'It kind of took off and blew up!' - Inwood's hope for Bolton chance next season
The highly rated 19-year-old remedied a defensive injury crisis to start the final two games against Peterborough United and Stevenage having played less than half an hour of senior football in the Vertu Trophy to that point.
This was already a year when Inwood was selected for Northern Ireland's Under-21s – a departure from his first international steps with the Republic - and having made the breakthrough he is now looking forward to what comes next.
'It kind of took off and blew up in the last few months, really,' he said. 'For the first few months of the season I was in the B team and then maybe towards the end I was trying to get out on loan. For one reason or another that didn't come off.
'Then you are thinking: 'Is this a season where nothing's happened?' And then I got the call-up to the first team and, all of a sudden, you look back and it's been a pretty decent season for me.
'Seeing that I have been given that chance gives me hope for next year.
'I've just got to jobs" target="_blank">work hard in the off-season, work hard and improve pre-season and hope the gaffer selects me for first team again.'
Inwood has been with Wanderers since the age of 15, having been left in limbo after Bury's sad demise in 2019.
Though he was still representing Salford Schools, the defender was not sure if another club would step forward in the middle of the pandemic, a period of great uncertainty in the game.
'I didn't know what to do afterwards, I was a bit stuck to be honest,' he said.

'I'd heard quite a lot of lads had clubs ringing up asking them to come and trial, but I didn't really have anything.'
Inwood trained briefly with Bolton's development group but it was only a few weeks later that Mark Litherland – who had been with him at Bury – offered up a second shot of a scholarship with the Whites.
He worked with Julian Darby in the youth team before another cluster of opportunities presented themselves and he was offered a professional deal with the club.
'It was quite weird,' he added. 'The January before my pro (contract) I went down for a two or three day Republic of Ireland camp in Loughborough and when I came back from that I trained with the first team for the first time.
'I then travelled with the first team, got the pro, went to the B team, and then trained with the first team quite regularly.
'I've been in and out of training since and travelling a few times, so you've just got to take everything individually and work it out.
'You can't think: 'I've been with them so I should be on the bench, or I have been on the bench, so I should be starting.' You can't think that way.
'You have just got to take that each week as it comes. If they need you, if they want you, it's fine. But if they don't and you're involved with the B team you can't get too down about it, you have just got to say: 'Right I've got to perform well for the B team now.'

The Chiefs' defense is already among the best in the league, so it's not impossible that it could be No. 1 in 2025. One big factor will be improving the the pass rush, which was middling in 2024. Rookie defensive linemen Omarr Norman-Lott and Ashton Gillotte could give the defense a jolt of energy in that department. Kansas City's secondary should also be improved with the addition of cornerback Kristian Fulton. Veteran safety Justin Reid left in free agency, but second-year man Jaden Hicks is ready to step up after having a good rookie season. Besides Hicks, the Chiefs are returning every other starter on defense from last year. Bajan batting all-rounder Stuart hit a remarkable 236 not out off 119 balls as Social Circle beat Atherton by 258 runs at home - his second double-century of the summer represented the highest ever individual score in the three-season history of the NWCL. He crashed 19 sixes and as many fours, underpinning a 45-over total of 376-5 to which Atherton could only respond with 118 all out. New-ball seamer Dave Mather impressed for 6-58. The Bolton side's 11th win in 14 games saw them claim the full 12 points on offer and capitalise on a slip-up by Read, who were beaten at Padiham - only their third reverse of the league season. Opener Matthew Hicks top-scored with 62 in Farnworth's 181 all out before striking three times as Tonge were bowled out for 104. Back in the Championship, Walkden dented Barnoldswick's promotion hopes with a five-wicket home win chasing 208. Walkden's fifth win came after captain and new-ball seamer Ammad Afzal claimed five wickets in Barnoldswick's 207 all out before Indian OA Saqlain Haider top-scored in reply with a brisk 69. Barnoldswick are now fifth in the table, 27 points adrift of second-placed Whalley.

Bolton Wanderers boss 'close' to naming new club captain after Thomason exit
STEVEN Schumacher says he is close to naming the next official captain of Bolton Wanderers – but notes that his dressing room has a few excellent candidates. After the departure of previous skipper George Thomason to Wrexham, George Johnston and Eoin Toal have both worn the armband. Schumacher has confirmed that the players will also have a say in establishing a 'leadership group' and that the captaincy could change depending on selection. 'We're close to making the decision but I think I've got a few good leaders in that dressing room,' said the Bolton boss. 'Obviously we lost George Thomason, who had the armband when I got here last year. 'He will obviously need a natural successor, but I have got a few players who could do that job in there. 'I think it's important that the leaders that we pick, the leadership group that the lads will pick between themselves, everybody should be ready to be a captain and lead this team into battle whenever we choose.' Wanderers went through the whole of pre-season without defeat, playing a new 4-2-3-1 system which has been the focal point of the club's recruitment. Schumacher still expects his team to be attack-minded but has worked for several weeks to establish a better shape out of possession in order to address the problems they experienced last season, conceding 70 goals in the league. Reflecting on the changes that fans can expect this time around, he said: 'I don't know how much we have changed the way we play but the system is different. 'We are going to try and go with a back four. We think having wide players in this league, that can take people on, gives you a chance. 'Having four defenders to defend with throughout the game, rather than a back three, gives you the benefit as well. 'So we will see how it goes. We have recruited to do that and it is the way I want to go about things. 'I still don't want to change too much about how this club should be. We want to play attacking football, we want to be on the front foot and be exciting, but I want to concede fewer goals.'
