Angels continue youth movement, call up 2B Christian Moore

Reuters13-06-2025
June 13 - The Los Angeles Angels called up top prospect Christian Moore for the first time, adding the second baseman in advance of a three-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
Outfielder Matthew Lugo already was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake, while right-hander Shaun Anderson was designated for assignment Friday to open a 40-man roster spot. Right-hander Sam Bachman replaced Anderson on the active roster.
Moore, 22, was the eighth overall selection in last year's draft out of Tennessee and was batting a combined .279 with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 54 games at Double- and Triple-A.
The Angels have been aggressive in calling up high college draft picks to the major leagues. Starting shortstop Zach Neto was drafted in the first round in 2022 and made his major league debut in April of 2023. Starting first baseman Nolan Schanuel was a first-round pick in 2023 and made his debut a month later.
Lugo, 24, made his debut May 9 and batted .238 with three home runs and six RBIs in 17 games.
Anderson, 30, had a 7.59 ERA in six relief appearances this season, while Bachman, 25, is up for the first time since 2023 when he went 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 relief appearances.

Colts RB Salvon Ahmed carted off practice field

August 3 - Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed sustained an apparent severe injury to his right leg during practice on Sunday and was carted off the practice field. The severity of the injury was not immediately known for Ahmed, who was injured after being dragged down from behind by undrafted safety Trey Washington. Practice immediately was stopped after the tackle as trainers rushed to Ahmed. They placed his leg in an air cast while Washington could be seen being consoled by his teammates. Ahmed, 26, last played in an NFL game in 2023. He spent last season on the practice squads of the Denver Broncos and Colts. Ahmed has 163 carries for 593 yards and five touchdowns in 38 career games (four starts) for the Miami Dolphins. --Field Level Media

NBA legend Damian Lillard takes shock new job after suffering Achilles tear

NBA star Damian Lillard has taken over as general manager at his former college while he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon. Lillard is a nine-time All-star who last month signed a three-year $42million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. But rather than spend next season on the sidelines, Lillard has accepted a job as the general manager at his alma mater, Weber State. The 35-year-old spent four seasons at Weber State in Utah before being drafted sixth overall by Portland in 2012. He joined the Bucks in 2023 and remained there until July, when he was waived. Lillard had helped Milwaukee reach the NBA playoffs last season. But he tore his left Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the first round of the postseason. Lillard underwent surgery in May and is expected to miss the entire 2025-26 season. A legacy continues in Ogden. Wildcat legend Damian Lillard is officially joining Weber State Men's Basketball as the new General Manager. Dame is stepping into a leadership role that will help shape the future of Wildcat hoops. A new era begins now. #WeberStateGreat #DameTime — Weber State Men's Basketball (@WeberStateMBB) August 3, 2025 Lillard is already a rapper alongside his NBA career - under the stage name Dame D.O.L.L.A. - and now he will work in the front office, too. The 35-year-old will 'shape the future of Wildcat basketball... (as) a key advisor and mentor to the team as it looks to compete at the highest level,' Weber State said. As GM, Lillard is set to 'work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance.' The basketball legend announced his new career while hosting an alumni game at Weber State. 'My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me,' Lillard said, per the Ogden Standard-Examiner. 'I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about.' The Weber State Wildcats haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2016. They went 12-22 last season. 'I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State,' Lillard said in a statement.

Bronzed Brady: Patriots finally to unveil QB statue on Friday

August 3 - The long-awaited statue of Tom Brady, delayed due to scheduling issues, finally will be unveiled Friday outside of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced in June 2024 that the team would be erecting the 12-foot statue during that season. However, when Brady's new employer, Fox Sports, changed plans to send the retired quarterback and its No. 1 broadcast team to Gillette on a game day, the statue dedication was put on hold. Now, a short ceremony will be held Friday ahead of the Patriots' preseason game against the Washington Commanders. Space constraints will allow only limited viewing, but the ceremony will be screened on the videoboards inside the stadium, ESPN reported. Kraft and Brady are expected to speak. "We've had it in storage for over a year. We had hoped to do it a year ago, but Tommy is so busy. It was just hard to find a time," Kraft told Kay Adams on the "Up & Adams Show" last week. "When he got his announcing job with Fox -- by the way, I think he's off the charts with what he's doing. How lucky are we to have the 199th pick [in the 2000 NFL Draft] be the greatest player to every play in the over 100-year history of the NFL? He played for us and he's just a great human being. We are excited to honor him before the game next Friday." It will be a nice culmination to a week of birthday celebrations for Brady, who turned 48 on Sunday. Brady led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships during his tenure in New England from 2000-19. Last June, Kraft said the Brady statue will be the only one in the plaza. "(The statue) will stand alone in the plaza outside of the Hall of Fame to symbolize his position, not as the greatest in franchise history, but as the greatest in all of NFL history," Kraft said. Brady was a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player who holds the league records for completions (7,753), pass attempts (12,050), passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). He added his record seventh Super Bowl championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 season. --Field Level Media
