Huddersfield handed seventh straight loss by Catalans
Huddersfield Giants' dismal start to the season continued as they slipped to a seventh successive defeat at the hands of Catalans Dragons.The home side took the lead when Jacob Gagai broke through two attempted tackles to get the ball down but the visitors quickly hit back through Tariq Sims' score from Luke Keary's grubber kick.The game turned in the French side's favour when they were awarded an eight-point try for Leo Darrelatour's effort and Sam Hewitt was sin-binned for kicking out at the debutant in the act of scoring.Julian Bousquet caught a high kick on the bounce and then Bayley Sironen broke through to extend Les Dracs' advantage in the opening five minutes of the second half. Jake Bibby gave the Giants some hope, but Paul Seguier scored after a great passing move on the last tackle.The injury-hit hosts battled on gamely and Sam Halsall grabbed a high George Flanagan kick in the corner before Tevita Pangai Junior barged over for the away team for the game's final score in the last few minutes.Victory for the Challenge Cup semi-finalists was a third in four games as they look to move on from their own slow start to the year.
Giants head coach Luke Robinson had called his side's lengthy injury list "horrific" in his news conference before the game and things went from bad to worse when they lost young prop Fenton Rogers in the first 10 minutes of the game.Gagai's determined effort had put the home side in front after that but that was about as good as it got for them.Robinson's men did not help themselves when Hewitt was shown a yellow card for a petulant kick out at Darrelatour as he touched down and the French side made the most of their extra man with two tries while he was off the field.Huddersfield did manage two successful captain's challenges in the final 10 minutes but by then the game was over as a genuine contest.They travel to West Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Friday (17:30 BST), while Catalans will look to continue their improved form when they host financially-troubled Salford (18:00) the following day.

Mets look for three-game sweep against Giants
July 27 - The New York Mets and host San Francisco Giants hope to put new toys from their impressive bullpens on display for a national-television audience Sunday night when they wrap up a three-game series. The Mets have outpitched the Giants in winning the first two games of the set, limiting the hosts to a total of two runs while walking away with 8-1 and 2-1 victories. While Mets starters Clay Holmes and David Peterson gave up just one run apiece, New York's bullpen has been stingier against the Giants. Huascar Brazoban, Rico Garcia and Jose Castillo combined to allow three hits over four shutout innings, to finish Friday's win. Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz served up just one hit over three scoreless innings to preserve Saturday's one-run lead. The Mets rank 10th in baseball in reliever ERA, yet felt compelled to add to their bullpen corps Friday, dealing two minor-leaguers to acquire left-hander Gregory Soto from the Orioles. The two-time All-Star is expected to be available Sunday. "It's a big arm," Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns explained to reporters Saturday. "He's pitched in leverage spots. We were looking to help complement our bullpen from the left side. It's not always easy to do that this time of year." If Soto makes his Mets debut in San Francisco, it would come in relief of right-hander Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.79 ERA), who has been limited to 67 and 73 pitches in two starts since returning from a strained right hamstring. Senga allowed four runs in seven innings in those games, but the Mets have won them both - 7-5 over the Angels and 8-3 over the Royals - running their winning streak to six in his starts. The 32-year-old has faced the Giants just once previously in his career, that having been in April of 2023. He got the win, allowing four runs in five innings in a 9-4 victory. Gage, who made his major-league debut in relief for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022, will be making his first big-league start after 25 relief appearances. He pitched six times for the Detroit Tigers earlier this season, not allowing any runs in 5 2/3 innings, before getting designated for assignment and becoming a free agent. One day later, he was scooped up by the Giants, for whom he's pitched three times, including the seventh inning in Friday's series opener. He's allowed just one hit and no runs in his four innings as a Giant. While San Francisco contemplates long-term solutions to their starting-pitcher openings, manager Bob Melvin was glad to be able to band-aid the situation from within a relief corps that has been the second-best in all of baseball this season, pitching to a 3.18 ERA. Liverpool handed positive Alexander Isak transfer update - 'Only see him joining'
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international said to have asked to leave the Magpies this summer Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has tipped Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to make the switch to Anfield this summer, claiming discussions have been ongoing for over 12 months. The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Swedish striker for several weeks but appeared to cool their interest when Newcastle refused to do business earlier in the window. In response, Liverpool pivoted to Hugo Ekitike, signing the French forward in a £79million deal. But now it appears Isak is pushing for an exit, with the 25-year-old telling Newcastle his wants to explore his options. As such, the door has been reopened, and Liverpool could be set to pounce. Isak has opted out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia while his future gets sorted ahead of what could be a British transfer record departure from St James' Park. The Magpies are reportedly holding their ground, insisting on a valuation of more than £150m if they are to consider selling him. With the expected exits of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, combined with growing interest in Luis Diaz, Liverpool are believed to still be targeting new attackers before the transfer window closes, and Isak remains their top target. Collymore, who scored 35 goals for Liverpool, is confident the move will go ahead. "I can only see Alexander Isak joining Liverpool if he does leave Newcastle, which is now expected," he wrote in his column for CaughtOffside. "I think this has been something that's been ongoing probably for 12 months or more. I think the expectation from Newcastle was that it was going to be next season that other clubs were going to bid. "A lot of fans will want him to be sold abroad, but it doesn't work like that. If the player says that they're going to down tools unless you let me go to this specific club, it's very, very difficult for the club." The addition of Ekitike pushes Liverpool's total summer outlay beyond £265m, and should Isak arrive, the overall investment would likely top £400m. Collymore explained the reasoning behind the club's aggressive spending. He continued: "With Liverpool, I know that there probably will be some room for Diaz and or Nunez to go. But still, at the moment, if they were to get Isak across the line, you've got Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez, Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike, and potentially Isak. That's six top-quality front players. "So for me, it just says that Liverpool now are realising that if they're going to stay top of the Premier League, if they're going to continue to win Champions Leagues, but more importantly, win domestic leagues in the manner that Manchester City have done, they have to accept that Man City, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal are going to continue to spend as more and more money pours into the Premier League. And I think that FSG have realised that they've got to do the same."
