Gatineau, Que. man fined $6,200 after being observed going 200 km/h on Hwy. 50
An 18-year-old Gatineau, Que. man is facing $6,200 in fines and may face charges after being observed driving over 200 km/h on a highway in western Quebec over the weekend.
The Sûreté du Québec says at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday, officers spotted a vehicle travelling at excessive speeds on Hwy. 50 at the Georges exit. Police say the driver was going 158 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
'As the officer's vehicle merged with traffic to intercept the vehicle, the vehicle made several zigzag passes and was travelling at over 200 km/h,' police said in a media release Monday morning.
'The officer lost sight of the vehicle but continued on to locate it.'
The officer provided information to Gatineau police and officers with MRC Papineau.
'A few minutes later, police were notified that a similar vehicle had collided with a guardrail on Chemin Lépine,' police said. 'At the scene, the officer confirmed that it was indeed the same vehicle.'
Police say the driver could face charges of dangerous driving and fleeing.
'He also received tickets totalling $6,276 and 22 demerit points for speeding, driving a vehicle at a speed likely to endanger the safety of others, driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop his vehicle immediately when required to do so by a peace officer in the course of his duties.:
The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Hamilton police lay second-degree murder after man found dead behind abandoned house

In a news release issued Monday, police said they were called to the property at 1452 Upper James Street, south of the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway, for a report of a deceased person. The property, which police said was abandoned, had a large field behind it and a 'number of people' were living in and around the vicinity. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of Adam Parrish, located outside under a piece of plywood. After the autopsy was completed, police determined that Parrish did not die of natural causes and 39-year-old Hamilton resident Brent LeFrancois was charged as a result. Police did not reveal Parrish's cause of death. 'Hamilton Police continue to extend its deepest condolences to Adam's family during this incredibly difficult time,' police said. It's unclear if Parrish and LeFrancois knew each other or if either party was living on the property.

Child dead after being hit by vehicle in Surrey, B.C.: police
A young child is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Surrey, B.C., Sunday evening. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says officers responded to the pedestrian crash at 64th Avenue and 138 Street, located in the Newton neighborhood, around 8:17 p.m. Sunday. A Monday news release says paramedics tried to save the child, but they died. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating, according to police. They say the cause of the crash is under investigation. Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the SPS at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2025-58317 (SP).

Calgary Stampede attendance falls short of record
Overcrowding concerns, stabbings and an animal death among the challenges at this year's Stampede. Jordan Kanygin reports. The Calgary Stampede's all-time attendance record, set in 2024, still stands. According to data from officials on Monday, 121,704 people visited Stampede Park on Sunday, bringing the total attendance number for 2025 to 1,470,288. That's 7,665 fewer than last year. The 2025 edition of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth was marred by concerns over public safety and overcrowding after a violent altercation following a live performance on the Coke Stage. Three people were stabbed in the attack on July 9 and police are still looking for suspects. On Sunday, Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley addressed the issue, saying that his team will better evaluate what acts will perform at the venue. 'We know these high demand artists, those that draw a younger crowd, tend to be a little ruly than, say, a classic rock band that goes there, so all those things will be evaluated.'
