Whitecaps need focus in Minnesota MLS match after big CONCACAF Champions Cup win
The Whitecaps enjoyed one of the biggest wins in franchise history Thursday evening, defeating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 2-0 before a record crowd of over 53,000 at BC Place Stadium in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal.
The Whitecaps can advance to the June 1 Champions Cup final with a win over Miami on Wednesday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
But first, Vancouver (6-1-2) must deal with Minnesota (4-1-4) which sits third in the Western Conference, just four points behind the first place Whitecaps.
'It's a good question,' said Vancouver head coach Jesper Sorensen when asked about his team looking past Minnesota. 'We have a unique possibility to reach a final this club has never reached before. That will be on the back of the players' minds.
'But I think we have over the course of this period been good at focusing on the next game. We'll try to do that again.'
Midfielder Ralph Priso said Minnesota has proven its quality by going unbeaten in the last eight games and would like nothing more than to knock off the first-place Whitecaps.
'Minnesota is a good team with good players all around,' Priso said after training Friday. 'They have a lot of speed, they're good in direction combination play.
'We'll have to be ready for runs off the ball, for dynamic plays. We'll just have to be smart when the have the ball not to open ourselves up too much and give them too much space to attack.'
Defender Ranko Veselinovic said the Whitecaps can't let the win over Miami cloud their minds heading into Minnesota.
'We need to be focused,' he said. 'Get our minds together.
'They're a really tough team to break. They don't concede a lot. I expect a really tough game.'
Even Minnesota isn't sure what to expect from the Whitecaps.
'It's difficult for us to read exactly how they'll look this weekend,' head coach Eric Ramsay said this week. 'This is a really quick turnaround.
'They're above us in the table so we can only pay them the utmost respect.'
Minnesota, which is coming off back-to-back 0-0 draws against Toronto and Dallas, won't change its style depending on who the Whitecaps start.
'We're not one of those teams that changes a great deal based upon how the opposition play,' said Ramsay. 'We're pretty good at adapting in the moment and the players are pretty responsive.'
Vancouver heads into the weekend leading all MLS teams with 20 points. The Whitecaps have outscored their opponents 7-1 in their last three games and not given up a goal in three of the last four.
One of the pleasant surprises for the Whitecaps this season has been the play of defender Tate Johnson. The 19-year-old from Tampa, Fla., was selected 15th overall in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft after spending a season at the University of North Carolina.
He has stepped in to start five games this year for Vancouver and scored a goal in his debut against CF Montreal.
Johnson was asked about his composure after looking calm and collected defending Messi in the win over Miami.
'Having such a great group of guys and leaders around really helps me do my job,' he said.
'I'm just trying to control what I can control, working hard every day. When my name is called, I look to put in good performances to help the team win.'
Sorensen has been impressed by Johnson.
'It's a great story,' said the coach. 'He has proven ready for every task we give him. He's never a guy who lets us down.'

‘There's more pressure for them'
Do you believe in miracles? Valour FC better, because that's what it's going to take to escape BC Place Wednesday night with a win over Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Championship. It all comes down to this match — which kicks off at 9 p.m. CT — as the two sides settled for a 2-2 draw when they met in the first leg back in Winnipeg on May 20. 'It would be a miracle, and that's the truth,' admitted Valour head coach and general manager Phillip Dos Santos on Monday. 'But we've seen it. It's football, it's pro sports. These things could happen.' In their first meeting, Vancouver fielded a starting 11 of mostly backups, but with this showdown taking place in their own building, they're expected to roll with a roster that closer resemblances the one that has them in second place in the MLS Western Conference standings at 11-4-5. The Canadian Championship features pro and semi-pro teams across the country battling for the Voyageurs Cup and the right to represent the nation at the CONCACAF Champions Cup. 'It's the Cup, anything is possible, and for me, that's what I believe. That's always kind of the mentality in England is anything can happen in Cup (tournaments),' said Valour midfielder Kian Williams, who hails from Leicester. 'I feel like there's no pressure. There's more pressure for them… I'm just looking forward to it, to be honest.' The last time Valour hit the road to play the Whitecaps was in the preliminary round of the 2022 Canadian Championship where they fell 2-0. In last year's Canadian Championship, Forge FC made the CPL proud by knocking out MLS' CF Montreal in the quarters. 'It's gonna take a lot, and I think we know that. I know for me, I'm willing to give everything and for sure all the boys are,' said Williams. 'As soon as you go to a team like the Whitecaps, you know it's going to be a tough game. You've got to be switched on for the full 90 minutes and you've got to give everything you can… I think you just go in there and just execute everything we've worked hard on this week, and I believe we can do that.' While the Whitecaps are dominating the MLS, Valour is crumbling in the Canadian Premier League. Winnipeg's professional soccer club has lost three straight and has been outscored 11-1 during that stretch. Their most recent defeat was a 3-1 loss on Canada Day against the HFX Wanderers. Valour has eight points in 12 league tilts, which has them in seventh place in the eight-team circuit with a 2-8-2 record. 'We need to find a way to turn things around. For me, the first thing is the guys can't quit. It's going to be about the mentality of the guys, the locker room, and that in challenges we stay together,' said Dos Santos. 'And you know, what a game. What a game when you think about it… If you would've asked me (if) this could be the game that turns the season around, or which game you want to play to turn a season around, I would tell you that this is the best one.' 'Yes, football wise, there were challenges. There were a lot of struggles with the early days of the foundation that they built today. But at the end of the day, you were part of an organization that is now, how can I say, collecting the fruits of hard work and the struggles that they had to go through,' said Dos Santos. 'I keep an eye on them and have a lot of friends there still… There's a lot of people in that organization that I still care for and that I still love so, yeah, it's always good to get to play them.' All criminal trials in 4 B.C. courts to be rescheduled during FIFA World Cup
The chief justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court says all criminal trials that were to take place in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and New Westminster during the FIFA World Cup next year will have to be rescheduled. Chief Justice Ron Skolrood says in a notice posted Monday that the tournament is expected to have "very significant impacts" on court operations at the affected Supreme Court locations. The notice says neither jury nor judge-only criminal trials will take place at the four locations from June 12 to July 8, 2026, and that no civil jury trials will take place either. It says the number of non-jury civil trials may also have to be reduced in the lead-up to the tournament. The notice cites the draw on police resources around the Lower Mainland, heavy traffic that will make it difficult for sheriffs to transport suspects, and a potential lack of hotel rooms for jurors and out-of-town witnesses. Skolrood says the court is committed to having enough capacity for "urgent matters," but the service reductions during the tournament are "unavoidable." "The full extent of the impacts is uncertain and will remain so for some time," the notice says.

