"If Runs Are Being Leaked...": Mohammed Siraj Asked Tough Questions By Ravichandran Ashwin

NDTVa day ago

Mohammed Siraj had a poor outing in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. On the surface that had no help for bowlers, the right-arm pacer struggled to pick wickets and also leaked runs at an economy of 4.05. Siraj bowled 27 overs in the first innings and picked up two wickets while leaking 122 runs. During the second innings, he bowled 14 overs and gave away 51 runs while failing to pick a single wicket. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the pacer to understand his role.
"My only question to Siraj is... can you dry up the run flow? You don't have to pick up wickets. But can you not give away 4-5 runs every over? If runs are being leaked, then you have to bring Bumrah back into the attack. How many dams will Bumrah be able to construct? " Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Jasprit Bumrah was the standout India bowler during England's first innings, picking up a five-wicket haul. Krishna too accounted for three wickets, but he leaked runs at an economy of 6.40.
"Also, he gets tired, and his spells are pushed, and by then, partnerships are forged. Or you'd have to go with Jadeja, who has to step in and stem the flow of runs. Prasidh is playing for the first time, and he is inexperienced. So Siraj has to play the bankable role. Remember how Morne Morkel used to bowl 2/43 in 20 overs? That should be his role. In Bazball, you could go for 2/58, I guess. Siraj has to play that role, and if he is effective in it, then it would make a huge difference," said Ashwin.
"I agree that wicket-taking is important in Test cricket. But in Test cricket, you also bowl for one another. Ishant Sharma used to do it wonderfully. He played the Morkel role very well. He would hold the pressure on one end, and would have given just 40-odd runs after an entire day's play. Of course, I am not asking Siraj to do the same, but regulate the leakage of runs," he added.

Arshdeep Singh, tailenders' batting in focus at India's practice session in Birmingham: Report

Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh had a long practice session in India's first training session in Birmingham, reported Times of India on Friday, June 27. The left-arm fast bowler, who is yet to make his Test debut, worked closely with bowling coach Morne case Jasprit Bumrah does not play the second Test match at Edgbaston, Arshdeep could be in the running to make his Test debut. The fast bowler is well established in the white-ball format with the Indian team and would love to get a chance with the red ball, in conditions where he has played County Cricket to the report, star fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna did not train with the side, despite being at the stadium premises. Bumrah has already mentioned that he would play 3 Test matches and would take a call on more if his body responds better to the workload. The fast bowler captained India at Edgbaston back in 2022, a Test match where Ben Stokes' England chased down 378 runs to script an incredible win. The second Test of the 5-match series begins on July 2. India are already 0-1 down in the series after the hosts chased down 371 runs in little more than a day at Headingley, Leeds. Ben Duckett was instrumental in neutralising Jasprit Bumrah in the final innings of the Test match. India might play two spinners in the 2nd Test match in case the hosts once again offer a dry and flat pitch like from Arshdeep's training, focus was also put on Mohammed Siraj's batting, as Sitanshu Kotak spent an extended amount of time fixing the technique of the fast bowler. The tail of the Indian team collapsed in both innings of the 1st Test match, hurting India's prospects of scoring big totals in the game. England captain Ben Stokes later spoke about this in the post match press conference, stating that bundling out the Indian tail early turned out to be a crucial moment in the Test will expect more help from the last 5 batters in the Test match as the pitch is expected to be flatter in Edgbaston.- EndsMust Watch

'He has been losing and losing': Former India opener warns Gautam Gambhir ahead of 2nd Test

Former India opener has said that head coach Gautam Gambhir is under a lot of pressure after recent red-ball failures. He pointed out that Gambhir has been supported fully by selectors and must deliver in the 2nd Test against England to silence criticism. read more Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has said that Gautam Gambhir is under a lot of pressure as head coach of the Indian team, especially because of India's poor performance in Test matches in recent times. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out that Gambhir doesn't have a strong record in Test cricket and needs to do well in the second Test to silence the criticism. Chopra warns Gambhir Chopra said that while Gambhir's performance in white-ball formats has been good, the real questions are going to be about the Test team. He further said that the selectors have been fully supporting the team management and giving them the players they are asking for. Chopra added that Gambhir must now deliver results to prove his credentials as a red-ball coach; otherwise, questions will be asked. 'There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," Chopra said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'His performance in white-ball cricket has been good. The team has been playing well. But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series. If this series doesn't go well, God forbid, I hope it goes well. I really want Indian cricket to do well. But if the England series doesn't go too well, then there will be a question mark — Where are they going and what are they doing?" he added. 'Because the selectors feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period. There is no excuse," Chopra concluded. India lost the first Test against England at Headingley despite being ahead for most of the time. India dominated several patches of the game but allowed England to make a comeback everytime they were falling behind with both the bat and the ball. All eyes will now be on how the team responds in the second Test starting 2nd July in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

I think weve gone slower than we could have done on Archer: Rob Key

London, Jun 28 (PTI) Allaying concerns around Jofra Archer's readiness for Test cricket, England and Wales Cricket Board director Rob Key has said the pacer could have been rushed into the side much earlier but he was instead given time to gradually build himself up for the rigours of the longest format of the game. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan and Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace have suggested that Archer should not be rushed back to play the second Test against India at Edgbaston despite the pace bowler's recent comeback to red-ball cricket. The injury-prone pacer has not featured in a Test since 2021 and was recently included in the England squad for the second Test after playing a four-day Country game for Sussex where he bowled 18 overs against Durham and took a wicket. "I think we've gone slower than we could have done," Key was quoted as saying by The Guardian. "Jofra has been in a long period where he's been building up and building up (in white-ball cricket). The temptation could have been to rush him back sooner. But actually we've gone down this road to make sure that we're in this position now where we're thinking about playing him." he added. England defeated India in the opening Test at Headingley but despite the win, their pace attack lacked the punch. Archer, who emerged as one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL this season, could add the much-needed sting in the England attack if he makes its to the playing XI. "He could be one of the best bowlers we have had. And you only do that by doing it in Test cricket. Hopefully for the next few years we'll be fortunate enough to see Jofra have the chance to stake that claim," added Key. The ECB director added that England skipper Ben Stokes would know better how to use Archer smartly, without risking his injury-prone body. "These are impact players. You don't want them doing other roles. That's where you need complementary skills, so you can share a bit more of the work. The temptation at times with Jofra is that he can do a bit of everything. "But you've got to use him when he can impact the game and Ben (Stokes) is one of the best at that. You have got to be smart with how you use them so they can help you win a game," said Key. On Mark Wood, who has not featured since undergoing a knee surgery earlier this year, Key was quite positive about the pacer's return but didn't provide a timeline. Reports suggest that the speedster could play the fifth and final Test against India at the end of July. "Wood is someone who could turn up after bowling a bit in the nets, like he did (in 2023), and it's 96mph, swinging the ball and hitting a length. We're very fortunate he has the ability to hit his straps pretty much from the start. "Jofra is close to the Mark Wood end of the scale: a pretty pure talent, not a lot of moving parts to his action. He knows exactly what he is doing and what he is about."
