City manager condemns attacks on metro staff
The most recent attack came on June 13, when municipal employees stationed at the Block X Library in Jukulyn, Soshanguve, were held at gunpoint along with on-site security personnel.
The criminals made off with their personal belongings, including mobile phones and money.
In an earlier attack on June 6, a municipal crane truck operated by the Parks Section was hijacked in Ga-Rankuwa.
The truck, a Nissan UD long base, was forcefully taken by unknown assailants, leaving the driver and crew abandoned in a remote field.
The crew received assistance and has opened a case with the police.
Mettler described the acts as deplorable and a direct threat to service delivery, and undermines the morale of staff, which jeopardises public assets critical for day-to-day municipal functions.
'These shared physical resources are vital to public service and must be protected as common assets for the benefit of all. I condemn the attacks directed at the city's personnel and vow that those responsible will be hunted down and brought to book,' Mettler said.
The staff involved in these attacks have had to undergo trauma counselling as a safety precaution and to support staff recovery.
The Block X Library in Jukulyn, Soshanguve, has been temporarily closed.
The theft of the crane truck is said to have dealt a significant blow to service delivery efforts, as the vehicle is essential in maintaining parks and infrastructure across the metro.
Residents are asked to come forward and report any information they may have to the metro or their local authorities.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the attacks indicate a worrying trend, though the metro remains steadfast in its mandate to deliver services.
'This incident highlights a worrying trend of public service tools being targeted, further straining municipal capacity to efficiently serve residents. The safety of employees and the preservation of city assets remain the city's priorities,' he said.
'The city's leadership urges communities to take an active role in protecting municipal property by reporting suspicious behaviour and/or criminal activities against the city's infrastructure.
'The city remains committed to enhancing security and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery. The city appeals to the public for continued vigilance and co-operation. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is encouraged to come forward and assist law enforcement agencies in bringing those responsible to justice,' he said.

Cullinan and Ekangala crime blitz leads to mass arrests, fines
Over 350 suspects were arrested for various crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape and armed robbery during crime combating efforts. Led by Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, the operation focused on tackling crime in the rural communities of Ekangala and Cullinan policing precincts on July 31. 'SAPS in Tshwane intensified its ongoing efforts to combat crime through the continued implementation of Operation Shanela,' he said. He said SAPS personnel from across the metro were deployed to enhance policing efforts. 'Key activities included continued liquor compliance inspections, the tracing of wanted suspects, and heightened patrols in identified crime hotspots,' he said. He said district detectives made significant progress in their tracing operations, resulting in the arrest of 318 wanted suspects. 'The arrested suspects include seven for murder, three for attempted murder, four for armed robbery and 10 for rape,' he said. He added that a roadblock was assembled in Ekangala, with tactical teams deployed in both precincts to increase police visibility. He stated that, 'This operation led to the detention of 30 illegal immigrants, who are currently being processed for court proceedings and possible deportation.' He said two individuals were fined for employing illegal immigrants. Van Dyk said during the operation, 1 265 individuals and 509 vehicles were searched, with 35 vehicles being tested to verify ownership. 'The operations resulted in the arrest of a total of 360 suspects for a range of criminal offences,' he said. Furthermore, he said patrols were conducted in 20 high-crime areas and premises with two second-hand dealers being inspected and fined for contravention of the Second-Hand Goods Act. 'Traffic officers provided valuable support by issuing 102 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R39 000 for various traffic-related offences.' He then said that, as part of liquor law enforcement, 10 liquor outlets were inspected, with five outlets that were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act. 'Alcohol, three speakers and a fridge were confiscated,' he said. Police investigate murder after body found in Eersterust
The discovery of a dead body in Eersterust has prompted an investigation. According to police spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, community members discovered the body on Thursday, July 31. 'In the afternoon, community members discovered a body in an open field along Swartberg Street in Eersterust,' he said. 'Police were immediately alerted, and upon arrival, discovered the partially buried body of a female, with one hand visible above ground. 'Specialised units from the South African Police Service, including Crime Scene Management and Search and Rescue units were activated, and deployed to the scene to assist with the investigation.' Van Dyk said preliminary findings indicated that the deceased was a 30-year-old woman who was reported missing in Sunnyside on July 4. 'A case of murder has been opened, and investigations are ongoing,' he said. He added that the police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the investigation. Man denied bail in five-year-old murder case
The case of three men accused in an incident that left a five-year-old dead in Soshanguve has been postponed to September 10 for a formal charge. This follows the killing of Ditebogo Phalane, who was shot in front of his dad in a hijacking in the driveway of their home on May 10, 2024. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said, 'The matter was postponed to September 10 for indictment'. This, after one of the accused was denied bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on July 30. 'The Pretoria North Magistrate's Court denied bail to Elia Moeko (36),' she said. 'Moeko, along with his co-accused Ali Sithole (30) and Nido Gumbe (29), faces charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition.' She added that Gumbe, a Mozambican, faces an extra charge of being in the country illegally. Mahanjana said, 'The trio allegedly shot and killed Ditebogo during an armed robbery targeting his father, Tebogo Phalane, in the course of a hijacking.' WATCH: According to her, an intensive investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation led to the suspects' arrest on May 23, 2024. 'The suspects were arrested while in custody at the Pretoria Moot Police Station on unrelated charges,' she said. She added that while Sithole and Gumbe had previously abandoned their bail applications, Moeko submitted a bail affidavit. Moeko claimed he needed to care for his two minor children and his late brother's child. LISTEN: 'He further stated that his continued incarceration would result in a loss of income, as he operates a hair salon and offers school transport services,' said Mahanjana. She added that prosecutor Advocate Tumelo Letaoana opposed the application and led evidence from the investigating officer. 'Sergeant Mashudu Savhasa testified that Moeko posed a flight risk, had misled the court by not disclosing previous convictions, and could endanger witnesses known to him,' she said. Magistrate Maseena Khan ruled that the accused failed to prove the existence of exceptional circumstances that would justify his release on bail. 'As a result, bail was denied,' she said.
