At WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes well and truly finished the story as he unseated Roman Reigns to become the
WWE
Undisputed Champion. And even if one takes out the emotional and storytelling element from the critically acclaimed match, the in-ring action was top-notch—a fitting ending to Reigns' 1316 title reign as the company's top dog.
One year later, Rhodes could not replicate the same magic at WrestleMania 41. The main event against
John Cena
for the gold disappointed many despite Cena's generational heel turn at Elimination Chamber 2025. However, Rhodes has not promised to rectify the errors made at the biggest show of the year.
Cody Rhodes Doubles Down on Winning the Gold at
SummerSlam 2025
Rhodes recently beat Randy Orton at Night of Champions in Riyadh to become the 2025 King of the Ring winner and will now have the chance to challenge Cena at SummerSlam for the title.
And in a recent appearance on the Busted Open podcast with legendary tag team champion Bully Ray, 'The American Nightmare' said,
'
SummerSlam, I don't wanna go as far as making any promises, but I can tell you the goal with SummerSlam is if people felt a certain way about WrestleMania, I will put that all on my back and take all the credit and responsibility for perhaps not feeling satisfied.
The former WWE Champion added,
'I'd like to get 'em to the finish line with SummerSlam.
Very much looking forward to doing this dance again.'
For the unversed, the Las Vegas main event got a poor reception from fans and critics alike. The match saw a run-in and an assist from Travis Scott, but had one element missing. And his name is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. After all, Johnson was a driving force in pushing Cena and convincing him to turn heel for the first time since 2003.
And his absence from the main event of WrestleMania made the entire storyline go into limbo. Moreover, Rhodes is aware of what the fans want. The WWE universe was not mad about the result. In fact, the majority of them cheered when Cena lifted his 17th World title, but what irked them is the action and booking choices that led to it.
And what better way to rectify this than the biggest party of the summer? And for the first time in history, SummerSlam will be held as a 2-night PLE at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on August 2 & 3.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Lesner walked to the ring without saying a thing, looked Cena in the eye, and left just as quickly as he had come, leaving the WWE Universe and Cena himself wondering what happened out of nowhere. Seemingly after finishing one of the most covered farewell tours in recent memory, John Cena didn't take the moment sitting down and just say goodbye. While they didn't exactly lay hands on each other, it wasn't the friendly rapport that fans had hoped for between two legends. Meanwhile, in a post-show press conference, Cena "responded" to the incident, taking a bit of a shot at Lesnar's habit of returning only when it benefits him and that he may not be simply entertaining the fans with his return this time around. A dozen appearances left before John Cena calls it a career 3x World Heavyweight Championship winner John Cena's retirement from the ring isn't until December 2025, so for now, he is focused on providing a few highlights for the fans watching at home. Many believed SummerSlam 2025 was the final match Cena would ever wrestle, so Lesnar's coming back was also a huge symbolic blow. In a reflective moment during his interview, Cena shared: 'I've been saying the same thing for 25 years. They deal 'em, I play 'em. You know, I'm just really excited. We got like 12 of these things left. I think SummerSlam was an indication from the audience where everybody kind of knows where we're closing our book. After being away since SummerSlam 2023, he surprised everyone by attacking John Cena, just minutes after Cena lost the Undisputed WWE Title to Cody Rhodes. UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen spoke about Lesnar's comeback on Cormier's Mightycast podcast, noting how Lesnar's new long‑haired look and his sheer presence still make him a top star. They said it felt like Lesnar could still lead the WWE show. UFC legend Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen on Brock Lesnar's return Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen began their discussion by recalling Lesnar's entrance at SummerSlam Night Two. Cormier said the show 'delivered' when Lesnar came back. Sonnen agreed and noted that WWE tweaked Lesnar's appearance slightly adding long hair and the crowd loved it. He said: 'They pop for him … they tweaked him a little bit with the hair. I thought it worked.' Daniel Cormier added that Lesnar 'looked tremendous' and still seems like someone who 'could run the WWE.' His tone made it clear: even after two years away, Lesnar's presence feels dominant and very much in control. Brock Lesnar's comeback context and legal background Brock Lesnar had not appeared on WWE since he lost to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam 2023. WWE pulled him from shows, including Royal Rumble 2024, after Brock's name surfaced in the Janel Grant lawsuit against Vince McMahon. Lesnar was mentioned in the amended complaint filed in February 2025. That legal issue had kept him off TV. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The World's Oldest Living Actors. Despite that, WWE legal cleared him for a return weeks before SummerSlam. His comeback was kept secret even WWE staff and media were told nothing. At the end of John Cena vs. CodyRhodes, as the crowd was still cheering, Brock Lesnar's music hit. He stormed the ring and hit Cena with his signature F‑5 finisher. Then he left without speaking.
