Daimler Truck to cut 5,000 jobs in Germany by 2030 – DW – 07/08/2025

Germany's Daimler Truck group says it will slash 5,000 jobs as part of a big savings plan. The company is seeking to trim costs as sales decline, with particularly poor results in the key US market.
Commercial vehicle manufacturer Daimler Truck on Tuesday announced that it plans to cut around 5,000 jobs in Germany by 2030.
The development comes just a day after Daimler Truck reported a 5% drop in second-quarter sales, with results especially weak in its critical US market.
The company said recent business figures showed its Mercedes-Benz Trucks need to become more market resilient.
The cost-cutting program, named "Cost Down Europe," is intended to get the European business back on track and improve profitability. Its aim is save up to more than €1 billion in total annual savings by 2030.
A day ahead of the announcement, sales fell for a second quarter — to 106,715 trucks and buses compared with 112,195 units last year.
The DAX-listed company reached an agreement in May with the central works council on key points for its German truck sites.
This includes a socially responsible workforce reduction and a commitment to avoid compulsory redundancies until the end of 2034.
The company plans to cut recurring costs by more than one billion euros by 2030, targeting personnel, materials, administration, IT infrastructure, and research and development expenses.

A spokesperson said most jobs would be cut through natural attrition and early retirement, though targeted severance programs are also possible.
The cuts will affect the truck division's Stuttgart hub, which employed around 28,000 people at the end of 2024.
Daimler Truck has about 35,500 employees in Germany overall with five sites in Germany: Gaggenau, Kassel, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Wörth — the latter being Europe's largest truck assembly plant.
Daimler Truck AG was split off from the former Daimler AG in 2021. After the spin-off, Daimler Truck kept the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand for its heavy and medium-duty trucks in Europe and other markets.

The two sides had agreed a deal that would extend an employment guarantee to more than 10,000 workers at the factory until 2032, the works council said in a statement. It was "too early to say" if the agreement would live up to employee expectations but "the most important thing is that we have a safety net that takes away workers' existential fears", IG Metall union official David Luedtke said. The union welcomed the agreement with management at the carmaker but said the plant's long-term future "remained uncertain". "Ford's strategic deliberations over Europe are still not finalised," the union said in a statement. The Cologne plant was hit by a strike in May after Ford announced 2,900 job cuts in Germany as part of plans to reduce costs across Europe and boost competitiveness. Advertisement The firm has spent 2.3 billion euros refitting the factory plant for electric vehicle (EV) production in anticipation of higher demand for low-emissions vehicles. But EV sales in Europe have tailed off in the face of high up-front costs and sparse charging infrastructure. In March, Ford rattled employees after the US parent withdrew a guarantee to offset losses at the German subsidiary, while at the same time as injecting 4.4 billion euros into the business.

Defence, Joint Debt And Farmers: EU Draws Budget Battle Lines

When the European Union unveils its long-term spending proposals next week, it will kick off the bloc's biggest budget battle in recent history. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has a mammoth task on her hands: present a budget for 2028-2034 that supports farmers, helps member states ramp up their defence spending, and all while paying back the debts racked up during the covid pandemic. The European Commission, the bloc's executive arm, will outline the proposals Wednesday, setting the stage for explosive debates with capitals and EU lawmakers over the next two years. The previous 2021-2027 budget was worth around 1.2 trillion euros ($1.4 trillion) and made up from national contributions -- around one percent of the member states' gross national income -- and money collected by the EU such as customs duties. The European Parliament has already made it clear it wants more money. Von der Leyen wants the budget to address the EU's priorities: security, competitiveness and better preparing the 27-country bloc for economic shocks. But the EU wants to achieve this while reining in ballooning public debts and deficits, and simultaneously bolstering its industries to catch up with rivals in China and the United States. Security will be top of von der Leyen's mind as she makes the finishing touches to the budget with war still raging in Ukraine and fears among member states of a more aggressive Russia. It is more important given the NATO military alliance last month pledged to spend significantly more on defence -- some five percent of national economic output. There are 23 EU members in the Western military alliance. Also under consideration is a 100-billion-euro fund to keep Ukraine afloat, but one EU official said it could change between now and Wednesday. Von der Leyen this week vowed to support Ukraine "until 2028 and beyond, when the new European budget kicks in". Under EU treaties, the bloc cannot spend directly on defence, but it can pour money into dual-use infrastructure like bridges that would be critical during a war. The EU's common agricultural policy (CAP) -- vast farming subsidies that make up the biggest share of the budget -- will be the subject of fiery debates. It accounts for nearly a third of the EU's current multi-year budget -- around 387 billion euros, of which 270 billion euros are directly paid to farmers. The EU is thinking about moving away from subsidies based on farm size -- and putting a cap on how much one farm can get -- which could free up billions of euros. "There is a growing recognition that its share in the EU budget should decline and I also expect it to decline further," said Zsolt Darvas of Bruegel think tank. The commission is considering cutting part of the agriculture budget without touching the direct payments, but farmers have made it clear that's a red line. "I have a tractor and I'm ready," Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Europe's influential Copa farming lobby, raising the spectre of more farmers' protests after months of demonstrations last year by disgruntled European farmers. Farmers plan to protest Wednesday in front of the commission in Brussels as they seek to pile the pressure on the EU. Brussels is also looking into whether CAP will keep its dedicated budget or be integrated into wider cohesion funds, with allocations left to member states to decide. France, whose farmers are the biggest CAP beneficiary, opposes this. The big question looming over everything: where will the money for all this come from? France, Italy and others are pushing for more joint borrowing but that's a no-go for Germany, a major net contributor to the budget, as well as frugal EU states Finland, The Netherlands and Sweden. One idea put forward has been an instrument that would allow the EU to seek grants or loans in the event of a crisis like the pandemic. Since some states would fiercely oppose such a measure, an EU diplomat said he had seen the idea appear and disappear from draft texts shared with capitals. Other options to raise money include a possible digital services levy as well as collecting money from taxes on small packages entering from outside the EU. The last time the EU took on joint debt was during the pandemic, borrowing around 800 billion euros to rescue the European economy. Except now the bloc must start paying that money back -- potentially up to 30 billion euros annually -- from 2028.

