Orioles announcer Ben McDonald hospitalized after fall from deer stand

New York Post6 days ago
Orioles announcer Ben McDonald was hospitalized after falling 25 feet from a deer stand Thursday morning, he revealed in an X post.
McDonald, who said he suffered a 'severe concussion' along with two cracked vertebrae and doesn't remember anything from the scary incident, shared a video of him in a hospital bed asking what happened.
He is told that the chain or the strap broke from someone else in the room.

'I'm fine and appreciate everyone checking on me,' McDonald, 57, wrote in his post, in part. 'Very lucky … I'll be back in #Birdland soon calling @Orioles games! Thank you for all ur thoughts … and thank you to the Doctors! See yall soon!'

McDonald, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 1989 MLB Draft and ex-Baltimore pitcher now working as an analyst for the team's MASN broadcasts, didn't specify when he planned to return to the broadcast booth.

But during Baltimore's game against the Rays on Friday, as the season resumed following the All-Star break, the Orioles broadcasters said they were 'thinking of you' and hoping McDonald can 'get back to the ballpark as soon as you can.'
'I talked to him today, and he goes, 'Well I don't remember the fall,'' one broadcaster said during the segment, according to Awful Announcing. 'He said, 'I've been doing this for 35 years and I never fell.' He said a lot of the people that he was with … don't like to go up 25 feet. So I think Ben's gonna join them now. I said, 'Isn't there a parachute or something that can, you know, [help] for 25-feet falls?''
McDonald pitched in the majors from 1989-97, collecting a 3.91 career ERA across 211 appearances — including 198 starts — with the Orioles and Brewers, and he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 for his years at LSU.

The Orioles, who won eight of their final 13 games entering the break, lost, 11-1, on Friday and will continue their series in Tampa on Saturday.

Mariners acquire Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks for 2 pitchers as trade deadline deals begin

The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday as the franchise tries to beef up its lineup ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. The 28-year-old Naylor is hitting .292 with 11 homers and 59 RBIs this season, which was his first with the D-backs. He was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in a trade during the offseason. Naylor hit a winning grand slam against the Mariners in June. 'We are thrilled to add Josh as we make a push for the postseason,' Seattle general manager Justin Hollander said in a statement. 'Josh's ability to hit for both average and power is unique and we are excited to not face him anymore.' The D-backs acquired left-hander Brandyn Garcia, who has two appearances for the Mariners this season, and minor-league lefty Ashton Izzi. The Mariners currently have a 54-48 record, which is good for second place in the AL West. They are in the second wild-card position. The D-backs — who have a disappointing 50-53 record — are expected to continue dealing players ahead of next week's trade deadline. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez and pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen are among the players with expiring contracts who could be on the move. Naylor was an All-Star last season with a career-high 31 homers and 108 RBIs for the Guardians.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski drops flag football truth bomb

The post Browns coach Kevin Stefanski drops flag football truth bomb appeared first on ClutchPoints. Flag football has surged in popularity since it was confirmed to make its debut in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Since then, opinions on the sport have varied, but Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski firmly supports its growth. With the Ohio High School Athletic Association approving girls' flag football as a varsity sport for the 2025-2026 academic year, Stefanski voiced his approval for the move. The Browns played a big role in the sanctioning of the sport, a process that began in 2022. '[Flag football is] fast, it's really fun, it's safe [and] you get to see their athleticism put on display,' Stefanski said, via ESPN. 'I think it's going to be growing even more because it's so fun to play. This is a great first step. It's more than deserving for these girls to play for their high schools and have it sanctioned as a varsity sport. It's just going to keep growing, especially with the Olympics around the corner.' Stefanski's comments came at the 2025 NFL Flag Championships at Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio. The annual three-day event crowns the national champions in the NFL-run youth leagues and is streamed live on ESPN, NFL Network and Disney Channel. The NFL Flag Championships essentially wrap up Stefanski's summer vacation. The Browns report to training camp beginning on July 25, where their four-man quarterback competition resumes. Cleveland has yet to reveal anything from its compelling offseason battle, with virtually every report suggesting a different claim. Browns, Kevin Stefanski's role in growing flag football popularity As committed as the Browns are to their own organization, they have been just as active in the Ohio community. Following multiple proposals, funding offers and trial leagues, Cleveland finally succeeded in getting flag football Over the last 10 years, football has received progressive criticism for its head injury risk, particularly to young athletes. The game is too popular to ever go away, making flag football a potentially lucrative avenue. With the 2028 Summer Olympics still a few years away, allowing high school athletes to compete in flag football on a competitive level provides more athletes with a potential path. The NFL remains undecided on allowing its players to participate in the Olympics, potentially creating even more opportunities for others. Astros interested in 36 home run third baseman, according to MLB insider

The Houston Astros have seen a few of their key offensive players go down with injury this season. With a week until the MLB trade deadline, the team is exploring options to bolster the roster, which has dealt with such injuries. Most recently, the injury to Isaac Paredes, which, as manager Joe Espada described, is "pretty serious," could lead general manager Dana Brown to inquire about third base options. And according to Francys Romero of the Astros are interested in one of the top third basemen on the trade market this season. "The Astros are also showing interest in Eugenio Suarez and have a deep enough farm system to back a potential trade, per industry sources." Romero writes. This report from Romero comes a little after the Seattle Mariners swung a deal for another Arizona Diamondbacks star in Josh Naylor. But the Mariners are still in on Suarez, and now, the Astros are interested in him too. Suarez, the 34-year-old third baseman, has been on a tear this season. He has 36 home runs, an MLB-leading 86 RBIs, and a .918 OPS. He also earned his second career All-Star nod and reached 300 career home runs this season. But, in the final year of his $79 million deal, and with the Diamondbacks' struggles, Suarez has become one of the hottest commodities at the trade deadline. MORE: Astros named a 'strong trade fit' for Braves three-time All-Star silver slugger Romero's report, beyond the Astros' interest, is noteworthy. For the talk surrounding the Astros' farm system being weak, this report suggests that the Astros could swing a deal for Suarez, one of the top names on the market at this trade deadline. With a week to go until the deadline, Houston will have a chance to make a push for Suarez. While the cost may be high, Romero's report indicates that they have enough to land him. The Astros, amid Paredes' injury, are interested in Suarez and have the trade capital to bring him to Houston. It'd be a huge move, but the Astros are reportedly interested in making such a move happen.
