Microsoft Confirms New Upgrade Deadlines—‘Move To Windows 11'

It's time to move, Microsoft warns. Around 700 million PC owners are now in Windows Limboland. Microsoft's u-turn on killing Windows 10 support in October has been quashed, and it seems there's now a free 12-month extension. But it's not that simple, as Microsoft has just warned. The Windows-maker has now told Microsoft 365 users that 'although apps such as Word will continue to work after Windows 10 reaches end of support, using an unsupported operating system can cause performance and reliability issues.' And here's the blurry new line. General Windows 10 support is still effectively ending in October, that hasn't changed. The extensions are only intended to ease the transition. Microsoft tells enterprise users that 'if your organization is using Microsoft 365 Apps on devices running Windows 10, those devices should move to Windows 11.' This isn't as dire as it might sound. 'To help maintain security while you transition to Windows 11,' Microsoft says it will 'continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support.' That means you should avoid the worst downsides all the way through to October 2028. But this will be a static version of the apps you're paying for. Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 'will only receive feature updates' until the following dates: That means major changes before the end of the imminent 12-month support extension, which aligns with other warnings from Microsoft and even government agencies that the 700 million users still on Windows 10 should take the free upgrade now. At least most of them should. There's an indeterminate number of PCs — somewhere between 240 and 400 million — that are not eligible to upgrade. And the focus should now be on those to find a way to maintain secure systems.

Microsoft will halt new Office features for Windows 10 in 2026

Microsoft has quietly revealed that it will stop adding new features to Office apps (Microsoft 365) for Windows 10 users in August 2026. While security updates will remain in place for Office apps running on Windows 10 until October 2028, Microsoft will cut off new feature support gradually next year. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users will stop getting new features on Windows 10 in August 2026, alongside Current Channel users on the business side. Microsoft then plans to cut off new Office features for monthly enterprise channel users on Windows 10 on October 13th 2026, followed by the same for semi-annual enterprise channel users on January 12th 2027. Microsoft was forced to perform a U-Turn on security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 earlier this year, but at the time it didn't reveal that new features would be cut off starting in 2026. The change means you'll have to upgrade to Windows 11 to get the latest Microsoft 365 features. Windows 10 goes end of life on October 14th, and Microsoft has committed to delivering security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 until October 10th, 2028. Microsoft has been trying to convince Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 ahead of the end of support cutoff in October, but there are still millions of devices running the OS — despite Windows 11 finally overtaking Windows 10 as the most used desktop OS. Consumers can also extend security updates support for another year, free of charge if you're willing to enable Windows Backup.

Microsoft Confirms New Update Failure For Windows Users

Another update fail for May Here we go again. Hot on the heels of its emergency update earlier in the month after a failed mandatory security update, Microsoft has confirmed another update fail, advising 'we are investigating this issue and will provide more information when it is available.' While the last update was for Windows 10 users, this time its the turn of Windows 11 to await some special, remedial treatment.'We are investigating reports of the May 13, 2025 Windows security update (KB5058405) failing to install on some Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 devices,' the company posted this week. Microsoft warns users may see 'the following recovery error: Your PC/Device needs to be repaired The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.' This driver issue has error code: 0xc0000098.' The company explains 'the file (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a critical Windows system driver that enables Windows to manage hardware resources and power states. Note: There are also reports of this same error occurring with a different file name.' This primarily affects enterprise users. Microsoft says while some physical devices are affected, the failure mainly hits virtual environments, 'including Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop [and] on-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V.' The emergency update earlier in the month followed confirmed reports that Windows 10, users were being hit with BitLocker Recovery screens when trying to install May's security update. 'Windows 10 might repeatedly display the BitLocker recovery screen at startup,' the company warned, confirming an out of bounds update. The likelihood is we'll see something similar this time, albeit it's too early to say how widespread an issue this is and whether that will get worse. We have already seen Microsoft release the KB5061977 out-of-band update for Windows 11 this month.