Germany's business elite and the illusion of meritocracy – DW – 07/11/2025

Germany sees itself as a meritocracy, meaning if you work hard, you can make it to the top. But is that really true, considering who actually sits in German executive offices and how they got there? Populist leaders like Donald Trump frequently claim they are protecting ordinary people from the elites. But do these elites really exist — the kind that pull the strings behind the scenes? And what actually determines who holds power in the boardrooms of Germany's biggest companies? Is it performance — or do other factors, like social background, play a bigger role? Sociologist Michael Hartmann has studied Germany's executive class as it evolved over the past 150 years, trying to figure out who actually ends up in top corporate positions and why. The results surprised even him, emeritus professor at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany. "To this day, more than four-fifths of Germany's economic elite come from the top three to four percent of the population," he told DW. Hartmann says there was a slight shift between 1907 and 1927, with more Germans from lower classes managing to climb the social ladder. "But in the nearly 100 years that followed, the share of those from lower social backgrounds who made it to the top increased by only about two and a half percent." Over the past decade, companies have introduced diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs meant to create a level playing field for labor market participation for all. According to a recent survey by German technology-sector lobby group Bitkom, two-thirds of German companies with 500 or more employees now have formal DEI goals, and nearly another third are planning or discussing such initiatives. Still, when it comes to influential leadership positions, the elite tends to stick to its own. But in recent years, more women have entered executive roles — thanks in large part to legally mandated gender quotas, Hartmann said. The German-Swedish AllBright Foundation has criticized the continued gender imbalance in its latest report. "Personnel decisions for top management levels — especially supervisory board and executive board chair positions — are still almost entirely in male hands. In general, the higher the position, the fewer women are represented," the report stated. And those women who do reach the top often come from even more exclusive social backgrounds than their male peers, Hartmann says — something that would also apply to people with migrant backgrounds. "My assumption is that if you already have one 'obstacle,' like, for example, gender or migration background, then your social origin has to be even more elitist," he said, adding that you "can't afford to have two obstacles." In Germany, class bias begins early, namely with the type of education. Children of academics have a far easier time accessing resources and support than children of working-class families. According to a Germany study by British specialist recruitment firm PageGroup, around 80% of children from academic households go on to attend university, compared to just 25% or so of children from nonacademic homes. Without a university degree, Hartmann said, it's nearly impossible to reach the highest levels in the business world. But even when elite offspring achieve the same academic qualifications, their career path tends to be quicker and smoother than those with other backgrounds. After analyzing multiple cohorts of Germans with academic degrees, Hartmann has found that children of business executives holding PhDs were 17 times more likely to make it onto the board of one of Germany's 400 largest companies than working-class children with the same degree. Moreover, additional factors would help determine who rises to the top, for example, how someone speaks, how they present themselves, and even their hobbies can play a decisive role. "People like to surround themselves with others who share their interests, who think like them, who speak like them," said Hartmann, and that's true for the executives making hiring decisions as well. There has been one positive development in Germany in recent decades, Hartmann noted, as the share of top leaders from working-class backgrounds has increased noticeably — though still from a very low base. However, this progress has come at the expense of children from the middle class, he added. "Put simply, when a working-class child achieves a high level of education and becomes a contender for a top business role, they often displace someone from the middle class — say, a teacher's child." Overall, the proportion of children from elite backgrounds in top corporate roles in Germany has remained the same. When social origin largely determines career success, it affects more than just individuals — it slows economic growth, PageGroup says, calculating the cost of the lack of social mobility in Germany at around €25 billion ($29 billion) in GDP growth each year. A McKinsey study found that in the 27 EU countries, GDP could increase by 9% — or €1.3 trillion — if social mobility were improved. There are, of course, stories of individuals from modest backgrounds who make it to the top like, for example, the often-cited example of former Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser — the son of a factory worker. Although regularly highlighted in the media, such stories, cautioned Hartmann, are featured so often that "people start to believe they're common." So how can the dominance of elites in Germany be challenged? Hartmann believes the answer can only be legally binding quotas to overcome all sorts of discrimination and class bias. These may be unpopular, he admits, "but in my experience, nothing else will work."
