Nayara Energy, which is partly owned by the Russian oil company Rosneft, has announced a major investment of Rs. 70,000 crore in India. At the same time, the company has strongly criticized the new sanctions placed on it by the European Union (EU), calling them unfair and harmful to India's interests. These sanctions are part of the EU's 18th round of restrictions against Russia, introduced last week in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The main aim of these sanctions is to reduce the income Russia earns from oil and other exports. Nayara Energy is among the companies that have been targeted in this latest round.
Nayara said that while many European countries continue to import Russian energy through various channels, the EU is punishing an Indian company that only processes Russian oil. Rosneft owns a 49.13 per cent stake in Nayara Energy, which was earlier known as Essar Oil Limited.
In a statement on Monday, the company said it is actively exploring all legal options and that it will counter the EU's decision, which it claims undermines India's sovereignty and disregards global norms. Company runs a major oil refinery in Gujarat
Nayara Energy operates a large oil refinery in Vadinar, Gujarat, with a capacity of 20 million tonnes per year. The company also runs over 6,750 petrol pumps across the country.
A private investment group named Kesani Enterprises owns 49.13 per cent of Nayara. Kesani itself is backed by two Russian firms, United Capital Partners (UCP) and Hara Capital Sarl.
Recently, there have also been reports suggesting that Rosneft may be planning to sell its stake in the refinery and exit the project.

Goa stands to benefit from India-UK free trade agreement: GCCI

Panaji: The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) will significantly benefit Goa's pharmaceutical companies, tourism sector, and feni producers, said the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Saturday. GCCI president Pratima Dhond said that the recent signing of the trade agreement between the two nations could provide a much-needed boost to Goa's economy. The FTA provides zero-duty access to the UK market for nearly 99% of Indian exports, including pharmaceuticals. While the UK imports nearly $30 billion worth of medicines and medical devices, India's pharma exports to the UK currently stand at under $1 billion. The bilateral agreement is anticipated to unlock major export opportunities for the sector. Goa is ranked sixth in pharmaceutical exports, with an overall share of 5.6%. 'This landmark agreement is expected to significantly enhance trade and investment opportunities between India and the UK, with far-reaching benefits for the state,' she said. The FTA could lead to increased travel and tourism opportunities between India and the UK, and this will benefit Goa's tourism industry. Dhond said that Goa's feni industry will gain recognition in the British market with geographical indication protection, opening up new export opportunities. 'This will be a major boost for govt, which is promoting exports of Indian alcoholic beverages to global markets,' she said. Meanwhile, duty-free exports of marine products to the UK, textile businesses, and IT services also stand to benefit from the trade agreement, boosting the state's economy over the long term, said GCCI. The UK imports around $5.4 billion worth of marine products such as prawns, tuna, mackerel, sardines, squid, crab, and pomfret. India's current share in the UK's marine imports is just 2.3%, but this share is projected to double after the FTA. All coastal states stand to benefit from export-led job creation. 'Indian professionals, including those from Goa, will have easier access to the UK market, with relaxed visa procedures and exemptions from UK social security contributions,' said Dhond.

UP gets Rs 12k cr for pucca houses under PMAY-U 2.0

Lucknow: The state govt has secured financial approval of Rs 12,031 crore under PMAY (Urban) Mission 2.0. The funding will help provide pucca houses to the urban poor across Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to adopt strict measures to ensure transparency and quality in construction. To ensure transparency, geo-tagging and photographic documentation of each house will be mandatory under PMAY (Urban). "This will allow real-time monitoring of construction at every stage. All houses will be built with disaster-resilient features to protect against earthquakes, floods, and other calamities, making safety a core part of the scheme," a govt spokesperson said. The central and state govts will share the costs of housing units in 60:40 ratio. Each eligible beneficiary will accordingly receive Rs 2.5 lakh in assistance to help build a permanent (pucca) house. Launched on Sept 1, 2024, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission 2.0 aims to ensure pucca houses for all families. "The scheme is being closely monitored by state and district-level officials to guarantee timely and quality construction," the spokesperson said.