Telus Canadian Championship to go down to four teams this week after lengthy layoff
The Telus Canadian Championship quarterfinals resume this week, some seven weeks after three of the four ties kicked off. A lot has happened in the interim. First up, it's Vancouver FC at Cavalry FC (the teams are tied 1-1) and Atletico Ottawa at York United (Ottawa leads 2-1) on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it's Forge FC at CF Montreal (Forge leads 1-0) and Valour FC at the defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps (tied 2-2). The away goals rule in not in effect and the teams will go straight to a penalty shootout if the aggregate is tied after the second leg. A new draw will be held to decide the semifinal pairings. The Cavalry-Vancouver FC match features two sides in vastly different form. After a slow start, Cavalry (6-3-3) has risen to fourth in the eight-team Canadian Premier League while Vancouver is last at 1-8-4. Vancouver coach Afshin Ghotbi sees beyond the standings, however. 'I think if you look at the table and the league, we're probably the best last-place team in the history of the league,' he said. 'Because the performances have been quite good and we've been able to control many of the games we're playing and create a lot of chances, especially the last two games. 'Unfortunately the results have not come, due to our inefficiency in front of the goal and sometimes some individual defensive lapses.' Visiting Vancouver outshot Forge 15-9 (5-3 in shots on target) in a 2-1 loss Saturday. And it had a 25-9 edge (10-3 in shots on target) in the 4-4 draw at Pacific FC that preceded it. Prior to a 2-0 home loss to league-leading Atletico Ottawa last time out on June 28, Cavalry had enjoyed an eight game unbeaten streak (6-0-2) that followed a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on April 26. Cavalry outscored its opposition 18-4 during the unbeaten run. In contrast, Vancouver has gone 0-6-2 since its lone league win of the season — a 3-1 decision at Valour FC on May 3. Vancouver can take encouragement from the May 21 first leg and an earlier league meeting April 18 in Calgary. Both games ended 1-1 with Cavalry needing goals in the 84th minute and 95th minute from star striker Toby Warschewski to pull even. 'I know it always comes up about they've not beaten us but we never underestimate what they have,' said Cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. 'I think they're a well-coached side … We know that they pose some threats. They're very very aggressive. They do skirt that line but they also have some good set plays.' Stopping Warschewski will be a focal point for Vancouver. The big German has five goals in seven career games against Vancouver. 'He's scored important goals against us in late stages of the game and part of that is he's just relentless in his effort,' said Ghotbi. 'He's constantly coming into dangerous areas, with and without the ball, and then when he gets in those situations he's shooting with enormous precision and great shooting attitude.' Vancouver is missing 17-year-old midfielder Emrick Fotsing, who was taken off the field in an ambulance on the weekend after being knocked out in an aerial challenge with Forge defender Dan Nimick. 'The good news is scans came back negative,' said Ghotbi. 'He's cleared to come back with us.' Nevertheless, Vancouver is giving the teenager time to recover, sending him home to spend the week with his parents while awaiting clearance of concussion protocols. Cavalry will be without injured midfielder Michael Baldisimo and French defender Bradley Kamdem. Vancouver advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Pacific FC in a penalty shootout. Cavalry blanked League1 Alberta champion Edmonton Scottish 6-0. Vancouver and Calgary meet again Sunday in league play in Langley, B.C. Atletico Ottawa at York United Holding a one-goal lead going into the second leg, Atletico Ottawa has high hopes for the cup competition, 'When the season started, we thought that with the roster we have this year we would have the opportunity to fight for everything,' said Mexican coach Diego Mejia. 'I know our history and I know that if we win (Tuesday) we will play the semifinal for the first time in this organization. 'It's a very very important match for us, the most important match of the year up until now. All the players know that and if we want to grow as a team, I think we need to start winning that kind of match.' Ottawa (8-1-4) leads the CPL, four places and 13 points ahead of York (4-6-3). Ottawa started the season on a seven-game unbeaten run (5-0-2) and is unbeaten in its last five league outing (3-0-2), including a scoreless draw June 22 at York Lions Stadium, since a 2-0 loss May 24 at Halifax.
