'Generali' sign atop insurer's skyscraper offices collapses in Milan
MILAN, June 30 (Reuters) - One of the giant Generali signs that crown the Milanese head offices of the Italian insurer collapsed on Monday, remaining atop the 170 metre-high skyscraper but at risk of crashing to the ground, firefighters said on Monday.
A spokesperson for Generali (GASI.MI), opens new tab said there had been no injuries, adding that staff had been instructed to remain at home and work remotely.
Firefighters said they were working with Generali personnel to prevent the sign from dislodging from the top of the building and plunging to the ground. The area has been cordoned off and the nearby metro station shut.
The Generali building, known as the Hadid Tower, is part of the Milan's CityLife redevelopment project which saw the construction of three iconic skyscrapers dubbed the 'Le Tre Torri' (three towers) on the grounds of the former trade fair.
Built between 2014 and 2017 and spanning 44 storeys, the Generali tower was designed by the late Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid.

A MAJOR airport is getting a huge new terminal as part of a multi-million pound expansion across the country. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) will be designing Vilnius' new arrivals terminal with designs directly influenced by Lithuanian culture. 6 6 6 References to Lithuanian cultural heritage in the airport include geometric elements in the style of the traditional art forms like 'sodai straw gardens'. The timber roof will also feature geometric skylights. Works on the airport terminal will begin at the start of 2027 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2029. Once finished, the new terminal will allow the airport - which is currently at full capacity - to serve up to 10.6 million passengers each year. The new terminal is part of the Lithuanian Airports' 2052 masterplan to boost the region's connectivity to the rest of the globe, which will cost €250million (£213.8million) between now and 2052. Vilnius Airport is currently the largest airport in Lithuania and by 2052, around 17 million passengers are expected to use the airports in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga, each year. Further development plans for Vilnius Airport include high-speed and local rail services, buses, taxis, cycle and pedestrian routes and increased direct flights from Vilnius. The airport also recently opened a new departure terminal in February increasing passenger throughput from 1,200 to 2,400 passengers per hour. "The very high quality of ideas in the design competition proposed the most modern, convenient solutions that can adapt to the airport's future requirements." Workers and commuters in Milan had an unexpected alarm call on Monday when a 170-tonne sign on top of one of the city's skyscrapers partially collapsed. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang before noticing that one of two L-shaped red signs that sits on top of the 192m Generali Tower, designed by Dame Zaha Hadid, the British-Iraqi architect, had come unstuck and was resting on top of the tower. The steel sign on the insurance company's headquarters is leaning at a precarious 45-degree angle and the 44-storey building, in which 2,000 people work, has been evacuated. The surrounding area has been cordoned off. An initial hypothesis is that the steel rods holding the sign have broken, according to La Repubblica, but the causes are being investigated. Firefighters and maintenance workers are reported to be inspecting the damage. There were no reported injuries.
