Taking a break, Pope Leo revives centuries-old tradition
Leo, elected pope on May 8 after the death of Francis, will spend July 6-20 an hour's drive south of Rome in the sleepy hill town of about 8,900 residents on the shores of Lake Albano.
The town's mayor and business owners hope his stay - the first by a pope in 12 years - will attract tourists hoping to see the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Vatican has owned a papal palace in the town, including vast Renaissance-style gardens, since 1596, but Francis, who shunned much of the pomp and privilege of the papacy, chose not to take vacations, spending the summer in his Vatican residence.
"Pope Leo has given us a wonderful gift," Stefano Carosi, the owner of a coffee shop on the town's main square, said. "The pope has always been important here ... because he attracts people."
Mayor Alberto De Angelis said residents were excited about the visit. "The presence of the popes in Castel Gandolfo has always meant a lot of activity, a lot of economic growth," he said.
While Leo is expected to spend most of his vacation out of the public eye, staying in a Vatican-owned building behind a gated wall, residents and tourists will have the opportunity to see him at religious celebrations on July 13 and 20.
Dozens of popes have spent the summer months at Castel Gandolfo, where it is cooler than in Rome, which has been sweltering in an early summer heatwave with temperatures reaching more than 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit).
Francis had Castel Gandolfo's papal palace turned into a museum and opened the gardens to visitors.
Leo will not stay at the palace and the museum will remain open to the public, instead staying at another Vatican property.
Although Francis never spent the night in Castel Gandolfo, residents said his decision to open the museum has had long-lasting benefits.
Marina Rossi, owner of a mosaic studio in the town, said tourists used to come only in the summer to see the pope at one of his audiences, but now they came more frequently.
"It was more of a hit-and-run tourism, because there was the audience and then they would leave," she said. "Now there is a steady flow of tourism throughout the whole year."
Now, with Leo coming back, said Rossi, it gave the town the chance to attract even more tourists. "It's an important moment," she said. "I won't hide my happiness."
As for what Leo might do during his vacation, Maurizio Carosi, brother of Stefano, had a suggestion, saying he'd tell the pope: "If you want a good glass of wine, come visit with me!"

Wichita, Kansas Wichita has a good amount of outdoor recreational activities but only has one restaurant recognized by the James Beard Foundation for exceptional achievement in the culinary arts in recent years. 'Wichita also ranks in the bottom five in the country in terms of international visitors per capita, indicating that it isn't offering much in the way of eye-catching attractions for outsiders,' FinanceBuzz said. Corpus Christi, Texas Corpus Christi has no award-winning restaurants and doesn't offer many things to do compared to other cities. The city is 'in the bottom 15 when it comes to the number of sports teams in the city and bottom 10 in terms of must-do attractions per capita,' FinanceBuzz said. Sioux Falls, South Dakota Sioux Falls has several restaurants with James Beard awards, but it also has 'the highest percentage of eateries that are chain restaurants of any city in the country,' FinanceBuzz said. The city also struggles with fun attractions and has few sports teams. Memphis, Tennessee Memphis not only has 'the 12th-fewest number of annual events and celebrations relative to population size,' according to FinanceBuzz, but the quality of its parks and the number of hiking trails leave something to be desired. San Antonio, Texas FinanceBuzz did mention some highlights of San Antonio, such as the Alamo and River Walk, but when nightfall comes, there aren't many clubs and concert venues to visit compared to other cities. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma More than half the food joints in Oklahoma City are restaurant chains and it may be hard to find hiking trails compared to other cities. The city also has 'some of the worst parks in the country,' FinanceBuzz said. Columbus, Ohio Despite being a college town, Columbus 'has the 14th-lowest rate of nightclubs per capita,' FinanceBuzz said. The city also struggles with fun attractions. Tallahassee, Florida While Tallahassee has a young and vibrant population thanks to Florida State University, it may be hard to find fun attractions, concerts or sports games in the area compared to other cities, according to FinanceBuzz's analysis. Norway newlywed Bizet loving Swiss Euro 'honeymoon'
July 4 (Reuters) - Very few blushing brides choose to spend their honeymoon time almost lobbing the keeper for a goal at a major tournament but that was the case for Norway's Celin Bizet Donnum, who recently married fellow player Aron before flying to the Women's Euros. Following a fairytale wedding on the shores of Italy's Lake Como, the bubbly 23-year-old came on in her country's 2-1 opening win over hosts Switzerland on Wednesday and almost got the perfect wedding present but her effort flew just wide. "It's hard to sometimes organise when to have stuff like weddings but we thought in the next five years everything can happen and obviously he's on the national team too and if they go to a tournament, it's going to be for how long?" Bizet told Reuters of the decision to get married so close to the Euros. "But it was no stress, to be fair, it was all chilled and nice and a lovely place in Italy, and I had the best days of my life." With husband Aron playing for Toulouse in France and Celine having completed a busy season in the Women's Super League with Manchester United, the crammed football calendar leaves little time for long-distance relationships, let alone weddings. "I think I'm kind of used to it. It's my life, it's my husband's life. He's two days off and then training again, or two weeks off on holiday and then straight to training," she said. "So I think we're very used to it, and it's not like we're not going to have our honeymoon (very soon), it's going to be in the future, so I'm looking forward to that."
