The best theatre to stream this month: tailoring comedy Alterations gets a fitting tribute

The Guardiana day ago
Almost 10 years after his death and nearly 50 after it was written, Guyana-born British playwright Michael Abbensetts' tailoring comedy arrived at the National Theatre in February for Rufus Norris's final season. Its director, Lynette Linton, hailed the decision to put it on 'one of the biggest stages in the country, and highlight how incredible this man and his generation of writers were'. A triumph for Linton, it should encourage others to delve into the NT's Black Plays Archive. Available from NT at Home from 12 August.
There's more transfixing tailoring in this 2024 dance production marking the 300th anniversary of Bach's oratorio. The always arresting German choreographer Sasha Waltz introduces her dancers, in the nude, adjusting their smocks at sewing machines before donning the costumes for a spellbinding performance. On Arte.
Tianzhuo Chen's 12-hour 'theatre-rave' Trance, recently staged at London's Southbank Centre, provokes some extreme reactions. 'People say it's the best performance ever,' says Chen. 'They feel healed, cleansed.' Then again: 'Some people really don't like it!' Incredibly, the whole thing – shot in 2024 – is on YouTube, so you can make up your own mind.
It's the song of the summer in the West End, enchanting passersby outside the Palladium where it's delivered from the balcony by Rachel Zegler (and her alternate, Bella Brown, who also has an incredible voice) in an alfresco swerve during Jamie Lloyd's production. If you can't catch it live, Zegler's recording of the Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber perennial is now available.
The mix tape is having a moment, thanks to a new BBC romantic drama. But in playwright and performer Azan Ahmed's solo show, the tape unspools a teacher's relationship with his father. Esme Allman's production, seen at the Bush theatre in 2024, is available from the Theatre Channel.
With music and lyrics by Caroline Wigmore and Jen Green, Golden Toad Theatre's audio musical on YouTube is based on the book by Gillian Hibbs about a green-fingered boy whose gardening projects grow all over his family's flat. Aimed at children aged three to eight, it should brighten up summer journeys or rainy days at home.
IJAD Dance Company is on a mission to put technology at the heart of performance in order to 'future-proof the arts and transform audience engagement'. In June it presented a hybrid theatre festival both online and at Hammersmith Studios. Five of those shows are now available on demand at Open Online Theatre until 4 August.
Arsema Thomas, who landed a breakout role in Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte shortly after leaving Lamda, makes her professional stage debut at Richmond's Orange Tree in a comedy spun from the stories of Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi. Written by Chiara Atik, it's directed by Blanche McIntyre and co-stars Freddy Carter. Available 12-15 August.

Tina O'Brien is 'getting serious' with new boyfriend Adam Fadlé nine months after split from husband of seven years Adam Crofts

Tina O'Brien is reportedly getting 'serious' with new boyfriend Adam Fadle - nine months after split from husband Adam Crofts. The Corrie star, 41, and the interior design mogul, 38, attended Jack P. Shepherd's star-studded wedding on Saturday (July 26) as they made their first public appearance together. And after being spotted packing on the PDA after the event, sources now claim things are moving quickly between the pair - and marriage might not be far off the table, according to OK! A guest at the wedding told the publication : 'There was no mistaking they were an item on the day.' They added: 'Tina dotes on him - she loves that he's very calm and is a real gentleman, in every way. 'She's head over heels. This is no flash in the pan relationship, they're getting serious.' DailyMail has contacted Tina's representative for comment. It comes after Tina looked happier than ever as she passionately kissed Adam while departing Jack's wedding in the early hours on Sunday. The pair looked more loved-up than ever as they packed on the PDA as they exited the wedding reception. The couple reportedly met through friends in their home town of Cheshire this summer and have been on a string of dates. Tina looked sensational as she went braless under a pretty blue and white backless floral dress which boated a daring plunging neckline. She elevated her frame in a pair of pink heels and toted her belongings in a white handbag while Adam donned a smart navy suit with a white shirt. The couple couldn't keep their hands off each other as they kissed while waiting for their taxi to head back to their Manchester hotel. Adam - who bears a striking resemblance to her ex - is the founder of interior design firm Panoramic Properties, which boasts big names including Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo as clients. Tina and Adam were all smiles as they walked holding hands following the night celebrating her co-star Jack and his new wife Hanni Treweek. Earlier in the day, Jack and Hanni tied the knot at Manchester Cathedral, just over one year after he popped the question while on safari in Tanzania, Africa, before having a wedding reception at a nearby hotel. Last month a source told The Sun of Tina's new romance: 'Tina fell out of love with one Adam and then fell in love with another. 'She's been on a few dates with him and they've been very open with their relationship. They were out last week snogging like teenagers and they've been seen walking her dog by locals. 'Tina looked totally mad for Adam and they couldn't keep their hands off each other.' MailOnline contacted Tina's representatives for comment at the time. It was revealed earlier this year that the Corrie star had split from her husband after weeks of speculation. The estranged couple, who share ten-year-old son Beau, are said to be 'on good terms' for the sake of their son but their differing lifestyles reportedly drove them apart. They pair first met in a Manchester coffee shop in 2011 and the couple tied the knot in a surprise NYE ceremony in 2018. The star - who plays Sarah Platt in the ITV show - first sparked split rumours when she shared a photograph of herself at co-star Colson Smith's leaving party in Manchester. Taking to Instagram, Tina cut a glamorous figure in a red mini dress and posed with a bare ring finger on display, just weeks after jetting off on holiday without Crofts. She further fuelled the speculation as she was seen with a notably bare finger while out for a cup of tea in Cheshire. Friends then revealed the split as they said: 'Tina and Adam have ended their relationship and are spending some time apart. 'They moved house at Christmas and have decided to live separately for the time being. The insider told The Sun: 'Adam and Tina lead very different lives - he is really into his fitness, while she really enjoys going out with her mates and having a dance, which just isn't for him. 'It wasn't an issue at first because they were head over heels, but as the kids have started to grow up it's become more noticeable. Adam likes a quiet life and unfortunately that just isn't Tina.'

Dirty sock once worn by Michael Jackson sells at auction for an eye-watering sum

A dirty sock once worn by Michael Jackson has raised a staggering £6,600 at an auction in France. The single crystal-encrusted sock was used by the King of Pop at a concert in Nimes, a city in the south of France, in 1997. It was found by a technician after the American's performance and has been preserved for 28 years in a frame. The sock was only expected to fetch between £2,500 to £3,000 at the Nimes auction house, but raked in £6,640 on Wednesday. It was originally white with glittering rhinestones, but they have yellowed as they have aged. Jackson wore white athletic socks during his 1997 HIStory World Tour, which saw him perform 82 concerts in 57 cities across 35 countries. He can be seen wearing the sock in clips of him performing his hit 'Billie Jean'. Aurore Illy, the auctioneer, said: 'It really is an exceptional object – even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans.' Jackson faced allegations of child molestation before he died of an overdose aged 50 in 2009. Nevertheless, his clothing has sold for large sums following his death 16 years ago. In 2009, a casino in the Chinese gambling haven of Macau paid £260,000 for a glittery glove the pop star wore when he performed his first 'moonwalk' dance in 1983. A hat he wore before that show was bought for over £60,000 in a Paris auction in September 2023. Two months later a black and white leather jacket he donned in a Pepsi advert in 1984 went for £250,000. In 2011, the contents of the house he last lived in sold for around £646,000 at an auction in Los Angeles.
