development, expected to be completed in 30 months, includes a five-star hotel, 124 serviced apartments, a marina with restaurants and cafés, a beach club and a health club. Speaking at the ceremony, H E Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Tourism, said the project will support SMEs, create direct and indirect employment opportunities, and provide training and qualification programmes for Omanis in tourism and hospitality. He described the development as a significant addition to ongoing efforts to diversify the national economy and develop Dhofar as a key tourism destination. Khalid bin Abdullah al Abri, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, said the project is among the most prominent tourism investments in the governorate in terms of scale and components. He noted that the planned yacht marina would be one of the biggest in Oman and complement a fully integrated beachfront area. Pact signed to develop natural hydrogen value chain
MUSCAT: SOHAR Port and Freezone has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HYNAT SA, a pioneering Swiss company specialised in the research, exploration, and exploitation of hydrogen, to advance the development of a comprehensive natural hydrogen value chain in the Sultanate of Oman. This partnership marks a significant step toward establishing a robust hydrogen ecosystem in SOHAR, with a focus on natural hydrogen as an emerging low-carbon energy source. The collaboration will focus on the identification and assessment of natural hydrogen production areas, development of logistics corridors, and the creation of dedicated storage and processing infrastructure. It will also encompass demand mapping across industry, mobility, and logistics, while exploring export potential for this low-carbon energy source. The agreement builds on an earlier MoU signed between HYNAT and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM) in February 2025, which granted HYNAT the rights to conduct feasibility studies. The joint roadmap includes defined operational targets, and a development timeline aligned with Oman's broader clean energy transition strategy. UTAS students return from academic tour in Beijing
MUSCAT, JULY 28 The first student delegation from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) has returned to Oman after a successful academic journey to Beijing. This pioneering trip was part of the prestigious Royal Grant Programme for Student Trips, launched under the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The initiative aims to foster innovation and global exposure among Omani students through hands-on, international learning experiences. This year's itinerary spans three key destinations — Beijing and Shanghai in China, and Russia. The Beijing leg served as the inaugural chapter of the journey, offering a dynamic blend of scientific, technological and cultural immersion designed to broaden students' horizons and introduce them to global innovation landscapes. A key highlight of the visit was a field trip to the headquarters of Huawei, a global leader in information and communication technology. Students explored state-of-the-art developments in artificial intelligence, 5G networks, cloud computing, smart cities and e-learning platforms. Real-world tech projects from various global markets provided students with practical insights into the transformative power of modern technology. The delegation also experienced China's renowned high-speed rail by travelling to Tianjin aboard the iconic bullet train — cutting a two-hour journey to just 30 minutes through stunning scenery. Student Taqwa al Rawahi described it as 'an unforgettable experience', highlighting the fusion of nature and urban beauty. Raghad al Ajeeli added: 'Tianjin blends modernity and heritage - from Italian Culture Street to the illuminated Joliang Bridge. Its use of smart technologies makes it a model for sustainability.' In Tianjin, the group toured the Airbus A320 assembly plant and the BYD-D Space Center, delving into the realms of aircraft manufacturing and electric mobility. 'Visiting both factories deepened my appreciation for China's technological prowess,' said Firas al Zadjali. Cultural exposure was equally central to the program. At Beijing's historic Summer Palace, students were captivated by ancient Chinese architecture and serene landscapes. 'Walking through the Summer Palace felt like entering another era,' said Reem al Nabhani. The delegation also visited the Olympic Park — home to the 2008 Summer Olympics — where they explored iconic landmarks such as the Bird's Nest Stadium and Water Cube. Dr Janan al Eisa, Media and Documentation Officer, noted: 'Seeing these venues in person brought the Olympic legacy to life — it was truly inspiring.' Another key stop was a visit to a leading AI and voice recognition tech firm, where students interacted with experts on cutting-edge applications in speech and artificial intelligence. 'This visit gave me fresh ideas for applying AI in engineering,' said student Al Muntasir al Kalbani. Mohammed al Mayahi, Sports Activity Specialist and delegation supervisor, emphasised the long-term impact of the programme: 'These experiences help students align with Oman Vision 2040 by building innovation-driven skills. We hope they return as role models for their peers.' To balance academics with leisure, students also explored Universal Studios Beijing and local markets, gaining a holistic taste of Chinese culture. Following the success of the Beijing leg, UTAS is preparing to send student delegations to Shanghai and Russia, continuing its commitment to global engagement and transformative learning under the Royal Grant Programme.
