Parliament is not museum: Cong's Manickam Tagore slams govt over nameplate

He referred to a letter signed by 240 MPs, a majority in the Lok Sabha, demanding a special session to discuss the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, and criticised the government for not responding.
"When 240 MPs--a majority in the Lok Sabha--wrote to the PM demanding a session to discuss Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor, the government responded with... silence. First time in history such a large democratic request was ignored. What's next, ignoring elections?" Tagore asked.
"Strong words. And our PM? Still on silent mode," he wrote in a post.
Furthermore, he stated, "So we have: A Parliament with a nameplate. No respect for MPs' demands. No statement on foreign leaders claiming to pressure India."
Although the government has announced the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Congress leader pointed out the absence of any response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding US President Donald Trump's claim that he made 14 calls to Modi and allegedly "threatened" him into a ceasefire.
The upcoming Monsoon session will be the first Parliament session following Operation Sindoor, which was launched by India on May 7 in response to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
The Budget session of Parliament began on January 31 this year. The Budget Session saw the passage of significant legislation, including the Waqf Amendment Bill.
There will be no Parliament sittings on August 13 and 14 due to Independence Day celebrations.

Opposition slams EC over special intensive revision of electoral rolls
The Congress, along with its allies such as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Left parties, on Thursday launched a fresh attack on the Election Commission (EC) over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, accusing the poll body of conspiring to deprive 20 per cent of the population of their voting rights, and asked it not to act at the behest of the ruling party. Addressing a press conference here, Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said the EC should act within the limits set by the Constitution and be a "slave" to democracy and voters, not the BJP. On Wednesday, leaders of several INDIA bloc parties met the EC over the SIR issue and raised concerns over its timing, alleging that over 20 million voters in the state could be disenfranchised by this mammoth exercise being conducted just ahead of the assembly elections. The Election Commission on Thursday said it had met representatives of various political parties on Wednesday and heard their concerns, issues, and queries raised by them, and "decoded for them the entire special intensive revision". The EC told the parties that the exercise is being held in a planned, structured, and phased manner to facilitate the inclusion of all eligible citizens. In the first phase, from June 25 to July 3, enumeration forms are being printed and distributed to the approximately 79 million electors in Bihar. In the second phase, the enumeration forms will be filled and are to be submitted before July 25. Electors whose names appear in the electoral roll as of January 1, 2003, are only required to submit the enumeration forms along with an extract of the roll. They don't have to submit any other documents. Those not listed in the 2003 roll will need to submit one of 11 documents for their date of birth/place of birth. In the fourth phase, the draft electoral roll will be published on August 1. The final electoral roll will be published on September 30.

Allahabad HC denies bail to man for posts against PM, Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor
LUCKNOW: The Allahabad High Court has refused bail to a person accused of posting objectionable content on social media against the Prime Minister and the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor, following the Phalagam massacre. A single-judge bench, comprising Justice Arun Kumar Deshwal, observed that the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Constitution of India does not extend to acts that disrespect the high dignitaries of the country and create disharmony among citizens. Justice Deshwal stated that it had become a trend among certain groups to misuse social media platforms under the guise of freedom of speech by making nasty and unfounded allegations against dignitaries and spreading disharmony and hatred among communities. The petitioner, Ashraf Khan alias Nisrat, had been booked under Sections 152 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly posting edited videos on his Facebook account during the recent India-Pakistan face-off following the Phalagam massacre. According to the prosecution, the petitioner, who had moved the High Court seeking bail, allegedly posted a video showing the Prime Minister walking next to a donkey pulling a cart carrying an aircraft, later showing him apologising to Pakistan.

'It won't be nice in the international sports world (if there are any such restrictions),' the officials said. The cabinet approved the new sports policy this week which the union sports ministry is confident will usher in a '360 degrees reform' in Indian sports. The sports ministry has prepared a roadmap for the implementation of the wide-ranging aspects addressed by the policy document and a monitoring group comprising the sports, education and culture ministries will be set up for development of sports at the grassroots. While the government acknowledges the role states have in education, and sports in these institutions, the ministry sources also said: 'Sports is a state subject but international sports is a central subject.' A Khelo India Water Sports Festival will be held in Srinagar's Dal Lake from August 21-23.
