Kidambi Srikanth semi-final loss end India's campaign at Canada Open 2025
Kidambi Srikanth, 49th in the men's singles badminton rankings, won the first game but squandered the lead to lose 19-21, 21-14, 21-18 to Japan's Kenta Nishimoto, the world No. 12 and third seed, in an hour and 18 minutes, according to Olympics.com.
The Indian badminton player, who defeated Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals, also had a strong start against Kenta Nishimoto. Kidambi Srikanth overcame a trail of 18-16 to win the first match.
According to the Olympics.com report, Srikanth maintained his momentum and quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the second game after Kenta Nishimoto tied the score at 14-all. At that moment, the Japanese increased their speed and won the following seven points in a row to tie the score.
The decider, a tense one, swayed like a pendulum. Once 6-1 behind, a fruitful phase in the middle saw Srikanth lead 12-8. Kenta Nishimoto also responded to draw level at 18-18 before wrapping up the game and match.
This was Kidambi Srikanth's fifth loss to Kenta Nishimoto in 11 meetings. The head-to-head was tied at five-all heading into Saturday's fixture.
Kidambi Srikanth was the only Indian challenge left at the Canada Open.
In women's singles, Shriyanshi Valishetty's spirited run came to an end in the quarterfinals. The 18-year-old pushed Amalie Schulz to the brink in a three-game thriller but eventually lost 21-12, 19-21, 19-21, wrapping up a memorable campaign.
Indian badminton players will be in action next on the BWF World Tour at the Super 750 Japan Open, which begins on July 15. (ANI)

Astana: Women boxers led India's march to glory as three of them — Sakshi (54kg), Jaismine (57kg) and Nupur (80+kg) — registered contrasting victories to bag gold medals as the Indian contingent clinched its best ever medal haul at the World Boxing Cup – Astana, Kazakhstan 2025 here on Sunday. In the first session of the final day on Sunday, it was Sakshi who managed to stand atop of the podium with a stellar display that combined speed and combination punches and open India's gold medal account. In the evening session, Jaismine had to use her long reach to keep her Brazilian opponent at bay in the third and final round after there was not much to separate the two after the first two rounds. The tall 23-year-old stayed away from her opponent in the final round and landed punches on the counter attack to get the judges' nod. Nupur also struggled at the start against Talipova as the home boxer took the opening round. But the Indian boxer completely dominated the next two rounds, landing punches at will and out-thinking her opponent to have the last laugh. Earlier, Meenakshi pushed hard for victory against local favourite Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg final but ended on the wrong side of a 3:2 verdict. Jugnoo (men's 85kg), Pooja Rani (women's 80kg), Hitesh Gulia (men's 70kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (men's 65kg) will also return home with silver medals after losing their respective finals. Jugnoo lost 0:5 against Bekzad Nurdauletov of Kazakhstan while Pooja went down by an identical score line against Australia's Eseta Flint. In the evening session, Hitesh lost 0:5 against Brazil's Kaian Oliveira while Jamwal went down 2:3 against Yuri Falcao. Sanju (women's 60kg), Nikhil Dubey (men's 75kg) and Narender (men's 90+ kg) will return home with a bronze medal each.

Akash Deep draws high praise from Nasser Hussain as he eyes maiden Test five-wicket haul
Birmingham [UK], July 6 (ANI): India's pace sensation Akash Deep has turned heads with another brilliant spell in the final innings of the ongoing Test against England at Edgbaston, leaving the hosts reeling at 153/6 at Lunch on Day 5. Chasing an improbable 608, England still needs 455 runs to pull off a miracle, but the damage already inflicted by Akash Deep has made survival their only realistic goal. Former England captain Nasser Hussain was full of praise for the young pacer, who removed Ollie Pope and Harry Brook in a fiery morning spell to push England into deeper trouble. 'I think he is a highly-skilled bowler - and at you all the time,' Hussain said on Sky Sports, adding that 'It's not just the cracks in the pitch (why he's had success).' 'He is a wonderful bowler,' he noted. Akash Deep, who picked up 4/88 in the first innings, has already added 4/58 in the second, putting him on the brink of a maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His relentless accuracy and control have been instrumental in India's dominant position. Hussain also lauded India captain Shubman Gill's decision-making, particularly the timely use of off-spinner Washington Sundar, who trapped Ben Stokes lbw just when the England captain was starting to find some rhythm. Pant, Jamie achieve all-time batting record in England amongst wicketkeeper-batters
Birmingham [UK], July 6 (ANI): Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and his English counterpart Jamie Smith made history, as they together secured the highest aggregate by wicketkeeper-batters during a Test series in England. The duo secured this record during the second Test at Birmingham. While Rishabh scored just 25 in the first innings, contributing very little to India's first innings total of 587 runs, Jamie scored an unbeaten 184* in 207 balls in England's first innings, consisting of 21 fours and four sixes as a part of a 303-run stand with Harry Brook following an early collapse which left England at 89/5. Brook and Jamie made sure England reached 407 runs, trailing by 180 runs still. Jamie attained the highest individual score by an England wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, overtaking Alec Stewart's 173 back in 1997 against New Zealand. In the second innings, Pant had an attacking 110-run fourth-wicket partnership with skipper Gill, scoring an entertaining 65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes. This knock had it all, be it bat slips, shots with him falling on the ground and some exhibition of brute strength.
