Ukrainian mum's children's book inspired by move to Isle of Man
Ms Brykailo said it had been "so hard emotionally, physically and morally" to make the decision to leave Kiev at the beginning of the conflict."Seeing so much change around us was a horrifying feeling and it changed our lives into before and after," she said."There was so much we had to leave behind, our families and our things."Arriving on island using the Isle of Man Homes for Ukraine scheme, she said her host family and other residents had made her "experience here truly magical"."People have been so welcoming and nice to us," she said.
In the tale Veronika uses a map given to her by her mother to explore the island's "treasures", such as the steam train, Castle Rushen and Cafe Lingo, which supports residents whose first language is not English.Ms Brykailo said: "Initially the story was meant to be written just for Veronika, to make sure she remembers the people who were around her and everyone who's treated us so well."They included teachers and pupils at Arbory Primary School who "learned a few words in Ukrainian" to make the then five-year-old Veronika "feel so welcome", she said.It was that new Manx support network, which also included their host family, that convinced her to share the story with other readers.
The illustrator said while it was inspired by the family moving to the island and leaving behind the conflict, it was also about "people moving and the big changes it brings into their lives"."But it does get better in the end in this book, and with time you do get that feeling of home," she added.The 13-page books, which were printed in Ukraine, have been stocked in two Manx bookshops.

Savant expounded to the outlet about his connection to Fox through McKeon - and how it tied into his Southern California roots. 'I grew up in Burbank, California, and I went to school with Philip McKeon and Nancy McKeon – Nancy McKeon from Facts of Life and Phil McKeon from Alice,' Savant said. 'And we were dear friends.' Savant said that he didn't tell Fox about his connection with McKeon, 59, specifically in an effort not to bother the star. 'I just wanted to do my job and be professional, but I had not said anything, said Savant, who also is known for playing Tom Scavo on the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives. Savant said that a week into production, Fox figured out the connection and confronted him about it. 'He went home and Nancy asked, "Who's in the movie with you? Let me see the call sheet." And she said, "Doug Savant? We were family friends."' Savant added, 'One day, Michael comes to work, he says, "Why didn't you tell me that?" He was upset with me that I had not told him.' After that, a fast friendship formed, according to Savant, who said that he 'had a great time' working with the beloved actor on Teen Wolf. Savant said that he looks back with nostalgia on his work on the motion picture: 'I have such great memories from that film.' He added of the movie's longevity: ' The movie has had a stunning lifetime, and people love it. 'They made sequels, and it resonated. So I'm just grateful to have been a small part of it. Savant said the movie was on TV while he was working on a new project and jarred his nostalgia. He recalled: 'The craft service person would play movies, and he puts on Teen Wolf. And there I was doing my job on a new show, but watching Teen Wolf in the craft service trailer.' Fox in 1985 met actress Tracy Pollan, who worked with him on Family Ties, but 'their relationship remained platonic, however, as they were both dating other people at the time,' People reported. They commenced dating after working together again on the 1988 movie Bright Lights, Big City, and married that same year. The Back To The Future star was 29 in 1991 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and went public with the information in 1998. Poems inspired by Manx patron saint to be revealed at festival
A series of new poems are set to be revealed as part of a festival celebrating the "the story and heritage" of the patron saint of the Isle of was expelled from Ireland by St Patrick and landed on the Manx coast - off Maughold Head - in about AD450, bringing Christianity with Manx Bard Michael Manning, who was selected to be the inaugural poet in residence for St Maughold's Week, will perform seven new pieces of work inspired by the tale and the area in the north of the Dr Ian Faulds said the festival organisers had been "looking for a different way of marking the celebration to put Maughold and the patron saint on the map". "It's part of our Manx story and heritage, and something we ought to be proud to celebrate", he Manning said his new pieces had been "written in a variety of styles and on a variety of themes".He said they had been inspired by Maughold's story of "arriving poor and penniless" in a boat, and his conversion story, but some would also reflect on the "beautiful surroundings" of the readings will be given at a garden party on Saturday and during a supper on 31 July - the official day for the saint.
