Microsoft will halt new Office features for Windows 10 in 2026

The Verge2 days ago
Microsoft has quietly revealed that it will stop adding new features to Office apps (Microsoft 365) for Windows 10 users in August 2026. While security updates will remain in place for Office apps running on Windows 10 until October 2028, Microsoft will cut off new feature support gradually next year.
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users will stop getting new features on Windows 10 in August 2026, alongside Current Channel users on the business side. Microsoft then plans to cut off new Office features for monthly enterprise channel users on Windows 10 on October 13th 2026, followed by the same for semi-annual enterprise channel users on January 12th 2027.
Microsoft was forced to perform a U-Turn on security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 earlier this year, but at the time it didn't reveal that new features would be cut off starting in 2026. The change means you'll have to upgrade to Windows 11 to get the latest Microsoft 365 features. Windows 10 goes end of life on October 14th, and Microsoft has committed to delivering security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 until October 10th, 2028.
Microsoft has been trying to convince Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 ahead of the end of support cutoff in October, but there are still millions of devices running the OS — despite Windows 11 finally overtaking Windows 10 as the most used desktop OS. Consumers can also extend security updates support for another year, free of charge if you're willing to enable Windows Backup.

Honda & Nissan in Discussion to Co-Develop Advanced Auto Software

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. HMC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. NSANY are in discussions to jointly develop and share a foundational software platform for advanced vehicle control systems, per sources. The move is part of their effort to catch up with leading U.S. and Chinese automakers in the growing field of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).The two companies aim to introduce vehicles utilizing the new software in the latter half of the decade. As SDVs become more prominent in the global automotive landscape, they require massive data inputs for both development and ongoing operation, making strategic collaboration crucial for accelerating innovation and reducing and several Chinese automakers currently lead in the SDV space, while Toyota and Mazda are also considering adopting shared software strategies. Honda and Nissan's ongoing discussions mark the latest attempt at collaboration, following the end of previous merger talks in February after Nissan declined to become a Honda initiating a feasibility study in March 2024, both automakers have been evaluating potential collaborations in software development and EV charging infrastructure. However, Honda has indicated that it still plans to launch electric vehicles equipped with its proprietary software beginning in separate news, Nissan may begin manufacturing pickup trucks for Honda at its U.S. plants under a proposed strategic agreement. This would allow Honda to diversify its U.S. vehicle lineup, where it currently has limited presence in the pickup segment and mitigate the financial impact of new tariffs. For Nissan, the deal could improve factory utilization, which remains below break-even levels, and help offset declining sales due to its lack of competitive hybrid two companies are currently discussing this potential partnership. Both automakers view the United States as a crucial market, though recent tariff increases on Japanese imports have intensified pressure. The levies are projected to reduce Honda's operating profit by ¥650 billion and Nissan's by up to ¥450 billion in fiscal 2025. A manufacturing agreement between the two could enhance profitability for both firms. Lucid Motors will roll out hands-free highway driving this month

Lucid Motors is set to roll out a software update on July 30 that will enable hands-free highway driving on its Air sedans, a major step forward for the company's advanced driver assistance system. The rollout will put Lucid Motors on a short list of companies that have made hands-free driving possible in the United States. Ford has a system called BlueCruise, General Motors has Super Cruise, and Mercedes-Benz has Drive Pilot, although it's not as widely available. In the right conditions and in cars equipped with an in-cabin camera, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can also be used hands-free. Lucid says the hands-free update is only coming to the Air sedans for now, with an update rolling out to owners of the new Gravity SUV slated for later this year. (The company has barely started shipping Gravity SUVs anyway, with Cox Automotive reporting this week that only five were delivered in the second quarter.) The system is also only available to customers who bought an Air equipped with the $2,500 'Dream Drive Pro' package, which includes a 'comprehensive suite of 32 sensors' that includes lidar, radar, cameras, and ultrasonics. The company declined to say how many customers have purchased the Dream Drive Pro package to date. Lucid has delivered around 20,000 cars since 2021. Drivers will have to keep their eyes on the road ahead and be ready to take over at any moment, much like the competing driver assistance systems. Lucid says this will be done with an infrared camera-based system in the car that sits on top of the steering column. They'll also only be able to use the hands-free system on 'compatible' pre-mapped divided highways. Update: Added information about pre-mapped highways and the system's infrared camera.

General Motors, LGES to Upgrade Spring Hill Site to Make LFP Batteries

General Motors Company GM and LG Energy Solution's (LGES) joint venture, Ultium Cells, is upgrading its Spring Hill, TN, plant to manufacture more affordable electric vehicle (EV) battery cells. These new batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is less expensive than traditional lithium-ion batteries since they don't rely on costly materials like cobalt and nickel. While LFP cells offer lower energy density, they are safer, longer-lasting and becoming increasingly competitive in terms of driving range, especially in China, where they power more than 80% of Kurt Kelty, GM's VP of batteries, propulsion and sustainability, the Spring Hill upgrade will allow for U.S.-based production of LFP batteries, complementing GM's current high-nickel offerings and future lithium-manganese-based batteries, helping to expand the company's EV currently offers 12 EV models, ranging in price from about $35,000 to more than $300,000. The upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and next-generation Chevy Bolt EV will feature LFP batteries, though GM hasn't confirmed if these battery packs will be built at Spring Hill. The new Bolt is expected to start production later this year and reach buyers in early 2026, well before LFP production begins locally, which is targeted for late 2027. The LFP version of the Silverado EV will reportedly offer around 350 miles of range and reduce vehicle cost by $6, Spring Hill plant was initially part of a $2.3 billion investment announced in 2021, and although the new upgrade builds on this partnership, no additional investment figures were provided. Meanwhile, GM continues to develop advanced battery technologies, including lithium-manganese-rich chemistries for large EVs, slated to launch around early 2028. It is also exploring silicon anodes and solid-state batteries in its Michigan R&D LFP batteries originated in the United States at the University of Texas at Austin, their mass adoption and technological advancements have been led by Chinese manufacturers like BYD and CATL. Korean companies, such as LG, have been slower to enter the LFP space but are now accelerating efforts. LFP technology is also gaining traction in the United States. Ford is developing it at its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan and Tesla has expanded its Nevada LFP facility to support energy storage. Currently, the GM-LGES joint venture is North America's largest battery cell manufacturer.
