UAE: Fujairah Police step up action against jaywalking, issue reminder of Dh400 fine

Khaleej Times20-05-2025
The General Command of Fujairah Police has issued a firm warning to pedestrians against crossing roads from unauthorised areas, stressing that such actions endanger their lives and the safety of other road users.
The authority also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching pedestrian crossings, particularly zebra crossings, to ensure the safety of all.
As part of this public safety drive, police reminded residents that the Federal Traffic and Road Law prohibits pedestrians from crossing roads outside designated areas, with violators facing a fine of Dh400.
The warning comes as part of the force's ongoing efforts to enforce traffic rules, reduce pedestrian accidents, and enhance road safety for all. The latest awareness campaign, launched under the theme 'Pedestrians Have the Right to Cross Safely,' aims to educate both pedestrians and drivers on safe road behaviours.
The campaign, which runs for a month, is part of the Traffic and Patrols Department's 2025 operational plan. Colonel Saleh Mohammed Abdullah Al Dhanhani, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Fujairah Police, said the campaign focuses on addressing repeated violations by pedestrians who put themselves at risk by crossing from non-designated areas.
'We are witnessing a disturbing trend where pedestrians ignore safe crossing points, stepping into traffic from unsafe locations. This puts their lives and those of others in grave danger,' said Col. Al Dhanhani.
'At the same time, drivers must approach crossings carefully, slow down, and give way to pedestrians.' Col. Al Dhanhani stressed that ensuring pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. The campaign also seeks to raise awareness among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people of determination, urging them to use footbridges, tunnels, and zebra crossings.
Fujairah Police said the initiative supports the Ministry of Interior's strategic vision to make UAE roads safer and reduce traffic fatalities and injuries caused by negligence or unsafe behaviours. The police reiterated the need for cooperation between motorists and pedestrians, adding that enforcement of traffic laws, including fines for violations, is essential to deter reckless behavior and protect lives.

UAE summer: Fujairah Police warn parents against leaving kids unattended in vehicles

Fujairah Police launched a new traffic awareness campaign urging parents and guardians never to leave children alone inside vehicles — a move prompted by growing concerns over child safety during the summer months. The initiative, titled Your Children Are Your Responsibility – Don't Leave Them in the Vehicle Unattended, is part of the Ministry of Interior's third-quarter national safety drive, Summer Without Accidents. It addresses the serious risks children face when left unattended in parked cars, including suffocation and heatstroke due to rapidly rising interior temperatures — especially in the UAE's extreme summer heat. The goal is to promote a sense of community responsibility in preventing such accidents and to help achieve the highest levels of safety and protection for all, especially children, according to the authority. Colonel Saleh Mohammed Abdullah Al Dhanhani, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Fujairah Police, stressed that the campaign's core message is to raise awareness among parents and drivers about the importance of never leaving children alone in vehicles under any circumstances. He also stressed the importance of following safety guidelines and complying with traffic laws, noting that the responsibility for protecting children is a shared one — starting with families and extending to all segments of society. Al-Dhanhani added that the department is committed to using a variety of awareness tools, most notably field messages and electronic flyers, in addition to collaborating with media outlets to disseminate warning messages. Dubai also highlighted the grave danger of leaving children unattended inside vehicles, warning that this behaviour can result in suffocation and death within minutes. In the UAE, under Article 35 of the Wadeema Law, leaving children unattended in vehicles is a punishable offence. Depending on the severity and circumstances, offenders may face a fine of up to Dh5,000 and/or imprisonment. In cases involving endangerment to life and safety, penalties can rise to Dh10,000 and/or jail time, based on the judge's discretion.
