Journalists, influencers barred from joining tour
A China-based travel agency specializing in tours to North Korea is now accepting bookings for a rare trip to Pyongyang this October, promoting access to the city's international trade fair as the highlight of the itinerary.
North Korea's trade fair in October will be among the first major international events open to outsiders since the country sealed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour is priced at 3,995 euros ($4,700).
Journalists, travel content creators, and social media influencers are barred from joining the tour, according to Young Pioneer Tours, which is headquartered in China.
The travel agency offers a 7-night, 8-day guided trip to Pyongyang from October 24 to November 1. The package also includes a visit to the scenic Mount Myohyang.
'This annual event is one of North Korea's largest and most important international expos, offering a rare window into the country's economic outreach and domestic development across key industries,' the company said on its website.
The Pyongyang fair will have 450 exhibition booths featuring machinery, IT and consumer goods from domestic and international companies, it added.
North Korea briefly resumed foreign tourism earlier this year for the first time since the pandemic, allowing a small group of travelers into the Rason Special Economic Zone in February.
But the program was abruptly halted after a well-known European influencer posted photos and commentary about the trip online.
The influencer, a German national, described scenes of poverty and underdevelopment, including residents in Rason still using ox-drawn carts.

North Korea bars Western influencers from trade fair tour

North Korea has barred Western influencers from joining a delegation of tourists to an international trade fair in October, a China-based tour operator told AFP on Monday. Diplomatically isolated North Korea has welcomed sporadic groups of international visitors in recent months, including hundreds of foreign athletes in April for the first Pyongyang International Marathon in six years. China has historically been the biggest diplomatic, economic and political backer of North Korea, which remains under crippling international sanctions. Travel agency Young Pioneer Tours (YPT) said on Saturday it would take a group of foreign tourists on a trip to the authoritarian state from October 24 to November 1. However, the tour would not be open to journalists, travel content creators or influencers, the company said on its website. YPT co-founder Rowan Beard told AFP the curbs on creators were "a specific request from the North Korean side". "We anticipate that once the country officially reopens, there may be stricter scrutiny or limitations on influencers and YouTubers joining tours," Beard said. The company had "no visibility" on when Pyongyang would restart official media delegations, he said. Several online influencers have shared slickly produced videos from inside North Korea in recent months. Chad O'Carroll, founder of specialist website NK News, said many influencers tend to have larger audiences than professional journalists, but "they are normally working without editors and tend to gain extra views through sensationalist-style content". "North Korean authorities likely see few benefits and major risks with allowing social media influencers to visit the country, given what we saw earlier this year," O'Carroll told AFP. "The result is a community of potential visitors who, in DPRK authorities' minds, are not likely to produce content that is favourable to state interests," he said, using North Korea's official name. The YPT tour, priced at 3,995 euros ($4,704), will depart from the Chinese capital Beijing and take in the Pyongyang Autumn International Trade Fair, North Korea's biggest international business exhibition. Participants will have a "unique chance" to stroll through more than 450 trade booths exhibiting machinery, information technology, energy, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and household items. YPT also said the Pyongyang Chamber of Commerce would "hold a VIP presentation for us for an in-depth overview and insights into the (North Korean) economy". The itinerary also includes major sights in Pyongyang as well as the first Western visit in more than five years to Mount Myohyang, which boasts a museum of lavish gifts presented to former North Korean leaders. Chinese people used to make up the bulk of foreign tourists and business visitors to the isolated nuclear nation before it sealed its borders during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, numbers have not rebounded despite Pyongyang's post-pandemic reopening, a trend that some analysts have attributed to Beijing's anger at North Korea's explicit support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. LG Energy Solution returns to profit in Q2 on strong US demand

LG Energy Solution said Monday that it posted a profit in the second quarter of this year, primarily driven by its stellar performance in electric vehicle and energy storage systems in the North American market. According to the company's preliminary earnings, from April to June, its operating profit skyrocketed 152 percent to 492.2 billion won ($360.5 million), while sales revenue slipped 9.7 percent to 5.56 trillion won from the previous year. This figure marks the first time in six quarters that LG Energy Solution has recorded a profit when not including financial benefits from the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit outlined in the US Inflation Reduction Act. The company posted an AMPC-excluded profit of 1.4 billion won in the second quarter. 'Several key factors have contributed to the increase in profit, including rising demand for highly profitable battery products from North American clients, local ESS production in North America and ongoing cost-saving efforts,' said an industry source familiar with the matter, on condition of anonymity. LG Energy Solution signed an agreement with the US-based Delta Electronics to supply 4 gigawatt-hour battery cells for ESS applications, enough to power 400,000 US households for a day. The company began mass production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch cells at its Michigan plant last month, marking the first instance of a global battery manufacturer starting large-scale LFP battery production for ESS within the US. However, the source noted that sales declined during the same period, partly due to conservative inventory management by European automakers and a drop in production volume in China. This adjustment was a strategic move to minimize exposure to US tariffs on Chinese-manufactured ESS products. As part of its cost-reduction strategies, the battery maker decided to suspend the planned ESS investment in Arizona and instead utilize the Michigan plant earlier in the year. In response to a downturn in the global EV industry, the company also acquired a third joint venture plant with General Motors in Michigan to address the EV battery demand initially intended for LG's Michigan facility. 'We are aware of the increased external volatility from major US policy changes, which makes it challenging to predict market demand,' stated LG Energy Solution in a press release. 'However, we consider the initiation of mass production for new battery chemistry products targeting European EVs and the full-scale ESS production in North America as key opportunities to improve our earnings in the latter half of this year.' Industry insiders suggest that the recent passage of Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' is expected to have a limited impact on Korean battery companies such as LG Energy Solution. This is because the AMPC is set to conclude at the end of 2031, only a year earlier than originally planned. On the other hand, the $7,500 consumer tax credit for new EV purchases under the IRA has been accelerated to this September from the end of 2032.
