Cooper Flagg Makes Professional Debut at NBA Summer League vs. Bronny James
Roughly 45 minutes later, he wore the same stone-cold face as he came out for warmups shortly after 5 p.m. at the NBA Summer League.
His fans more than made up for it with plenty of energy, electrifying the jam-packed arena that cheered loudest when he was announced as a starter.
Flagg missed his first two attempts of the game and picked up his first foul just 46 seconds into the game.
Bronny James, also a fan favorite, buried his first attempt over Flagg and followed after Flagg's second miss with a 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 5-0 lead.
Flagg scored his first basket at the 4:30 mark and followed with a mid-range fadeaway as he fell to the floor.
Generally filled with Lakers fans when the team plays in the summer, the arena was full of emotion with a fair share of Mavericks fans in attendance to see the 2025 National college player of the year.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd told The Associated Press before the game he's looking for nothing more than effort and grit in his team's opening game, as he wants them all playing hard.
"This summer league is a little different when you have this type of turnout," Kidd said. "But the guys have had a couple practices. There's going to be some turnovers. I just want to see how they respond to a couple of mistakes being made, no one's gonna play a perfect game and be unselfish."
As for his prize draft pick: "We're all excited," Kidd said of Flagg. "Seen enough of him on tape, so now it's good to see him on the floor."

"Photo-matching company Sports Investors Authentication matched the shoes to 'being worn by Kobe Bryant on January 28, 1997 -- Bryant's first career NBA game as a starter.' Both shoes are signed, and both autographs include letters of authentication from Professional Sports Authenticator's authentication arm, PSA/DNA." That first start for Bryant came during a road game against the Dallas Mavericks, and on that day, he made five of his 11 field-goal attempts and scored 12 points in 32 minutes. Back in February, the sneakers Bryant wore in 2013 when he tore his Achilles went for $660,000 at an auction. In April, a jersey that was photo-matched to the one he wore during his first regular-season game was sold for $7 million.

After the NBA Summer League concluded, the Boston Celtics had a productive outing, finishing with a 4-1 record. The Celtics' third-year guard Jordan Walsh was the team's standout for the Summer League, as his performance this year made him Boston's all-time Summer League scorer. This summer wasn't as productive for the Celtics' lone first-round pick in 2025, Hugo Gonzalez. Gonzalez was Boston's No. 28 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Real Madrid. At just 19 years old, Gonzalez began playing professional basketball overseas at just 16 years old. He was most productive for Real Madrid in Liga ACB, playing in 29 games and averaging 5.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, while shooting 56.5% from the field in 14.2 minutes per game. His first Summer League in the NBA, however, was less impressive, according toThe Athletic's John Hollinger. "The questions about his skill level didn't exactly vanish with his play in Vegas. Gonzalez repeatedly lost his handle, including one notable turnover when he took a single dribble from a standstill and simultaneously had the ball picked and committed a clear path foul. He finished summer league with as many turnovers (13) as baskets and, in addition to shaky perimeter shooting, only shot 6 of 20 inside the arc," Hollinger said in an article. As a taller guard, Gonzales came into the NBA pre-draft process as a player who thrives in pick-and-roll situations, but his shooting ability from behind the three-point line (27.1% for Real Madrid last season) and habits of making passes off of one foot were labeled as problems for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard.

The outlook for the Mavericks next season is fascinating, to say the least. The addition of Russell in free agency has given the team some flexibility on the playmaking front. Last season, the guard notched an average of 12.6 points and 5.1 assists. After being traded from the Purple and Gold, Russell is set to be reunited with his former teammates in Dallas, and the pick-and-roll with him and Davis will be a sight to see for Mavs fans. The development of players such as Max Christie and Maxwell Lewis will also be promising. Although Lewis received limited playing time last season, Christie emerged as a solid rotational player due to his two-way potential. While emerging as a talented wing defender, Christie also showed offensive growth. He averaged 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game on 36.4% shooting from three-point range during his time with the Mavs last season. Apart from the former Lakers' players on the roster, the Mavs also possess incredible talent of their own.
