
Uprooted businesses await monetary relief
For instance, Naeem Aamir, a businessman uprooted during the construction of the Metro Bus, revealed that he had inherited several shops alongside the Ferozepur Road. However, even after the passage of several years, he was still struggling to receive the promised compensation. 'The monetary compensation given by the government is like salt in flour. Even today, we have to plead for our money and have almost become shuttlecocks between the development agency and the project,' claimed Aamir.
Similarly, Riaz Ahmed, a small trader, who used to own a shop in Anarkali, was uprooted during the construction of the Orange Metro Train Station. 'I used to work as a used-cloth merchant and owned a small shop. The government did not offer proper compensation for my loss. Money was only given for the land, while no relief was given for the damage to my business, which had to be shut down eventually. Even today, I am making rounds of various government offices to get some help,' explained Ahmed.
As per information obtained by the Express Tribune, more than 22 underpasses, 17 flyovers, a ring road spanning more than 100 kilometers in length, a 28-kilometer Orange Line train and a 27-kilometer Metro Bus have been constructed in Lahore, the largest city of the province during the past two decades. While these projects have resulted in development work worth trillions of rupees, they have also caused financial hardship for hundreds of families.
According to Sohail Hanif Bhandara, an urban developer, the government has a reputation of giving stepmother treatment to the business community and residential areas during the construction of big development projects. 'Although big business entities are paid well, small businesses are often neglected. Therefore, before starting any big development project, efforts should be made to bypass areas with small businesses or mini residential schemes on the route. This process will not only reduce the cost of the project but will also ensure that the common man is not affected,' implored Bhandara.
On the other hand, Rai Nasir Jamil, a land acquisition collector, claimed that whenever the government acquired any land, it first evaluated the value of the land and then offered compensation to businesses as per the government's standard formula. 'The standard formula is that whenever a project affecting residential, urban and rural populations is announced, the cost of the project is calculated only after determining its parameters. Sometimes there are irregularities in the valuation. But this can be settled by the complainant later on,' said Jamil.
As per the claims of the government, a special package was given to underprivileged families who had been living on the land of various government departments for more than 60 years and did not have ownership rights. Families living in one room in a multi-storey building were given assistance of Rs1 million per household. Land compensation for residential houses located in Kapoorthala House, Kacha Lake Road and Edward Road was Rs.2.5 million per marla, while the compensation for commercial land was Rs3.5 million per marla. One hundred families were living in the Bengali Building while 58 families were living in the Maharaja Building.

KE CEO says consumers to face load-shedding till they pay bills
K-Electric Chief Executive Officer Moonis Abdullah Alvi said the power utility's consumers will continue experiencing load-shedding until they pay bills. Speaking at Express Tribune podcast, the K-Electric chief said the utility's ATNC loss is less than the average loss across the country at 28 per cent. Besides, the efficiency of power plants has improved from 30 per cent on aggregate basis to 45 per cent. He said the aggregate technical and commercial loss has slumped to 20 per cent from 42 per cent that was at the time of privatization. "We have spent around $4 billion on generation, transmission and distribution," said Alvi, adding the investment has made the company efficient. To a question, he said people come on roads to protest against the load-shedding and they will keep coming as long as they are facing power shutdown. He added that power consumers would keep facing load-shedding unless they pay for the electricity they consume or stop stealing electricity. The K-Electric CEO highlighted that the electricity in Karachi is supplied through 2,200 feeders. Of them, 70 per cent feeders are exempted from load-shedding. The rest of the areas face load-shedding due to Kunda connections. "We are unable to remove Kunda connections from those areas despite our concerted efforts. Even, when we removed them, they were reconnected to the supply lines," said Alvi, adding, "It is not possible for us to provide free electricity". He said the regulator has set K-Electric tariff at Rs40 per unit while the tariff for the other Discos is determined at Rs33 per unit. The K-E consumers are paying for per unit electricity at par power consumers across the country. Alvi noted the generation cost of K-Electric is Rs32 while the generation cost for the Discos across the country is Rs26, which includes nuclear and hydel power.

Turkish delegation arrives in Pakistan on official visit

During the visit, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will express Turkey's desire to deepen ties in every field and offer Ankara's support in taking steps toward regional peace, the source said. Fidan will stress the countries "need to strengthen their cooperation in the defence industry," the source said.

CM orders more e-buses for southern Punjab
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the provision of more electric buses to the districts in South Punjab and further directed that remote areas should be given priority in the provision of electric buses. The Chief Minister chaired a special meeting during which the Transport Department briefed on its projects and the progress being made on the electric bus project. The CM emphasised, 'The culture of always giving every new facility to big cities must be changed. We will bring rural areas at par with the major urban cities.' She directed that 240 electric buses should be given on a priority basis to 24 districts. In the first phase, 240 e-buses will be provided to relatively underdeveloped districts. Between August and October, 500 e-buses will be provided for Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi. From November to December, 600 additional electric buses will arrive in Punjab. The CM highlighted, 'Under the Punjab Clean Air Program, 400 electric buses will be provided to Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Lahore. A detailed review was conducted of the Gujranwala BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) project. In order to connect the entire city and suburban areas, 80 feeder buses will be launched. On the 22-kilometer-long BRT system from Rahwali to Eminabad, 28 stations will be established. The proposal to extend the Gujranwala BRT route was also reviewed. The Gujranwala BRT system will provide two-way transportation after every 8 minutes. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed that traffic along the Gujranwala BRT route should be managed through a smart traffic control solution. For this project, 4 electric bus depots will be established in Gujranwala. In the meeting, progress was also reviewed on Orange Line and Red Line transport systems in Faisalabad. The Red Line will be 23.4 kilometres long, with 24 stations, and is expected to transport more than 185,000 passengers. The Orange Line will be 29 kilometres long, with 21 stations, and is expected to transport over 111,000 passengers. On the Chief Minister's direction, the route from FIEDMC to Salami Chowk has also been included in the project. The Chief Minister directed the Transport Department to immediately start all public welfare projects, and further directed that e-bus routes should be determined based on public commuting needs. She outlined,' We want to provide buses based on actual public needs. Our thinking should be focused solely for the welfare of people. All districts are equal to me.
