Cast members announced for 'Hunger Games' prequel. Who will play Haymitch and Lenore Dove?

Two new faces are going into the Hunger Games arena; and one will watch her beloved from afar.
Lionsgate is bringing Indiana University alumna Suzanne Collins ' latest novel, "Sunrise on the Reaping," to the big screen next year. This week, three key cast members were announced — including the lead character, a younger version of one of Katniss' mentors.
Here's what the studio has announced so far.
Who is playing Haymitch Abernathy in 'Sunrise on the Reaping'?
Variety reported this week that Joseph Zada would star as Haymitch, one of the male Hunger Games tributes from District 12, in the new film. Zada is credited in two upcoming streaming series: "We Were Liars" on Prime Video and "East of Eden" on Netflix.

In the original trilogy of "Hunger Games" films starring Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson played Haymitch.
Who is playing Lenore Dove Baird in 'Sunrise on the Reaping'?
In the book, Lenore Dove Baird is a member of a group of traveling musicians from District 12 who were introduced in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Actress Whitney Peak will play her in the film, according to Variety.
A character with the same last name, Lucy Gray Baird, was played by Rachel Zegler in the latest film, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." She was the first District 12 tribute to win the Hunger Games.
Peak starred in the recent reboot of "Gossip Girl" and in "Hocus Pocus 2."
Who is playing Maysilee Donner in the new 'Hunger Games' movie?
McKenna Grace will play Maysilee Donner, another District 12 tribute, Variety reported.
The actress has a long list of credits across her youth, including "Fuller House," "The Handmaid's Tale," "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and "Young Sheldon." She will be in the upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel, "Regretting You."
Where does 'Sunrise on the Reaping' fall in the 'Hunger Games' series?
The prequel falls chronologically between Collins' last release, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," and the first "Hunger Games" book. Here's the order:
"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" (2020): Takes place during the 10th Hunger Games competition and centers around a young Corialanus Snow.
"Sunrise on the Reaping" (2025): Takes place during the 25th Hunger Games, the first Quarter Quell, when twice as many tributes were required. Haymitch Abernathy is the main character.
" The Hunger Games" (2008): Takes place during the 74th Hunger Games, when Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute to replace her sister.
"Catching Fire" (2009): Takes place during the 75th Hunger Games, another Quarter Quell. This time, participants are drawn only from previous Hunger Games winners.
"Mockingjay" (2010): Takes place during the revolution that follows the Quarter Quell.
When is 'Sunrise on the Reaping,' the new Hunger Games movie, in theaters?
Lionsgate lists the film's release date as Nov. 20, 2026.

Hollywood Icon, 80, Appears in a New Movie With Son After Career Confession

Hollywood Icon, 80, Appears in a New Movie With Son After Career Confession originally appeared on Parade. Michael Douglas said he wouldn't go back to acting unless a 'special' opportunity presented itself – and it looks like the perfect project fell in his lap. The TODAY show shared the first teaser for the upcoming film Looking Through Water, a movie in which Michael, 80, will star alongside his eldest son, Cameron Douglas. In the clip, the Hollywood legend was seen in character as he chatted with a seemingly troubled young boy, who displayed a massive black eye. While sitting in a fishing boat in a pond-like body of water, dramatic clips of the movie flashed on screen, introducing Cameron, 46, to viewers. Looking Through Water follows a family's troubled dynamic, bouncing from one storyline to another – all while intertwined. Michael's character, however, will attempt to repair an estranged relationship with his son while competing in a fishing competition together. Walker Scobell, David Morse, Michael Stahl-David, Ximena Romo and Tamara Tunie will also star in the film. Looking Through Water will premiere in theatres on September 12. Michael and Cameron's onscreen collaboration marks more than two decades since they first co-starred in the 2003 film It Runs in the Family. The Fatal Attraction star welcomed Cameron with ex-wife Diandra Luker on December 13, 1978. Michael later welcomed his youngest children, Dylan Douglas and Carys Douglas, during his marriage to his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. The news of Michael's new movie may come as a shock to some fans, as the Wall Street actor recently shared that he is slowly closing the curtain on his acting career. "I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,' Michael told Variety in July of his battle with stage 4 cancer following his 2010 diagnosis. 'I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back. I say I'm not retired because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, no." 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Hollywood Icon, 80, Appears in a New Movie With Son After Career Confession first appeared on Parade on Aug 4, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared. 'The Blair Witch Project' Franchise Receives Positive Update

While The Blair Witch Project did spawn a franchise following its successful theatrical release in 1999, the follow-ups never quite captured the same atmosphere or momentum that made the original a worldwide sensation. Fortunately, a major positive update has been given regarding The Blair Witch Project and its future from one of the original movie's stars. The cast behind The Blair Witch Project were instrumental for the original film's success, though they were never properly compensated or included with the franchise's future. It looks like this could change, as original star Michael C. Williams has discussed some exciting developments with the franchise under Blumhouse and Lionsgate. As shared below via Instagram, Williams chose this month – which marks the 26th anniversary of the original film – to share the good news. As fans know, Williams and his co-stars Heather Donahue and Joshua Leonard, have struggled to make themselves heard by the studios involved with the franchise. It seems that finally happened: 'In a world where it increasingly seems as though no one listens to one another any longer, I'm beyond grateful to report that Lionsgate and Jason Blum/Blumhouse actually did listen. While I won't get into the details, I can say that after 26 years, I finally feel like a valued contributor to the world of The Blair Witch Project (though, in fairness, you fans have always made me feel that way!) and I truly appreciate these folks hearing us out and coming to the table. They proved to be thoughtful and responsive to our concerns and it is important to me to acknowledge this with public gratitude and appreciation towards them.' Regarding the franchise's future, details were scarce, but it sounds like things are moving forward and Williams seems to be involved: 'I am excited for what's to come next in the Blair Witch universe. I've found the map and we're definitely moving forward.' Here's the complete statement featuring his update on the Blair Witch franchise: Hopefully we'll have more details soon. Fans of The Blair Witch Project have been eager to see whether or not Hollywood can recreate the magic of the original film, and similarly they've hoped the original cast could be part of it, so perhaps we'll finally get that opportunity. As always, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.
